Non-Injury AFF3 premature brake release
superwoman8433 replied to SkyHigh04's topic in Safety and Training
We do give a shit, but you have to realize most people were jumping yesterday when you posted. From the sounds of it, it sounds like you had one brake unstowed or it came unstowed during opening. I haven't had this happen to me but I have plenty of friends it has happened too and more then half have had to cutaway because they were on smaller canopies and the force was to much. Did you learn anything from the jump?? I know as a student, you are in overload mode (our at least I was). but if you can get something out of the jump, then its 10x better. Maybe what you learned is to unstow both brakes before cutting away?? -
Harry, I have had many interactions with lord slaton and I don't think your getting everyone's point. The fact is he is basically saying "fuck you" to all the pros that went through cpc and earned their way to the pst. NOW, he is making a mockery, IMO, of everthing. As Mike posted already, he spent thousands to compete to now learn that if he waited a year then he wouldn't have had to do that. The CPC and PST are not jim's babies. Yes, he was a part of starting and continuing the pro comp. circuit. But Chris and Justin were the ones who started CPC. Jim and LYLE started PST. jim was the one who tied CPC & PST together. Before you make a statement, I would make sure my facts are straight. People are bitching because they feel cheated. My boyfriend use to compete in the PST and I can tell you that I feel cheated and I don't even compete! I know how much money we have spent flying to comp., paying the entry fees, boarding, etc. and I can't believe he would do something like this to the pros who have followed all of his rules and busted their butts to become pros. As to organizing and spending your own money on comp. etc. Yes, I have low jump numbers but I have helped my boyfriend setting up canopy courses, ground launching camps, etc. and I can tell you one thing, it is a lot of work and money. But if you can get someone else to foot the bill (like in jim's case, do you really think jim bought all that crap for team x, with his money?? Hell No he got investors) No one is taking away what lord slaton has done for swooping. THESE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND VIEWS ON THIS, NOT KEVIN'S!!!!!!!!

I am coming this weekend....thought I would warn you!!! Kevin and I will both be there! Tiff

Its still unreal to us that you are gone. It seems like just yesterday we were playing with the devil. Your friendship and passion meant a lot to me. blue skies, I know your giving someone a piece of your mind somewhere!! Miss you!!!!!!!

That is awesome that you had a better time....it will only get better with each jump. I was scared shitless and I did 11 tandems before I went through AFF and I still got so nervous during AFF I got sick. BUT it is TOTALLY WORTH EVERY SECOND! Jumping is my passion now. The best thing to do in skydiving is take things slow and easy. Kuddos on the jump!!

This is the biggest load of BULLSHIT I have ever read!! I agree with everyone before me....Why the hell should I, as a taxpayer who didn't buy a house because I knew I couldn't afford it, bail out dumbasses that bought when they couldn't??? Nothing pisses me off more then taxpayers having to bail these dumbasses out!!!

I jump a Sabre2 150 and downsized from a 170 and I have gotten slammed on the 170 but not the 150. I think you nailed it on the head. The roll is not as important as keeping the slider against the gromets, quartering the slider, and tight line strech. It sounds like when the you lost control of the roll, it moved the slider. Also, I may be wrong someone correct me, Don't the larger Sabre2 (170 up) have less consistent openings then the smaller (150 down) As I said before, I have been slammed on a 190 and a 170 but not a 150. But I LOVE my sabre2 and wouldn't trade it for anything but maybe a Katana when I am ready. PD all the way baby!! Hope this helped.

Shut your mouth when your talking to me!!!!

Well I guess I have to come and demand an apology in person....you know I am going to demand a little more than an apology. I haven't been the same since your comment If I come get it in person then you owe me a jump, since I never got one last time because of some crazy biooootch

When your not strong enough to access the full flare and chow, to me that is a good reason to downsize. I jumped that canopy until I proved it wasn't my skill that was holding me back, it was the canopy. (around 70 jumps at least) YES you can be like my boyfriend and tell me to get stronger but between work and jumping I have ZERO time to lift weights etc. to get stronger. I respect what you are saying but you should look at it by a case by case basis. What good is a bigger canopy if I can't flare it all the way and then pound in? Thank you for your input though it is valuable.

The reason the 176 reserve was to big for me was that I had trouble landing it on 2 feet, same as my 170 main. I was loading it at .7 to 1. So, if there were winds I had trouble landing. Since I have downsized to the 150 and 143 (I test jumped the optimum) I have stood up every landing and I don't get pushed around by turbulance as much anymore. Yes, you will probably say why was I at a .7 wingloading until jump 70...I am very conservative when it comes to downsizing. I have a .9 wingloading now with 289 jumps. I think that everyone should stay on a large canopy until they KNOW that they can handle downsizing. Because when you downsize, you are also cutting time out if you have a mal.

IAN DRENNAN----I demand an apology. How can you dare say nothing good comes out of Texas??? That's where I was BORN AND RAISED!!! Until you apologize, I am not coming to see you I think Annie would be real upset if we didn't come for the farm wedding Although, I did get the hell out of there as soon as I graduated.

Want to skydive, having trouble finding DZ
superwoman8433 replied to B1029384756's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
As someone already posted, Skydance in Davis, CA has trained someone close to your size. I think Big Mike is 250-260. He is a rockstar now! I am pretty sure that he jumped the 280 during AFF, which put him at a 1:1 wingloading. Most students wingloading is .9 or lower. When I started jumping, my wingloading was .7 -
My heart goes out to her. I think you should post her story in the incident forum. You will get way more people reading her story then in this thread. I would just copy and paste what is on her website. Just a thought.

Read her story, it can be very helpful. She was jumping at Skydive Hawaii. But she jumped at Perris. She has something around 60 or so jumps, if I remember right. From her story it seems like the wind pushed her into the mountain. I learned in Hawaii and first thing I can tell you is the winds out there are high. Most of the time they are over at least 10+. Hawaii is different then other DZ's in the since that where it is situated isn't the best place for newbies. Next to the landing area, which is at the end of the runway, to the right is a mountain and to the left is water. If they are south winds they come over that mountain and cause major major turbulence. The winds out there will take you for a ride if your not counteracting it. I will say this, one thing Kelly said in her story was that she thought she would be fine on her second jump because everyone else was going....I know some of the guys out there and most of them are extremely experienced and have been jumping in Hawaii for a long time. For example, Papa Dopp, a TI at Skydive Hawaii has close to, if not more then 10,000 tandems. Jake, who is also a TI at Skydive Hawaii has several thousand jumps. Hawaii is known for producing some awesome canopy pilots because of the conditions. TURTLETOP---I would post Kelly's story on the incidents forum. You will get way more people to read her story.

I know I have already said it in a past post somewhere but I am going to say it again...YOU ROCK!!! Everything that you have done to get to where you are is awesome! It makes me realize how easy it was (took me 13 jumps to graduate) for me. Even though for my first 20 or so jumps I got sick. Anyways, I just wanted to say kuddos and again if your ever in Deland, you better come jump with me!!!!!

RE: Rapid Downsizing - Why do it?
superwoman8433 replied to Chris-Ottawa's topic in Safety and Training
I agree 110%. The only time I hardly ever see someone talking to someone about their canopy size is when they have caused or come close to causing an accident. Especially if you don't jump at that DZ often. Most of the time people do exactly what Billvon said "stand by the fence" and wait. Shit, at my home DZ, they have Biff Bingo. They bet on who is going to mess up there landing the most. I know of other DZ's that have bounce bingo. -
I did make a mistake and forgot that I did just downsized my reserve. I downsized my reserve because a 176 is to big for me. But my boyfriend, the expert, made me stay on that 176 for a while when I downsized to the 150. Now that I am TOTALLY comfortable with the 150, he said it is better to have a 143 because of size and volume. It is better in size because it compares to what I am comfortable flying now. He made a great point to say that, say I still had the 176 and I was flying my 150 and shit happens..... all of a sudden I have 2 canopies out. I would be in better shape if they are relatively the same size. Think about it...What do you think would happen if you went into a downplane with a 176 and a 150? But this is worse, worse case scenio. Generally people will keep their reserve size as close to their main. Since PD doesn't make a 150, I have the 143. But as someone stated the 143 reserve ranges in size by a few square feet. Also, you will find that a 120 by PD is not the same size as a 120 Tempo. From what I understand, correct me if I am wrong everyone, PD reserves pack bigger than competitors reserves that is because PD measures differently then Tempo (sorry I don't know who makes Tempos) a PD 113 packs similar to a 120 Tempo. BUT, when I downsize to 135 and 120, I will stay on my 143 optimum because it packs like a 126.
-
Sorry, I went from a 176 to an optimium 143
-
Where did I EVER say my reserve was smaller than my main? I have downsized 2 times. First from a 190 to a 170 and second from a 170 to a 150. Both times downsizing from a Sabre2. I have always had a 176 reserve. Where did this question come from??? Edited to add: Why would I downsize on my reserve and not my main??????
-
I am no expert but I live with one who didn't let me downsize until my canopy was holding me back. IMO, for what it is worth, I have always followed the advice of my boyfriend who has had TOO MANY friends go in, in the last 19 years. YOU SHOULD NEVER DOWNSIZE, Until the current canopy your on is holding you back. With that said, it sounded like you needed to downsize, but not planforms also. One thing I have learned about downsizing and changing planforms is that size and shape has EVERYTHING to do with response time. Things happen a hell of a lot quicker on a 129 then they would on 210. Are you fully prepared for that? You still haven't answered the question on what you would do if someone cuts you off on final or you are forced to make a low turn to avoid another canopy........ Going on with what Lisa said (skybytch), Jim is a perfect example...He had every intent to fly conservatively but he encountered one small thing and reacted and now has gone through several surguries etc. Your asking advice on how to safely downsize and everyone before me has said it.......Take a smaller step for your sake and the sake of your fellow jumpers in the air Edited to change platform to planform, I get excited and start typing to fast, I guess, thanks pilot

Bill Dause is under the chopping block!!
superwoman8433 replied to ts1962's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Bill NEVER cuts when he is flying and everyone who jumps at Lodi knows that....even the people who don't jump there know that Bill doesn't cut for hop n pops. How do you think he can charge next to nothing?? No, I don't think Bill would have done it any differently, except maybe not let this IDIOT jump. PHIL----I agree 110%! Glad someone said it, miss you lots!!!! -
When is this???
