Xaos 27 90 square feet & Jevelin RS
Skydive2 replied to freeflydrew's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I put a Velocity 90 in my RS (actually its the older XRS, but the same size). Its tight but, fits ok. But the -27 celled canopy will pack even bigger, so it will probility be super tight. I put my Velocity 90 in a friends RS.1, and it fit like a glove. Lance -
Student Rigs...how long do people normally use them?
Skydive2 replied to andy2's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That is a very good deal your school is giving you on gear rental and you should take full advantage of it. Personally, I would get some jumps on the student gear, get conformable with landing them, then talk to more experienced jumpers (or your instructors are your best bet) and begin to think about new gear. The more jumps you get, the more you will realize what you like and don't like about certain features on rigs. The more experience you have, the better your equipment choice will be (for what you want, not what everyone else is jumping). Personally, I put over 100 jumps on student gear (PD 230's and 260's), then bought my first rig (a Javelin J1 and Sabre 150) which I put over 800 jumps on (with different mains). By the time I was ready to buy I had 100 jumps, and a very good idea of what I wanted, and needed. This really helped when I was selecting my new rig. Just my .02 Lance -
I agree, its pretty stupid if you ask me, but no one really has yet Lance Rig For Sale!!!

I remenber that article, it was written by Kevin Gibson a few years ago. If I were you, I'd give USPA a call (Kevin works there) and see what they can do for you (1-800-371-USPA). Or, e-mail kevin directly, and maybe he can help. I'll PM you his e-mail address. Blue skies Lance

How Many Crossbraced Canopies at your DZ?
Skydive2 replied to Skydive2's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Just wondering how many crossbraced canopies are at the average DZ. At mine (a King Air/Cessna DZ), there are only 3 of us flying crossbraced (a lot of swoopers, but mostly flying stiletto's, and crossfire's) Blue skies Lance -
Poll for CROSS BRACED PILOTS...which canopy is better?
Skydive2 replied to listo's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I've had the opportunity to jump both a Xaos-21 95(10 jumps), and Velocity 90 (which I liked so much I bought). To compare, the velocity has slightly higher front and rear riser pressure. Both the Xaos and Velocity I jumped, had nice slow openings. during opening the velocity tends to get 2 middle cells open, then "hunt" around until inflated, as to where the Xaos openings were more predictable (I compare them to a Crossfire opening). All around I would say the Xaos is a better opening canopy. As far as flight characteristics, the velocity is more "ground hungry" than the Xaos. The Xaos didn't seem to have as much "bottom end" as the Velocity does, but that may just be me. With either canopy, you really can't go wrong. I mostly chose the velocity simply because it was made by PD, and I have great faith in there products. -
Actually Yellow Bird is a 1958 Cessna 182 All "Stright Tail" Cessna 182's were built between 1956-1959, so if you've jumed one of them, you've jumped a plane at least 44 years old. Blue Skies Lance

I've heard from a few people that there is a new DZ coming to delaware this summer (around the dover area). Anyone have any details? Blue skies Lance

I hear a rumor today that mullins King air landed with the gear up at Coolidge. Any one know if its true? Details?

Seems like a Velocity might be right for you. I've only got a few jumps on an Xaos, but the openings on my velocity 90 are very comparable to the openings I got on a Xaos 95 (nice, slow, and soft, what more could you ask for! ;) The velocity is more ground hungry than the Xaos, but with rear risers, I have no problem making it back from a long spot. I found front riser pressure to be about the same on both canopies (maybe a little more on the velocity).\ I'd recommend demoing both of the models, both companies have excellent demo programs. my .02 cents Lance

Hi, I currently jump a Velocity 90 loaded at 2.1. Everyone says how the velocity is much more "ground hungry" than an equally loaded VX or Xaos. I've never had a chance to jump a VX, and only have about 6 on a Xaos 21 (before ever jumping a velocity, so I had nothing to compare it to). I was just wondering how much more ground hungry the velocity is compared to the other X-braced canopies on the market (at equal wingloadings)? Thanks Lance

Old Jump Planes Just Sitting Around?
Skydive2 replied to Skydive2's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Do you have any old Jump Planes just sitting around at your dz, never flying, just rusting away? There seems to be tons of them like that. -
To be alittle more clear, the blacking of the line starts about one foot up from the connector links, on down. My friend said this is where the slider tends to come down really fast. Is that pretty normal? Lance

Hi, I'm not real familar with Vectran Line, and how it wears. I noticed on a friend of mine's velocity (that only has 200 jumps) that in places, the line was basically black from wear. Is this normal? Once the lines are black, are they still good for a while? Thanks in advance Lance

Where to get Leather Hackey Handles
Skydive2 replied to Skydive2's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
HI, I need to order like 12 Leather Hackey Handles, and I was wondering where the best place to get them would be? Thanks in advance Lance -
I've been looking for what seems like ever (!) for a used Velocity 90 or 84, and I just can't seem to find one. Anyway, I have the opportunity to trade one of my stiletto's for an FX that would be loaded around 1.8. I've never jumped an FX, but I've jumped a Velocity 96 and 90 and a VX 120 which all opened great! How does the FX compare? I've always heard they open hard, any truth to that? Thanks Lance

>>Or I can figure out something else to spend the next six months looking for.>> Seems to me you waisted your time, theres like 5 on ebay.com right now, just type in "twin otter" in the search. Lance

I was just wondering whats happing in Jean, NV. I heard there is a new DZ there. Did the Gravity Zone Close, or did the new place open up next to them?? Do either of them land at the airport??

I'm very sorry to hear this. Get well soon Martin. Does anyone know what size/type of canopy he was jumping? Lance

I'm getting ready to buy a new (or used if I can find one) velocity, and I'm getting alot of mixed info about wingloadings. I've jumped a 96 loaded at 1.9:8. I'm debating between a 90 and 84. I'd be loading the 90 @ 2.1:2 and the 84 @ 2.2:7. Most people are telling me that the ideal wingloading on velocity's is 2.1, but still others are saying that 2.2 is the way to go. Does anyone have opinions? I think I'm going to stick the the 90, but I don't want to spend $2200 and not be totally satisfied. Thanks in advance Lance

I've got a few jumps on a Spectre 170 loaded at 1.2. I was kind of suprised that the swoop I got out of it on a no wind day. Not near as far as the Sabre 150 that I was jumping at the time...but not bad. just my .02 cents Lance

Who's all going to the Ranch for the PSN's this year?? Anyone know of any good places to stay at the DZ?

Does anyone have any details on what the serious injury and death @ X-Keys and Atlanta last weekend? I heard they all occurred on landing any one have any other details? Thanks

Were very seriously considering putting in a swoop pond at my DZ, and I have few questions about how other swoop ponds are built. First, right now were planning on making it around 200 feet long (give or take) and 20, 30, or 40 feet wide (we haven't decided), 3 feet in the deepest part, tapering at the sides and end's. Here's the debate, to save $$ we'd like to just have a liner, and have a tanker fill up the pond when its done, and fill it up with a hose to keep the water up (the skydive city and Lodi approach I THINK). Does anyone think we should shell out the additional money (probability close to $1,000 extra) and dig a well, and put in a pump?? Also, does it sound like a good size? Just trying to get as much input as possible before we shell out the big $$$ Thanks in advance Lance http://www.parachutesarefun.com
