  1. Hi Jerry, I believe our weather was made for sky diving. Very seldom did we get washed out for the entire weekend. I was like you, when I got to 175 after 2 years, I decided that I needed to get going and make a few more jumps every weekend as I had a wife, 3 children and a meat packing business to take care of during the week.(She's still with me after 48 1/2 years) I trained Bobby Frierson in '64 and encouraged him to get his D in a year(911). So, I guess you can say we were blessed to have such good weather. Talking bout Ottley, he use to come down and jump with some of his buddies that were going to USC in Columbia. We would take him to Fairfax where we were getting tach time rates(Hop and pops for$1 and 7500 for $2.50). He never got over that and wanted to be a member of our Paracuhte Team (Vikings, we were from Denmark,S.C.) Everybody had a nickname so we named him Team Fossil...
  2. I find this very interesting as in the 'old days' the jumpers I knew were eager to get their ratings when they earned them although i never got my Free Fall Numbers, I did get the wings. Gold wings #66(42d civilian) Dec. 66 Diamond Wings # 13 Sept 69 D Diamond Wings # 5 Dec. 71 Made my first sport jump in Feb 62.
  3. Carl C-700 past away Sunday,Sept. 30th laying in his hammock. He and Hal Baxter D-284 had a parachute Center in Orangeburg,S.C. in '62. Carl was 67, a very talented artist and he worked on my movie sets.
  4. Howard, I remeber when Istel was at Ft. Bragg in '57 teaching freefall manuvers. Where did he get his knowledge? Also pointing as he called it and spoting as we called it was a critical skill before the squares came out..Woody
  5. Yeah, he talked so slow it would take him all night to tell his story. He's been gone 2 years on 9/11 and I sure midd him..
  6. Yeah, looks like Bobby Frierson and myself on our first Delta11 jump. His opened but mine didn't. Had to cut away but nobody was there to take our pic..
  7. First one that I heard of was done by Gary Dupuis D-242 at the Deland, Fla. DZ. Gary was at the '66 Nationals at Talequah, Okla. and was limping. I asked him how he hurt himself and he said some parents at the DZ had asked him to take thier son up so he strapped him in his harness and jumped. The landing was harder than he expected. Believe it or not..
  8. Yeah, I was the first one to make over 200 jumps in 24 hours(201 in 17 1/2 hours). The ill fitting harness and cold temps(20 degrees, though that would be good for the aircraft, forgot about me) took their toll. Had to get sprayed with novicane on my butt for the last 25 jumps...Woody
  9. Howard, I have the original pic and will be glad to send it to anyone who was on board. Just send your name and address. Mace Coleman still is.
  10. Sorry I was away from my computer for a few days and I missed this. This was May of '62 at Orangeburg. Curt Hughes(C 33)second from left, Mace Coleman(D 96) forth from the left,Chuck Baughtknight(B 1079)and myself, Woody Binnicker(D624) fifth and forth from the right. A guy named Lowdermilk brought the plane down to see if we wanted to buy one and we did. Mace, Chuck,RichardBates and Myself bought it for $7500 and had insured through Loyds of London. We were going to Deland right before Thanksgiving but Mace crashed it the day before. He got out but broke his hip. So much for that..WoodyQuote
  11. Last time I jumped with Suzie was '73 Nationals at Talaquah, Okla. She was a great gal and sharp competitor.
  12. Thanks..my e-mail at the store..woodyiga@earthlink.net
  13. Howard, Great pics of your reunion. I was at the 65 nationals and made the jump into the Inn. Use to jump with Chris Lowry, Bob Friet and Curt Curtis. Is there a way I can get in touch with them...Thank Woody BinnickerQuote
  14. Read about the tragic Lake Erie in '67. Four of us bought a B-25 in '62 to take to Deland for the Thanksgiving Meet. We would put jumpers in the bomb bay. Mace Coleman( D-96) crased it in Lone Star S.C. two days before we were to go down there. He got out with seconds to spare but broke his hip. Guess we were lucky we didn't have a load of jumpers on board.Quote
  15. I've been trying to get hold of a T-7 to donate to the Toccoa, Ga. 506PIR Muesuem. Do you have one I could buy. You could contact me at woodyiga@earthlink.net..Thanks
  16. I was there in 1970 at a parachute meet on the way to the Nationals at Plattsburg and again in 1971. I flew my 180 up there that year and flew it during the meet.
  17. Michael, I know just how you feel. I did the same thing in 1974 after have been in the sport for only 14 years. You don't realize at the time that there are so many more things in this world to do. Good luck to you. Woody D624[reply
  18. Well said Dave. I met Bill in 65 when he came down to see Chris Lowery. We took him to Fairfax, S.C. and he made some of those $1.25 30 second delays. He couldn't believe it. Made him a member of our Viking Parachute Team and called him the team fossil. He was a greatguy and did the sport alot of good..Woody Binnicker D624
  19. We use to go down to the New Years meet that Pop sponsored in the 60's. I beat Gene Paul Thacker (us army Parachute Team) for first place in 67...Woody D 624
  20. Hi Ray, The 'White Hog' belonged to me and Bobby. Those were the days. We bought it from the local undertaker so we could transport all of our gear in it and wouldn't have to unload it every weekend. Bobby had a heart as big as his smile. We will all miss him....Woody
  21. Dawn, Glad you got to fly for Bobby. His short term memory was not so great after his stroke but he could still fly and jump. I hate that he had to leave us but I know he is in a better place...Woody
  22. I'm Woody Binnicker(D624). I trainedBobby and put him out on his first jump. He was gung-ho from his first jump. He made 200 jumps in 8 months so that he could get a D# under 1000(he got 911). We had to get up before dawn,go to the airport and go to 12500 and then go to work, so he could complete his D requirements. We became best of friends and started Vikings of Denmark(our home town). We bought several airplanes together and started the drop zone in Barnwell. We started the marathon jumping in '73 making 201 jumps in 171/2 hours. He flew the entire time and I did the jumping. Bobby was a great competitor and we were even able to beat the Golden Knights at some of the meets..Although I got out of the Sport in 75,we kept in touch all these years...I'll miss him...Quote***
