  1. j Walt, I am most delighted to hear that, as a whole, the good people of Houston are ...well, good people. One of the things learned in Miami, in 1980, is that amidst loud calls of hatred, racism, fear and distrust, good people were united to help those in need. I know the same is happening in Houston. My best to you and those working to make the world a better place. jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  2. Awww Bill, quit playing to your audience for once. This thread is filled with intolerance, hatred exaggerated fears and NIMBY's who would not allow these desperate individuals in their city if it were up to them. I heard the same shit as a child living near the Orange Bowl after the Muriel Boat Lift. Then, many citizens were ranting about rapes, murders, and the safety of their persons and property. Stories were greatly exaggerated or outright bullshit. Such is the nature of a segment of mankind during crisis. Many more pulled together to help a large group of overwhelmingly good people get back on their feet. As individuals, a community and a nation, we were enriched by the situation. Houston will survive and with the help of it's good citizens lending a hand to people in need, will also be a better place for it. jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  3. It's not a good situation. My family lived four blocks from the Orange Bowl in 1980, when it was a primary shelter for many thousands of Cuban refugees following the Mariel Boat Lift. We all survived it and became a better nation because of it. My mother ran a makeshift 'soup kitchen' off our front porch, others fondled their shotguns and talked about "all them foreign niggers". Like I said, who we are is determined by what we do when it counts. Make your own choices. jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  4. What basic aid are they denying to people? Wouldnt have a problem if I didnt have to pull guard duty with a shotgun to make sure we dont get robbed blind. My compassion for others cease to exist when the sound of gunfire hits. After the shots are fired your on your fucking own! Desperate need? I desperately dont need a bullet in my ass, or my car stolen, or my place looted. You're just a peach of a guy, aren't you? ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  5. The communality would be intolerance, hatred and fear. What would be your solution to the thousands of men women and children who would otherwise die or suffer greatly from dehydration malnutrition and exposure? jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  6. Your reality is the mechanism used to justify denying basic aid to men, women and children in time of crisis. Your reality is the umbrella that offers shelter to those who hate, fear and turn away when thousands of American citizens are in desperate need of food, water, clothes and a roof over their heads. You can huddle with others of your kind, for I want no part of it. Who we are is, to a great extent, what we do when it counts; when it hurts; when it involves sacrifice, work and rising above our fears and prejudices ...but we aren't talking about pain, sacrifice or work here. We are talking about merely tolerating them in your city. I listen to the rants here and am reminded of a radio address I heard a few years back, by some upity-up in the KKK, using similar rationalizations to justify their ignorance, brutality and lack of compassion for others not like them. Shame on your 'reality' and shame on those who turn their backs on people in desperate need. jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  7. If I had opinions like this, people would not think very highly of me ...and they would be right. Damn! jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  8. I differ with Freud on the concept of penis envy. I don't think it's limited to women.
  9. Use projection, much? ?????? Projection: Projection is one of the defense mechanisms identified by Freud and still acknowledged today. According to Freud, projection is when someone is threatened by or afraid of their own impulses so they attribute these impulses to someone else. For example, a person in psychoanalysis may insist to the therapist that he knows the therapist wants to rape some women, when in fact the client has these awful feelings to rape the woman. ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  10. I have nothing against guns or gun owners. My whole family are cops (Father, both brothers and my sister-in-law). I grew up with guns and my Dad started giving me lessons when I was eight. I own three and go to an indoor range just about every week and an outdoor range every couple of months. I seldom leave the house without one. It's the white, right wing, angry, aggressive freedom trampling neocons who own guns (and oil companies) that we need to watch out for. jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  11. Not a bad idea, except that many, if not most of us routinely have background checks, drug tests, etc. done on us because of our jobs and/or concealed handgun licenses, etc. Walt Pretty much like postal workers, eh? ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  12. Who said anything about putting people in jail? Who said anything about ONLY using race to profile for security? If the people blowing themselves up pretty much all fit a certain profile (coming from a jihad country, middle eastern, chechen, whatever), why is it a bad thing to pay a little more attention? Is it better to put a focus on what we're looking for or to just be totally random? If the people NOT fitting those profiles are still randomly searched as they are now... how are we worse off? The old mindset of "We would ONLY look at arabs if we profile" will guarantee that we pretty much do nothing different than we're doing now. Unless you can figure out how to have every airline passenger and everyone coming into the country interviewed and searched completely... Well then, how bout profiling white, right wing, gun loving, neocons? They are angry, aggressive and willing to trample the right of others for what they believe. They are passionate about owning guns, gun powder and associated paraphanalia? jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  13. I find you quite hard to understand.... Yeah, it's the down side of evaluating situations and forming situations based on the data. It must be confusing for the 'one ideology fits all' group. jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  14. What kind of war crimes? Like the mass gassing of 250,000+ Kurds? Or the total death toll of approximately 3M muslims between three countries, two of which were invaded without provokation? Or the financing of suicide bombers and their families? Or setting up "rape" rooms for his sons? Hmmmm... Excellent point. I agree. On a scale of relative evil, Bush comes in second place. jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  15. I find you quite simple to understand. Liberals = BAD Right-wing, jack-booted, neo-con thugs = GOOD jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  16. ahhh, another Bush basher, sigh. The subject is Pat Robertson. Please stay on topic. jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  17. I guess your talking about the Patriot Act. What in the hell does that have to do with this woman doing coke while preg? No, not the legislation, the people. The ones who either can't see the rapid creep of govt authority into our lives in increasing ways ...or the ones who believe that "I'm from the govt and I'm here to help you" is a true statement. jen That's been happening for at least a couple decades...where've you been? Sigh. See what I mean? Seriously, don't you feel the difference? It's like having a next door neighbor who is a nosey busybody for a couple of decades then having a group of Aryan Nation members move in. The first one annoyed me frequently. The latter scares me. jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".

  19. I think we may be hearing that with increasing frequency in the era of the 'patriot'. jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  20. Ahhh, your perspective is filed over there to the right. Keep walking ...go past the skin heads, red neck bikers and Texans. You'll find lots of agreement along the way. jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  21. After reading your comments for some months now, I find this statement most amusing. jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  22. I'd like to get one that says "All in Favor of the Patriot Act Raise Your Right Hand" jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  23. Christianity was a safe house to hide from Joe McCarthy in the 50's. The residual effects are still around. jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
  24. Nope, it was an emergency decree restricting the rights of its citizens and the right to execute and imprison ‘traitors’ against Germany described as a “defensive measure against Communist acts of violence endangering the state". I expect my government to have contingency plans for disaster, martial law included. Like all tools, the plans could be used for a number of purposes. The planning is a historic first, coming at a time when people are scared and willing to submit to govt actions previously held to be unacceptable. Would having the plans in place and ready to roll be of benefit for a takeover? Most definitely! Is there a growing segment of our population that would accept this? Most definitely! Do you think the German people believed an "emergency decree" to protect them from violence would lead to one of the most horrific eras of modern times? For Hitler it was labor violence, for McCarthy, communism was the vehicle, now it's terrorism. I'm saying we, as a nation, need to keep focused on who we are and what we value. I adhere to no theories. I wait, watch, and listen to what is happening and wonder where it could lead. jen ----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
