  1. I find this site http://parts.singerco.com/IPinstManuals/ useful for sorting out the differences between certain models and their functions. -- drop zone (drop'zone) n. An incestuous sesspool of broken people. -- Attributed to a whuffo girlfriend.

  3. ...good luck finding one with the cam attachment. Technically, only certain cams existed in the 6mm model, so most of the machines with the cam attachment are 6mm, but they'll all work on the 8-12mm machines. I think there were 20 cams in total, most are useless for our work, but it does do the 308 quite well. A new hook for a 20U will cost you about $30 USD. A new (ie: scavenged) hook for any model of 217 will cost you over $300. -- drop zone (drop'zone) n. An incestuous sesspool of broken people. -- Attributed to a whuffo girlfriend.
  4. In my limited experience, I've never seen a picture perfect straight stitch on a zig-zag. However, I think most zig-zags produce an acceptable straight stitch machine. My 217 does well, so do the various models of the 20U that I've encountered. You can pick up a 20U very cheap if you look around. I'd recommend ebay, but you have to know what you are looking for. I've learned to ask for pictures of the hook (removed from the machine). I also like pictures of the feed dogs and close ups of the machine with inspection plates removed. Marring/scratching on the hook and its fasteners will tell you alot about abuse and timing issues. Looking at the insides will let you know if the rust on the outside is storage rust, or something worse. You really can't tell the shape of the thread tensioning devices (discs, springs, posts...) until you get it into your hands. Fortunatly, nylon E-thread will deal with less than a less than perfect thread path than cotton 2-ply does. I had the most problems with my Bernina 217 when I started doing some household sewing with it. Luckily, I had a similar model at the National Guard rigger shop to compare it with. -- drop zone (drop'zone) n. An incestuous sesspool of broken people. -- Attributed to a whuffo girlfriend.
  5. http://www.skyteam-aviation.com/images/P1010445.JPG How many jumpers fit in there? Is that the "hop-n-pop" seating section? -- drop zone (drop'zone) n. An incestuous sesspool of broken people. -- Attributed to a whuffo girlfriend.
  6. Skydiving is an inherently dangerous activity and your internal feelings of risk versus reward should be given greater priority than any statistical survival rate. -- drop zone (drop'zone) n. An incestuous sesspool of broken people. -- Attributed to a whuffo girlfriend.
  7. Hold the stitch picker and the fabric so that you are picking away from any fabric or webbing. You really need to ensure that the evil little spear on the end of the stitch picker won't accidentally cut through anything. That little tool has some amazing destructive power in the wrong hands. -- drop zone (drop'zone) n. An incestuous sesspool of broken people. -- Attributed to a whuffo girlfriend.
  8. It's like people with 500 frefalls trying to do CRW. They couldn't dock to save their lives.... -- drop zone (drop'zone) n. An incestuous sesspool of broken people. -- Attributed to a whuffo girlfriend.
  9. I don't. If someone with 0 hours experience can build and fly an ultralight, than the same can be said for main parachutes. There's no reason for the government to get involved and criminialize the act of fiddling with a main canopy. -- drop zone (drop'zone) n. 10. I agree. Part 65, Suprart F says: B. No person may pack, maintain, or alter any main parachute of a dual parachute pack to be used for intentional jumping in connection with civil aircraft of the United States unless he has an appropriate current certificate issued under this subpart. However, a person who does not hold such a certificate may pack the main parachute of a dual parachute pack that is to be used by him for intentional jumping. You cannot maintain, or alter a main parachute without a rigger certificate. AC-105 gives a line replacement as an example of a major repair which means a master rigger is the only person deemed competant by the FAA. However, the manufacturer is also allowed to replace lines. I would argue that if the manufacturer sells me a line set he is authorizing me to finish the repair by installing the lineset. That is what makes the major repair legal when done by a senior rigger or whoever. A master rigger would have the authority to create a line or lineset from scratch and install it without the manufacturers approval. -- drop zone (drop'zone) n. 11. Letting up on the toggles, reaching with an arm, leg, or some other activity could make the impact worse. You'll usually see the above behaviours if you watch low time jumpers flare. -- drop zone (drop'zone) n. An incestuous sesspool of broken people. -- Attributed to a whuffo girlfriend.
  12. The moonshine from the USPA regulated stills won't make you go blind.... I can't think of a reason. I've jumped at Skydive Greene County which isn't a USPA dz (unless that has changed). -- drop zone (drop'zone) n. An incestuous sesspool of broken people. -- Attributed to a whuffo girlfriend.
  13. I'm not sure I why no chit-chat on the plane made pulling SUCK. However, some people are talkative and some aren't. Tandem masters are people too... Did you try to talk to anyone else on the plane? Personally I like to close my eyes and not talk on the ride up. Wait till you've invested $$$'s in gear and training and worked hard all week just to make it to the weekend... and it rains all weekend. Hanging out at the dz socialising/staving off boredom is part of the experience. If they can, but its not possible sometimes. Caveat emptor. That type of thing is a DZ policy and varies from DZ to DZ. They probably have a sign posted about it, or you signed something to that effect. -- drop zone (drop'zone) n. 14. I think it has more to do with stability than fall time. It's easier to stay stable when the relaitive wind is already moving pretty fast -- drop zone (drop'zone) n. An incestuous sesspool of broken people. -- Attributed to a whuffo girlfriend.
  15. Since this thread is going nowhere. I have one: b = Wl + Da / Be; That's the number of (whole) burritos you can consume given a certain wingloading and a certain density altitude after consuming a certain quantity of beers. 21. Living will? no. That's a concious decision. I don't want some stupid policy dictating if I live or die. There's no way a living will can cover ever possible situation. I'd rather have someone who is awake and aware make the choice. -- drop zone (drop'zone) n. An incestuous sesspool of broken people. -- Attributed to a whuffo girlfriend.
