  1. I am not disputing the numbers at all. What I am disputing is the definition of "alcohol related". It does not necessarily mean that someone is drunk or the legal limit, but the stats are stacked to reflect that. And yes, there are many DRUNK driving (which is very different than "alcohol related") accidents. The numbers don't need to be inflated by including "alcohol related" category. Would you not agree that a soldier, who can be trained to be responsible for patrols, shooting guns and driving tanks,...be responsible to drink? I am not at all disputing the health effects,..etc. I am discussing the AGE of responsibility. I am glad that you corrected yourself on that So if St Louis had same drinking age, I presume you would not have to drive so far to get alcohol, therefore cutting down on the accidents? The questions is: does having an age limit REALLY affect drinking and driving incidents?? The MJ debate, I am sure is all about how each of us are raised and what values are instilled in us as children. You mentioned you father was quite a heavy MJ user, and you saw no harm in this. My father was a prosecutor and judge who labeled every drug user and drugs as bad. I don't totally buy into that philosophy, but how we are raised and our parents' values impact our own political/social thoughts to some degree. I still don't see a major issue with the whole MJ legalization thing. Jen
  2. I was not meaning to blow it off! People who already have high anxiety, especially the interview anxiety, become more anxious, sometimes having it show in the interview, when thinking it is their only shot. If you already have mounted anxiety, and I presume there is or she would not have posted,..relaxing by telling yourself it is not the last job on Earth will help keep you calm! Jen
  3. And remember you are interviewing them as well! You are deciding if they are a fit for you. Don't go in there thinking this will be your only shot at a job. And yes, find out as much as possible about the company, their mission statement, core values, population served etc... They will probably ask why you wanted to become a lawyer. Good luck,..you'll rock da house! Jen
  4. Also, just like pointing out statistics that only prove YOUR point, you chose to quote only one paragraph I wrote in that thread and conveniently omitted the following statements I also made: I have never once stated that we should 1. keep it illegal and 2. keep it illegal because it is harmful. Quite the contrary. I have several posts in here referring to policy and what has shaped the drug policy. ...... Again, I have NEVER stated that it should be illegal BECAUSE it is harmful. I think I have even alluded to tobacco and alcohol being harmful. I keep reiterating my point in every post that my whole point in stating the adverse effects was to dispell a common myth, and one that has come out on this thread, of it being harmless. It's not. And I know that there were racist and big company movements behind early legislation of making it illegal. Now that I have cleared up your misconception of Are you not the same person who has a problem with legalizing mj for adults (21yo)*** If you want to discuss MJ again, take it back to that thread. Jen
  5. [url]If you want to discuss the marijuana issue, let's take it back to the appropriate thread. Your post has nothing to do with drinking age. I will agree that alcohol is harmful. No doubt about it. None of your stats (which could be bent any way: and as we all argued about the validity of research on the last thread) specify the age of first alcohol use or if it was underage persons. "alcohol related" also means that alcohol was simply in their system. It does not mean that they were over the legal limit or that they were DRUNK. This distorts those statistics significantly. It would be similar to saying the cause of someone's accident was caused by marijauna use, simply because it came up in a toxicology report; even if it had been several days since someone smoked mj. So, they do not list mj as the cause because of the long half life and the difficulty narrowing down that single variable. Accidents and deaths are often attributable to alcohol if there is ANY alcohol in the system. If someone has a .03 blood alcohol level and crashes, it is documented as "alcohol related" (note it is not reported "alcohol caused", but we all view it that way). Now, I know that drinking and driving is a very serious issue and am not downplaying it. We don't need to expand the numbers by "alcohol related" stats to get a point across. I know two close people paralyzed driving drunk,..both were in their mid-twenties, and both only started drinking at the legal age of 21. So drinking age did not affect or cause their bad decision. I do not think alcohol by any means is safe. I do think though, that if people are considered adults at age 18, are responsible enough to patrol the streets of Baghdad getting shot at, responsible enough to sign into contracts, responsible enough to vote, responsible enough to be tried as an adult,..then they are responsible enough to decide to drink. If we don't think they can drink responsibly at 18, then the age requirements for military service, voting, signing contracts etc,..should all be raised to 21. Jen
  6. If you read my posts on that thread, you would see I never said the MJ should be illegal. In fact I even stated I did not have a problem with it being legal. Go read it again. My only problem on that argument was that people were referring to it as a harmless drug. I was simply dispelling myths. I think alcohol is harmful too. Not the point of this thread though. Just saying that people should be able to decide to drink at age 18. Jen
  7. Leave it to the jokers of dz.com to turn everything into something sexual! I need to scan my examples more thoroughly!!! Jen
  8. Thought I would resurrect this thread. I was thinking about this the other day. Thinking about all the young soldiers who are losing/risking their lives and limbs. They at least deserve a beer! I have always thought that if you are old enough to sign contracts, get married, live on your own, vote, serve in the military at 18, then you are old enough to make the decision to drink alcohol. Jen
  9. I cannot believe that after 5 pages nobody has mentioned the possessive modifying a gerund! One of the most overlooked mistakes. Example: Wrong: "I enjoyed him being there last night." Right: "I enjoyed his being there last night." Jen
  10. I would throw an MMPI into the mix to assess full personality types, looking at things such as impulsive, addictive personality,..etc. Just my .02

    Crossfit

That's the beauty of it! There is always something that will get you. The medicine ball cleans kick my ass. Not to mention how much I hate Burpees. I still can't do the full workout of the day. But you can easily tailor rounds/weight to fit your need. I did one workout from hell (for me): 20 wall balls (20lb medicine ball), row 500 meters, 20 box jumps (24" plyo box), 400 meter run. 5 rounds for time. I literally felt ill (not sore) for 2 days. Maybe had a case of Rhabdo It's amazing to see your performance and physique change with these workouts! Unlike anything I have ever done. Jen

    Crossfit

Does anyone here do Crossfit? My husband and I developed "The Factory" in our garage. Complete with rope, gymnast rings, medicine balls, olympic weights, pull up bars and rower. This is the best workout program ever. It will kick your ass regardless of how in shape you are. Check out www.crossfit.com. My husband also filmed and edited one of the cool workouts with some Army guys who worked for him at Ft. Bragg. Here is the video on youtube. Clicky Jen
  13. WOO HOO! I got my federal job offer today! I start work mid-October. Now I can return to the shadows of being a lurker on DZ.com! Jen
  14. That's awesome! Parents aren't perfect. You sure proved yourself to your mom. Maybe you can teach me to run Jen
  15. After a baseball game when I was 10, my dad said "you run like a girl". I said "I AM a girl!" So, for awhile, I thought that there was something bad about being/running like a girl. My dad is great,..and has definitely apologized for that. Interesting how parents can say something so nonchalantly, not meaning harm, and kids can harbor it for years! I don't think I am damaged, but I still run like a girl Jen
  16. That is a good one! The scary thing is that, I am not only referring to the President as leadership either. I'm glad that some documentation in the vulnerability of the machines and the software is coming to fruition. My mom said that her vote, as well as 20% of all votes on elections in her district in Washington were thrown out because of ballot flaws this week. Jen
  17. Clicky So what do you think? This might explain current leadership Jen
  18. No. Just stating that many psychologists are discussing/disagreeing about the definition of intelligence, including the testing of it! I have no real opinion either way I have read some studies that point to women having better verbal capabilities and men having better mathmatical capabilities,..but some argue that sexes are socialized in school and community toward these areas. So much still to learn about intelligence! Jen
  19. There is a lot of study and discussion in the area of intelligence. Daniel Goleman has done some great stuff on emotional intelligence, which measures a different type of intelligence than IQ. He calls it EQ, and it seems to play a bigger role in job/relational/ overall success than IQ. Some argue that IQ tests are biased and narrow and do not really define or conclude the totality of what true intelligence entails. Intelligence is so wide and complex, to "measure" it by a simple written test and nothing else, is slowly showing to be inaccurate. Jen
  20. Any pilots out there willing to drop me in Wyoming?
  21. good point. There will always be people who don't understand our sport or community. Jen
  22. June 4th, 2006. Jump 62. Total mal (hard pull that I did not pack). Reserve opening at terminal, and very nice riser burns on the neck. Jen
  23. 2fat2fly had a much better email than mine! I am sure the response she gave me was a "brush off" too. She probably did not even read my email, but it made me feel better
