I have a log of all his flights. The ferry missions had a higher than 50% loss rate, exactly due to the lack of navigation equipment and the need to fly at night for security purposes. His other flights in theatre weren’t much better. I have a piece of one of his planes that had a nose gear collapse on landing. Plane was recently recovered in Australia.

except reality says that's not true. The USA accounts for 46% of all firearms privately owned. There are roughly 1.2 firearms per American. From the last available data I can find (2017) the US was 20th globally for Robbery Rate, higher than Canada. If you look at the list it is near impossible to see any correlation between firearm ownership and robbery rate.

One of mine was a colonel in the intelligence service stationed out of England, seconded by the Dutch military. The rest is unknown, though he did meet my grandmother during this period. My other grandfather ended up in Jackson, Miss at Hawkins Field learning to fly. He then ferried B-25 bombers to Australia to fly missions in the Asia Pacific theatre for the KNIL. His story too is filled with those moments where he was supposed to be in places he would not have survived, but by sheer luck ending up elsewhere. He too was very quiet about what he went through in the war. What we would now consider to be PTSD led to drinking, which eventually cost him his job as Captain at KLM and subsequently his life at 65.

I have said it a few times, but I am firmly convinced that history will show the Citizens United decision, followed by speechnow.org v FEC and McCutcheon v FEC, as the beginning of the end for a democratic USA.
