Quasar II's with steel flap springs grounded
Yossarian replied to councilman24's topic in Gear and Rigging
is it just me or does the 'main in pack tray' deployment look incredibly hampered? the spring barely clears the pack before it just falls to the floor as opposed to the first where it goes a good 5ft sorry mate but i think your video confirms the validity of the concerns. if it was just your life, i wouldnt mind, we all accept our own risks no matter how large, but there are people that would have to clean you up... -
dont take this as advice, im in no position to give it, but i would have turned about 45-90degress right or left depending on where i thought the other guy probably was based on where id last seen him (not ideal i know) but at least then id be sure that i wasnt over the freeflyer. to be honest id have a word with the going low, giving up on getting back and using the time to freefly in my opinion added unnecessary risk as it introduced further separation, had the potential for you to lose sight of him completely, and was not part of the plan.

When to repack main after sitting idle..
Yossarian replied to reinhart36's topic in Gear and Rigging
if i have any doubt lingering at all ill repack it, its only 10mins of my life. plus i took a main out of a bag once that had been there for 3months and it stayed in the shape of the bag... sure 120mph of wind would open it sure enough but its just peace of mind -
How Superstitious a Skydiver are you?
Yossarian replied to Yossarian's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've seen a great range of skydiving superstition, the first was when i went to Langar for the first time and it went from lift 12 to 12a... people seem to have habits from rabbits feet to the handshake before exit to kissing crucifixes to having to touch the wing of the plane before they'll get in... personally im not religious or supersitious, but sometimes i think im alone in that! -
i was always told it meant you needed an open container by then
-
ok thanks for the help, its a wings container, ive emailed the dealer, its just i was hoping to jump it at the weekend but i cant get to a DZ till friday, and then i have exams/dissertation deadlines so it will be a good month or more after that before i can jump again and if the weathers good i wouldnt be too optimistic about it being packed on the spot no matter what the bribe

I've just bought a rig from the US (brand new) and had it brought over to the UK having paid for 'full assembly, reserve pack and inspection' only to find the reserve repack card is blank, although the reserve is sealed with the red thread and lead thing as US reserves tend to be... what should i do? its another £35 ($70+) for another reserve repack in this country and after buying the damn rig im a little strapped, would it be ok to call the rigger on the other side of the pond and have it filled out on his behalf by a rigger over here? surely he'd have records of packing it and its sealed and everything? and would it help that the rigger is a close personal friend of a rigger at my dz? thanks for your help!

Accessory Gear Rental Policies / Prices?
Yossarian replied to Gary73's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
all the dropzones ive been to bar one will lend you an alti, helmet, boiler suit for free if you ask nice enough, with an accompanying lecture, the length of which depends on how nice you are and how insistent you are that yes, you will buy your own at the closest opportunity. gloves and goggles are expected to be bought around the 1st jump. some places may charge £10 but thats usually for all of it for the day, subject to being snatched back at any time should a student need it -
didnt realise you werent the one with the camera, sorry for assuming that, but were neither of you wearing an audible? sorry, obviously im in no position to lecture with very similar jump numbers to you but im wondering how this could have got so low without a breakoff. i look at my alti obsessively from exit, my rationale being that if im always looking i always know where i am.
-
2 things.... 74 jumps and you're wearing a camera id rather go slightly low than open that close, both of you look like you have the beginnings of an off-heading opening, if that had happened to me id have been slightly preturbed...
-
i also like how the iranian president is asking us not to prosecute them after they confessed to trespassing, how very nice of him... makes you wonder what was said...

no seeders at the moment

ill give it a go... wont necessarily jump it but ill see how easy it is, anyone know if this is easy with brand new canopies (ie any easier than a pro or precision pack?)
-
ive done a search but i cant find a consistent description that i understand, anyone have any photos? as far as i can tell its a mixture of pro and precision (psycho) packing
-
the question for me (other than whether or not this contraption exists) is would you trust a pack-job done by a machine that didnt require so many human check stages that it may as well be packed by a human? not sure i would, and... (im sure ive seen this as somebodies sig line) if you could teachmonkeys to pack, would you let one pack for u?

i love falling next to big banks of 'industrial haze' as it gives a good sense of speed, everything feels so slow and graceful until you hurtle past something

Attempted exit of aircraft with seatbelt still attached
Yossarian replied to peek's topic in Safety and Training
ive only ever seen buckles like (or actually) B12 snaps that hook onto leg straps -
fell through hail once. made me bleed

i always assumed the reason it was left over right was because it put more pressure on the right flap therefore offering a tighter fit for the bridle on its way to the BOC pouch, just a guess though

Static Line twists / First freefall
Yossarian replied to 14000andfalling's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i got serious twists on all 9 of my S/L jumps (the repetitions were because i jumped at different dropzones) despite an apparently spot-on body position, usually on the video you can see very slight hesitations of different lengths as the first few line-stows come off, the bag starts a turn and the prop-wash/relative wind just keeps it going, i havent seen many obviously but from talking to instructors (one with a 2-digit license number...) most linetwists are apparent before the locking stows are off. twists have never bothered me, even when ive occasionally jumped a smaller canopy and it has started to dive off ive just pulled the risers and kicked out without even a missed heartbeat. i feel so much more confident after qualifying RAPs, whether it be complicated exits (if you can master a sit exit from c206, you can do anything!) to getting out at under 3k (ive know AFF grads at 60jumps who wont get out below 5k because its 'too low'! -
ive had a protect for a few years, put lots of stickers on it so i dont look like a student, gaffa taped the vent holes to make it quieter and less windy, and it was cheap as chips, small modification with a bungee so it can take an audible, just waiting for my full face now, which i could buy earlier cos of the money i saved using a pro-tec

think for my rig it works out cheaper to go to florida for a few days (i live south UK), do a few jumps then fly it back than to get it shipped with all the taxes and what-not. im hopin to see if theres anyone coming over to uk that can take it as hand luggage though, making sure to mail the docs separately
-
so you flake out the line groups before you put the tail between your legs? and do you do this with the slider down on the grommets or behind your head?
-
although the icon is slightly more expensive than the wings i believe it comes with many of the normally additional extras as-standard, ie collapsible pilot-chute, hackey, RSL etc. i've ordered my rig from sunshine-factory in Z-hills and got a 'bundle', takes quite a chunk off the price as long as you go with a certain combination, i got wings, pilot, smart, vigil with rsl, ff pud, collapsible pc, back padding etc plus complete assembly and reserve pack for $4850 (awesome exchange rate at the time, £2400 ) are you going to get an aad?
