While it was in the original spec, the RED cannot shoot 4.5K/2540p. As it stands, 4096x2304 is the maximum resolution of the camera. That resolution is roughly 5x HD or 4x 2K. At those resolutions, lenses still resolve fairly well. A traditional 35mm negative will capture roughly the same amount of information as a digitally captured 4K file. A 4K scan of film is not enough to capture all of the information in a film negative [8K is a better scan figure], but since a digitally captured 4K file is devoid of any grain, the resolution is roughly the same. That said, certain lenses behave better on film and certain lenses behave better on the RED. As it stands, the Arri/Zeiss Ultra Primes are hands-down the sharpest lenses you can put on a RED. They're also fairly lightweight as far as cinema primes go... and they come in focal lengths as wide as 8mm. :) You never know... not a bad idea. I have a RED or 10 sitting at my place any day of the week, so any day Craig is up to it, I can provide a camera. 4K bigways... not a bad idea. It's 1/4 res, to be a tech... I really don't know what I'm talking about.

This will have to do for now. Torrents are strange beasts that I don't understand. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Well there goes 10GB of bandwidth. I uploaded it to SDM, I'll post the link when it's up. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Those of you that know me can attest that I've been wanting to get the RED ONE 4K camera in the air for a long, long time. I currently make my living as a RED camera tech/DIT, so camera access was easy enough. It wasn't until Craig O'Brien got in touch with me that we were finally able to do it. Craig made 5 jumps with the camera last week - with Sean MacCormac, Eli Thompson and myself [plus one jumper whose name I can't remember ]as the subjects. The footage is freakin' sweet. The camera body weighs about 10lbs, so flying it is lighter than an Arri 235 or similar 35mm film cameras. It's still huge, though. For those that don't know, the RED ONE is a 4K digital cinema camera. Its sensor is the same size as motion picture film and it uses motion picture film lenses and camera accessories. Every frame that the camera shoots is 9.5 megapixels - roughly 4.5x the resolution of 1080p HD or 10.5x that of 720p HD. The dynamic range is a measured 11.3 stops - a little less than film, but significantly more than any other digital video/cinema camera you can strap to your head. We shot using an 18mm prime lens [which would be equivalent to an 18mm lens using a 1.6x cropped Canon or a DX Nikon] at T16 with a 45 degree shutter. I'll leave the discussion of the camera's freefall ergonomics to OB... I'm hardly one to comment. Here is the whuffo cut of the footage I made for the RED camera forum. This clip is 1/16th the resolution of the original footage. It was a fun day! Can't wait to do it again. Next time we'll use some wider lenses. We'll also shoot some 120fps footage to go along with it. The attached pictures were taken by Eli Thompson. Thanks to everybody who was involved! I really don't know what I'm talking about.

The camera's pretty remarkable... and I've always been a Canon guy. The thing is, the D3's noise characteristics at 6400 match a 40D at roughly 400. You can get "usable" images out of the D3 at 10,000 ASA. To me, a 40D stops being usable at 800. Just check out dpreview's take on it. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Heheh, I was just in Dubai last week. I'd love the full resolution as well...

http://www.red.com/nab/scarlet It'll shoot 3K at up to 100fps [180p burst] with a 2/3" sensor... it'll record to CF cards... and it'll fit on the side of your helmet. 2009 will be very interesting. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

I'm here already... swing by the booth [SL8712 and SL8812] and say hi! I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Good call, that does look like a Deepseed. I've contacted them to see if they recognize it or have access to those fabrics. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

This one's easy. My jumpsuit is about five jumps from blowing up, so I'm in the market for a new one. I was looking through an old folder of design ideas I made ages ago and stumbled on this picture. I don't know when or where I got it [or who's in it...], but I dig a few things about this suit. I like the velcro wrist cuffs [vs spandex] and the two died camos [red on the back, darker urban on the front]. Can anybody identify the manufacturer from this one picture? I haven't been able to find much on manufacturer's websites along these lines. Thanks, folks. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Time will tell, I suppose. Trust me, flying camera is far from my primary concern at this point. DSE and I are just camera nuts - on the ground or in the air. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Hey Spot, I'll definitely see you there. Already got my helmet warmed up for that little camera... I figure it'll get delivered about the time I get my C.

Hey folks. About 6 months ago I got into a pretty nasty car accident. I survived [hooray!] but ended up with some unfortunate neck and back injuries that put me into almost five months of physical therapy. As it stands, my back and neck have improved to the point that the doctor feels it's safe for me to get back in the air. I'm not back to where I was [I'm not "fixed"], but I'm mobile, exercising again and generally holding my own. I'm heading out to Perris tomorrow for some tunnel time. I'll spend some time talking with my instructors about how to safely move back into jumping while I'm there, but I want to get as much advice as possible. The tunnel time will give me a good feel for how my freefall skills are, so I'll use that to help judge what steps I need to take to get back into the sky. Simply put, however, I'm a B-qualified jumper whose currency has slipped by six months. When I was jumping regularly, I'd generally get in 5 jumps every other week. I wasn't the most current jumper at my best, but I didn't have the money to jump more often at that point. I'll see what my instructors have to say, do it "right" by the USPA and re-read the hell out of my SIM. I'm not the only person who's had to take six months off, so I'd love some advice on the subject if folks have any. I know I'm in for one jump with an instructor, which I'm very much looking forward to. The part that I'll need to be the most careful with are my canopy skills. I own a Pilot 150 which I load at roughly 1.2. I could probably cram a 170 into my container, but nothing larger. What steps should I take from a canopy perspective? Should I just rent a container and a 190 Pilot and re-downsize to my 150? I'm planning on doing a handful of 12.5 H&Ps to get used to canopy flight again, but I don't want to learn the hard way at 12,000 feet that my canopy's too small after six months off. Any thoughts? How would you all go about it? I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Picture 2 rocks my world. I want it as a desktop pic. I really don't know what I'm talking about. -
I carry six altimeters - an analog on my chest, a Neptune on my wrist, two audibles in my helmet and two eyes in my head. What are the chances of all of them failing on the same jump? Start with the analog - give yourself something tried and true. Then start adding the toys. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

My canopy is 7 black and 2 grey. What's there to say about it? It has about 350-400 jumps on it and it's still black and grey... even at Perris. If I was buying new, would I go for a different color? Absolutely. But that's because I'm not a black and grey kind of person. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

[resists urge to correct you on everything] I kid, I kid. I got to play around with the XDCAM EX at ProMax... it's actually a really cool little camera. I wish the handheld ergonomics were better, but it definitely takes a great image. It's nice to have real manual control over the lens on a prosumer camera for once. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Your scream is so manly! I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Well I wouldn't go that fa-- I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Hey all, About a month ago I was involved in a pretty nasty car accident. Without getting into details, I messed my neck and back up enough to require physical therapy and a handful of prescriptions. As a result, I haven't made a jump in a month. It's killing me. After discussion with my doctor, the issue with skydiving is obviously the deployment. I brought up getting tunnel time and they couldn't really see any reason why I shouldn't get in the tunnel. My neck isn't the end of the world - I have my mobility and strength - but it's still not good enough to risk a hard opening in the sky. I have about a half hour of tunnel time over the past year and I'd love to get time to hold me over until I'm jumping again. Is this a terrible idea? You're all much more familiar with the risks and stresses of tunnel time than I am. Should I stop thinking about getting time until I'm back in the sky? I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Whats up with Perris and skydivingmovies.com?

green, with a dollar sign painted on. And covered in slime. Man, I didn't know they started accepting certificates. That's just shitty. I really don't know what I'm talking about. -
Well, I use the term process trailer lightly... it was closer to a GoMobile. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

My throat mic experience doesn't cover skydiving, but it does cover some similarly "intense" situations as far as audio is concerned. I currently use an Iasus NT3, though I've used the NT2 and NT Sniper in the past. The NT3's clasp wouldn't be suitable for skydiving, but I've had clear voice transmission while standing in an uncovered process trailer going 80+ MPH [process trailer = car rig for filmmaking]. Just don't wear the mic too long, you'll get a funny tan. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

How many jumps did you get in this weekend?

Man that sucks! How long until you can get back to jumping? Too long. I really don't know what I'm talking about. -

None... because I'm in a freaking neck brace from a car accident! I really don't know what I'm talking about.
