Happens to everyone who uses a Mac. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

How did you get the funds to jump!?
MB38 replied to brett1382's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I work 42 hours a week and attend 18 hours of classes every week. I take the money that doesn't get taken for school, gas and food and hand it directly to the dropzone. I really don't know what I'm talking about. -
This is all second-hand information, I'm not experienced enough to make my own recommendations here. What I've been told [and seen] is that a canopy the size that you're probably jumping... .85:1 or so... will handle a good amount of line twists without starting to spin. Considering that you're probably under canopy by about 4,200 feet, you have a lot of time to your hard deck [mine is 2,500] to kick the twists out. If you find the canopy diving for the earth and you're spinning under it, chop it. Again, on a canopy that size, it's probably not going to happen. It becomes a judgement call. Lets say you get under canopy and you have a buttload of line twists. The canopy has shape, isn't spinning and is floating along nicely... kick them out. You hit 2,500 [or your hard deck] and only have a few twists left... cut away. It doesn't matter if you're 100 feet from glory, a hard deck is a hard deck. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

I wouldn't expect the Pro line machines [Power Mac line] to go Intel until 2007. It has not been announced whether or not they will be dual core. I work for Apple. A dual 2.3 will crunch video about twice as fast as a single 2.0 iMac. Add some RAM and you're set. I'm on a dual 2.7 with a paltry 3 gigs of RAM. Renders that used to take upwards of 18 hours on my single 867 G4 from 5 years ago take less than 20 minutes on this machine. For the basics that most people do... dissolves and titles... the render will be inside of 3-4 seconds for a 15 minute video. If you have any iMac G5, stick with it for now. If it's the 1.8 or 2.0, you're set. Put 2 gigs of RAM in there [but don't buy it from Apple... we overcharge about 400%] and call it a day. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

What made you want to pursue skydiving?

I was the kid who would make parachutes out of paper napkins and tie them to toys. Bob, the action figure of the day, would give Jeb Corliss a run for his money. He'd tackle 1 second delays from the second story banister of my house no problem... just a few tough low pulls. He'd go in and frap daily and walk away. I remember one day outside when I threw him and his chute up into the air and he stayed there for a good minute or two caught in an updraft over a picnic table. Yeah. So I've wanted to jump since I knew what a parachute was. I'd make functional 7-cell chutes out of nylon and several hours of hard work. It was ridiculous. It just took me 10 years to save up enough money to start doing it on my own. I really don't know what I'm talking about. -
Theoretically, MiniDV tapes have a 100,000 use lifespan. In the real world, it's about 80. In the air at 120mph... presumably less. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

The 18-55 kit lens [get it on eBay to save money] will do what you need. It handles light nicely and is a great general purpose lens... particularly considering the short lenses you already have. The only bummer is that its focal length can't be locked down without using tape... I've seen them get loose with wear. Then again, I've seen them get tight with wear. For a

It does. Did you buy it body only, or do you have the 18-55mm lens? I know you didn't mention it, just making sure. I'm assuming you're talking about the Digital Rebel, not one of the other models. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

What lens system? I really don't know what I'm talking about.

When you get some footage, could you actually post it in HD? Use H.264 compression in Quicktime for it, the file size will stay nice and slim so it won't chew up bandwidth. I'd just love to see how it looks. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Are Gas Prices Affecting Your Jumping Activities?
MB38 replied to linc_harris's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Filling up costs almost $50 in my little WRX. It makes it a challenge, particularly when the DZ's an hour away. I really don't know what I'm talking about. -
Got it I really don't know what I'm talking about.

When you were (or are) a student......

It was the fear of the unknown. I had very minor nervousness on the first jump... I still haven't figured out why I wasn't more scared. It disappeared by the second jump and it's weirding me out. I'm just not nervous anymore... out of the Otter. My Skyvan exit had me nervous, but that was another "fear of the unknown" thing. Doesn't phase me anymore. Stability had me worried, but I solved that with 10 minutes of tunnel time. Again, fear of the unknown. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to land solo, but looking at the horizon to judge altitude actually works. Fear of the unknown. See a trend? I really don't know what I'm talking about. -
I do appreciate the links and the posts... quite helpful. I just want to restate that I'm not planning on downsizing canopies just yet... and I'm certainly not going to do so dramatically. I was just trying to figure out what the "sports car" nature of these canopies stems from. Got some reading to do. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
-
What would happen if somebody downsized their canopy too dramatically? I'm not planning on doing this or anything, I'm just curious to see what the differences would be. My exit weight's 195lbs and I'm a student on a 230 Solo. What would happen if somebody used to that kind of flying found themselves under a 200? Or a 170? Or some tiny little elliptical? Would it simply be a change in how severe the canopy turns... and how it responds to weight shift... and whatnot? Would it be a dramatic change in glide ratio? Would the flare be different considering the nature of these tiny little canopies? Basically, I'm just curious to know what the differences would be. It's going from a school bus to a sports car... but what makes it a sports car? I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Joe Jennings was dragged behind a plane in a similar manner. He wasn't wearing a wingsuit -- camera wings if anything -- but it went well enough. He just sort of flew along for the ride. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

My 10 minutes of tunnel time worked out perfectly -- I passed level 4 today. Exit altitude was 12,800, I was released by 11,000 and was perfectly stable and on heading [save 10-20 degree left from 6,000 to 5,000 when locked on] until deploy altitude. Landed without radio, flared properly and landed standing up. Score! I really don't know what I'm talking about.
-
Yeah, I remember that one. I was just wondering if there was any more info out there... no dice I imagine I really don't know what I'm talking about.
-
Forgive me if I'm being stupid [or if I'm overlooking something brutally obvious], but I've yet to find much information on this main. I was at Perris today and noticed a giant wall advertisement for the main... "The most radical 9-cell elliptical ever." I seem to remember it being called the "Mamba," but I have a crappy memory. I went on Aerodyne's site and didn't find any information. I'm just curious to read about it. No, I'm not going to jump it, I'm just wondering if anybody had heard anything? I really don't know what I'm talking about.
-
Hey man, you're not going to hear me tell you that Macs are the standard for 3D work. I was just countering opinions that it's not possible. I oughta point out that Steve Jobs is my boss. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Worst compression ever. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
-
whats the average and highest exit altitude you get AGL?
MB38 replied to Newbie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've been between 12,800 and 13,500 on my jumps at Perris. I really don't know what I'm talking about. -
I'm more than happy with my custom built $300 PC. It's more than powerful than anything I'll need, including video editing with Premiere. _Am But if you think of the cost of the software that you put on the machine... the OS, the generic bits of software just to make it do what you want... the cost is higher. When you buy a Mac, you don't just buy a shell of a computer. Very few people can make a built PeeCee work for themselves. Fewer people have legal access to all of the software that they need to get it up and running. There will always be that tiny percent of people who love to build their own machine from the ground up. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
-
Must be. In the US, a comparably equipped PC is almost always more expensive than the Mac, often much more so. Of course, it's tough to find a Mac that is sparsely equipped, which is quite common for PCs, giving the illusion of lower prices even though tons more money must be spent to bring it up to minimal Mac specs. Very true. The thing is, there's no such thing as a "bad Mac" because all Macs are designed and shipped with enough power and software to make somebody happy. Sure, you can find a $200 PC... but who wants one? I really don't know what I'm talking about.
