Is his friend "going after" this girl really a lack of respect? Agreed, if the original poster was like reeeeeeally into this girl and honestly believed shes "the one" then yes its out of order. But most people (and I'm only 24 -- so its not like this kind of behaviour was all that long ago) stopped having a rule that "you can't like him/her because I did first" in high school. And to the original poster: in over 9 years (or whatever that number was) he has done this to you a grand total of twice. how is this a lack of respect? Maybe the girl just wasn't that into you. "talking to her" is not: dating, sleeping with her, making life plans. etc etc its "talking" and nothing had come of it to date. So fine, he stepped onto your "territory" but then where is your respect for the girl. You tried. It was taking a while (and maybe she liked you, maybe she didn't) but it seemingly had not gone further. She's allowed to choose someone else, even if it is your "player" friend.

I may be wrong as I don't know you... however. are you serious? Unless this girl is the love of your life/soul mate (which you could not truly know unless you were already together for quite a while) who cares? Would you really cut loose a friend of over half your life because some random chick you have a crush on is more interested in him? Theres nothing wrong with being pissed off or annoyed... but actually considering dropping him seems a tad dramatic. However, thats only my opinion!

Are you serious? How on earth is one woman's mental illness + racism + strong party affiliation a poor reflection on Barack Obama's character? And as regards Bush, well maybe people didn't scratch themselves and then lie about it. But millions did protest against him and burn effgies of him (around the world) of course global demonstrations as "it didn't happen in the US" do not count as evidence of dislike of character. However, one nutcase seeking publicity... well clearly someone hates him sooo much that its irrevocable proof against his character. please.

The Biggest/Best Reason NOT to Vote for Obama
skysmurf2 replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
How is that a reason *not* to vote for someone? Genuine question: does the reputation of America across the world not bother you at all? Admittedly, America has never been a favourite of citizens across the world but in the last eight years the respect shown to your president and government has reached a critical low. Do you enjoy having a ridiculed and disrespected President? A President, is a statesman, the most visible ambassador a nation has and for the last eight years America has represented itself with a buffoon. Obama, apparently could and would change this image -- and you feel this is a reason to vote against him? Also how is the respect that people outside America have for Obama a sign that your security strengths would crumble? Am baffled, that Obama, who clearly is a statesman that appeals across borders, is in your opinion unfit to be elected due to this appeal. -
The same statistics but not as a percentage but in dollar figures... the US outspends its nearest rival (China) by close to 5x US' expenditure: $276,700,000,000.00 China's expediture: $55,910,000,000.00 edit to include link: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/mil_exp_dol_fig-military-expenditures-dollar-figure

Mahatma Gandhi Julius Ceasar Albert Einstein Winston Churchill Marilyn Monroe or Leonardo Da Vinci why? MG: to find what inspired him --and how he changed his life and thus the lives of others JC: I bet he'd have great stories -- and an amazing leader AE: I bet he'd be a laugh and a brilliant mind WC: Another wit -- who would probably result in great conversation with the above 3 MM: more great stories and to see how the other 4 react to her. LDV: a personal hero.

Fairly common, to have tried snorting alcohol at least once at a British uni -- especially if you were on a sports team. Couple of mates also did the shot through the eye -- they looked horrible for about a week after that. Most I've ever done is inhale alcohol fumes -- thats good fun!

Which do you agree with regarding terrorist attacks?
skysmurf2 replied to SpeedRacer's topic in Speakers Corner
On any criteria...? So, you'd back America vs KSA if the issue at hand was -- no. of sand grains or religious impact??? I think its fairly narrow minded to: one equate KSA with the entire ME and two: to assume its a them vs us issue. Personally, I've spent a fair amount of time in both and choose neither... then again thats neither here nor there as the issue at hand is: did America's invasion (well actually Coalition forces' invasion) of Iraq increase the no. of terrorist attacks against the US. -
Which do you agree with regarding terrorist attacks?
skysmurf2 replied to SpeedRacer's topic in Speakers Corner
Do people in the US, honestly believe that the entire Middle East is burka clad, electronically deprived, and bereft of women drivers, etc??? Its mind boggling... I think most prominent (influence and media attention) nations will attract vitriol. The vitriol can and will result in acts of terror -- how the nation then chooses to respond may or may not exacerbate the situation -- but prominent nations will attract attempts to garner attention (i.e. terrorist attacks) because the media reaction will spread their word (posively or negtively) across the world. The Iraq war only offers further justification to the individuals planning attacks but attacks would happen regardless. Attacking America, Iraq war or not, gets them the most attention. I am quite curious -- has the number of terrorist attacks (by non-US persons) increased since the war? Would Americans count the almost daily attacks (or attempts) on non-Iraqi persons in Iraq -- terrorist attacks or war casualties? -
just to let you know, he has done (at least) one.

Hes already been pulled out (I believe). Watched some of his BBC interviews (as a part of the no report deal between Brit press and MOD) -- he comes across as a very dedicated officer who genuinely wanted to be where he is. Its a complete shame that his privacy was violated and that he won't finish his time in Afghanistan. I found it interesting (and very telling of his character) that he said serving in Afghanistan was the most normal his life would get.

Any one have opinions on the Nikon D80... I've got my eye on it but this would be my first digital SLR (so prob. is a bit more camera than I absolutely need). Have been using a Nikon F60 for years (as a complete amateur) and I love it.

Top Gear is AMAZING... the three best combined personalities on television (possibly ever). Never Mind the Buzzcocks with Simon Anstell presenting is reeeallly funny as well. Youtube it. Used to love "They Think Its All Over" when Jonathan Ross and Gary Linekar were on it. Jonathan Ross is great - absolutely love him. Brit tv is amazing oh and i should add I am a girl and not that fond of cars but Top Gear is the best.

I would like to tell you a bit more about God
skysmurf2 replied to DropDgorgeous's topic in Speakers Corner
am home ill, but this thread its hurting my head far more than the actual illness. 2 things: 1. so will you be using your medical degree to spread goodwill? 2. please don't think of skydiving as something God will guide you through. YOU didn't land in the right area, YOU flared too high, and unfortunately YOU injured YOU. Its great that you have a positive attitude about it. -

I don't usually post in this forum but I do have two questions for the OP.... do you really believe that your experiences are a test of your faith? I fail to see how admissions into university and the resulting medical school are examples of a true trying experience. Apologies if it seems like I am denigrating your experiences, as everything is individual to the person, but within this world that we live in... I don't believe that this is a fair example of the suffering that can be experienced. second question: did you wait for someone to crash into your house to find out about your acceptance to Pretoria? If you hadn't received any correspondence -did you not contact them yourself? Could you not have taken that into your own hands? anyways.... its good to have faith especially when life throws a curveball... good luck with the rest of your degree. -
HP 7 - The Spoiler's Thread (ie don't look if you don't wanna know...)

I have - re-picked up book number 1 and can't get over how good it is as well! Is it also wrong that I can't get over how well Snape and Mcgonagall are portrayed in the movies! -

I was thinking about it and I think Dumbledore was a descendent of the brother who was the original "master" of the elder wand. Pure speculation, but it fits, especially since his family ended up in the same town as James Potter's family. Its a pretty nice theory and would love for Dumbledore, Harry and Voldemort to all be connected somehow because there are some really good parallels to be drawn, but Dumbledore's family only moved to Godric's Hollow after his Dad was sent to Azkaban...they wanted to move to a place where people didn't already know them. Still you never know... I really can't get over how good this book has turned out to be... I was so expecting to be disappointed because reality never lives up to the hype, in this case it did. There are so many intricate bits that tie into past stories and tie up past theories that I'm slightly boggled. At so many pages I had "ah ha" moments like understanding the reason behind why Dumbledore did not allow Snape to have the Defense Against the Dark Arts position until the 6th book, along with teeny gems like the Ravenclaw door and description of its common room. Although now I want to know about Hufflepuff's room... Anyways my hat's off to J.K. Rowling and now I want to read the encyclopaedia of Harry Potter... -

True and wouldn't really want them to be. I just mean that given Draco clearly wasn't comfortable with what Voldemort had him do... I would like to have known just a little more about how it changed him... but the nod wasn't a bad way to wrap things up. -

I have the same question. Also wish there had been more of the Dursley's and a bit more explanation of what happened to Draco post Voldemort. I also really liked the Dumbledore/Grindelwald story as it explained so much of Dumbledore and at the same time there was a nice parallel with Harry's fears of his father's actions when his dad was at Hogwarts (book 5). -

Unlike all the other harry potter books i wasn't immediately in love with this book. It was satisfying reading it and I certainly finished it in one go, but it seemed to lack the same quality as the others. However, I actually think this is a brilliant book - its written differently to the the rest of the books, but its meant to be like that. and it was written in such a way as to give closure... I'm not miserable there won't be another Potter book... I'm quite the fan so I expected to be. But the thing that really makes this (for me) a great books is that a day later its still got me thinking... and I'm liking it more and more. -

Have lived in: Zaire (Dem. Rep. of Congo), Nigeria, Canada, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, UK and now UAE, although my parents are in Indonesia so that is home as well. Would love to live in: Australia, Russia, South of France, and anywhere in South America... but only for short periods of time... would eventually want to move back home to UK. -
