Heads Up Displays To Debut During World Skydiving Record Attempts
Andre1 replied to cpoxon's topic in Gear and Rigging
I will probably be flamed for this but in addition to the altitude display I think the following would be cool: -Constant information on the direction of the wind, with arrows. Like 90 E > -A GPS that that directs you to the dropzone with a simple map and audible cues -Sensors on the main and reserve canopies that would let you know the type of malfunction you have. This is like a car. If your brake/toggle gets unstowed and the other is still secure for a specified period of time the sensor will go off. The display will say “Left Brake Unstowed”, etc. -A signal to let you know if another canopy is too close to you in the landing area It would not be to rely on the display but to aid the skydiver to land safely. It will be interesting to see how the heads up display will develop in the future. -
I would like to ask a stupid newbie review question. In this situation if the reserve was spinning wildly release both brakes and flare. If this does not fix the problem counter the turn with the rear riser and attempt to fly the parachute straight using the rear risers only. If you have the rear risers in an uneven position should you flare on landing or should you just fly straight and do a great PLF? Yes, I will run this by my instructors. I am asking because the wind, weather, a presidential visit to my city (created a flight restriction) and available dropzones are making jumping a challenge this time of the year.

My AFFI to me: If you see my tongue sticking out, put your legs down.

No, I just asked for the stars.

I am getting a Triathlon 190 and I will be at a wingloading of 1.0. I had long talks with my instructors about how long I will be at 1.0. I am (and my DZ) satisfied with my purchase. It is what I want. I like nice, soft, safe and forgiving landings for now. I have been riding a 600cc sportbike motorcycle for 4 years. I am about to get another 600cc sportbike motorcycle. All of my friends tell me I want the Yamaha R1 or the Honda CBR1000RR (both 1000cc). No…I will be happy with a Yamaha R6 (600cc) bike. I rather ride the heck out of a R6 than kill myself on a R1. At my DZ my instructors and experienced jumpers have the high performance canopies and I watch them fly them. I prefer to learn to fly the Triathlon 190 and get real good at that. I talked to jumpers flying Triathlons at my DZ and read the reviews on the canopy. I am happy with my purchase. Some people like Ferraris and some like Mazda Miatas. I will certainly post pictures. Thanks

The 24 stars will cost 650 Euros (approx. US$765).

This is a follow up to my original post. I am posting this to those that were interested. I also hope if someone were to do a future search on the topic of a canopy with a custom design of a country’s flag they will find this information useful. I contacted Allan Hewitt of Sky Science in Spain. He designed and flew the canopy in the James Bond film, “Die Another Day”. If you remember, the canopy had a Union Jack on the top and bottom skin. His company will be doing my design. He stated the flight characteristics will not be affected because he uses the "appliqué method" for the design. Aerodyne will deliver my Triathlon with no design. My cells will be blue, blue, red, white, red, white and red on the top and bottom skin. I will ship my canopy to Mr. Hewitt in Spain. He will add six white stars to the two blue cells. This will be a total of 24 white stars. Thank you to everyone who helped me with this. ….there is a way

This should do it. Thanks Nicholas.

The file is too large to upload. Sorry about that.
-
I think I figured out how to post the winzip file. My canopy will not have "USA" on it. It will just have the stars.
-
edited to add : oh yeah, please also post a drawing/scheme of your design so we can have an idea. -------------------------------------------------------- It is in a winzip format and I can not figure out how to post it. Basically, cells 1 and 2 are navy blue and there are six white stars on each cell. Thanks for your advice.

There are a few movies where there are skydivers with these type of canopies. If it can safely be done I want one.

Does anyone have a canopy with a design on the top skin? Does anyone know of a manufacturer that can do a design for the top skin? Finally, does anyone know where I can purchase enough material for two cells where the design is painted alongside the original color? I ordered a triathlon and they say they can only do a design on the bottom skin. My design will be on cells 1 and 2 of a 7 cell canopy. I have been told by very respected people in the sport that if there was a design on the top skin the canopy will not fly straight and would have to be adjusted by toggles (not what I want). The only other option is to paint the design when they initially color the fabric. Because the canopy is made in South Africa and canopy manufacturers buy fabric in large rolls this may not be possible. Thanks Where there is a will there is a way.

I am a law student and I graduate from law school in 13 days. I can not give you legal advice however I strongly suggest you speak with an attorney in your state. If you can not afford an attorney check with your local bar association. They can direct you to free legal aid centers and attorneys offering free legal advice. You can also call law schools in your area that have legal aid clinics. They would have the best information (for free) on your exposure to liability in this area. This is my .02

I am black and I am AFF Level 5 which means I jump with one jumpmaster. You could film a jump I make. I would jump with the jumpmaster holding me and he\she would release me once I am stable. This means a JM would have to hover around me and you would have no input on the skydive. The jumpmaster will be in complete control of the skydive. At my level it would most likely be me in freefall, perhaps with some turns and then I open my parachute. The jumpmaster would be hovering around me so you would have to work that out with the film. You could write another skydiver (my jumpmaster) in the scene to be near me. If this meets your terms let me know. I will then see what JM would be willing to jump with me. I live in Philadelphia but I have jumped at Hinton in September. This means you would have to pay for my time, a jumpmaster’s time and my airfare to London. How much are you willing to pay? I could be in London Saturday. Cheers

Yesterday I landed out on an empty high school football field due to winds and no penetration. I did my base parallel to the end zone. Then I turned and was just right of the goal post on final. I did a very minor turn to get me going straight down the field. I went to half brakes at 15 feet above the ground. I went to full flare a millisecond before my foot touched the ground and did a perfect stand up landing. My feet touched down on the 25 yard line and I was standing up on the 8 yard line.

http://www.studentpilot.com/ Read the Message Board. There is a lot of information on the experiences of student pilots and seasoned pilots. http://www.aopa.org/ Another helpful sight. You can get six free issues of their monthly magazine. It has a lot of useful information for student pilots. http://www.beapilot.com/indexfl.html This sight has a ton of information about learning to be a pilot. I am a student pilot in Philadelphia. Good luck.

proof read help: I need your opinion on this letter
Andre1 replied to SuperKat's topic in The Bonfire
I graduate from law school on December 2nd. I will be taking the Bar exam in the states of Pennsylvania (my home state) and New Jersey in February. I can not give you legal advice until I pass the Bar exam. I can not give you legal advice after I pass the Bar exam unless you live in PA or NJ because each state has their own laws. However, I would be allowed to discuss general legal principles. There are a lot of legal issues in your situation and I strongly suggest you speak with a lawyer in your state. If you can not afford an attorney you should contact your local Bar association and ask them about free legal aid. Another option is to contact a local law school and to ask them about free legal assistance programs in your area. You should talk to a lawyer BEFORE you send the letter. You will be a lot happier knowing your rights. You do not have to tell your landlord you are talking to a lawyer. However, when you do communicate with your landlord at least you will know your rights as a tenant. Thanks and good luck -
You have no friends under 2000 feet-Sparky

If you run out of air in either sport, you're screwed. Communication is difficult beyond body language and hand signals. They are both time-limited (air supply/altitude) -------------------------------------------- If you run out of air when Scuba Diving you can borrow some from your buddy (assuming he/she has some). Also, you can attach extra tanks in various places between you and your boat. :)

Yet another sleepless night due to this

------------------------------------------------------- Does your DZ have a Cessna where you can jump from a strut? I have jumped from a Cessna 182, an Otter and a PAC 750XL. With the Cessna the jump started as soon as the door opened (in my mind) because it is so small. Also, by the time you get done playing James Bond on the strut between 10,500 and 13,500 feet you are just going to jump and go into the flow of the dive without thinking about it. That’s my experience. Being what my experience is (little) if you consider my idea, be sure to discuss it with your instructor. Good luck. Thanks, Andre -
Jumping from a Plane in an Emergency
Andre1 replied to Andre1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Here is a newbie question. My non-skydiving friends asked me this after the JetBlue emergency in California when the plane had a stuck nose wheel. If a commercial jet plane were in an emergency situation and you had your rig with you would it be proper to asked the captain (if there was time) to depressurize the cabin and let you off at anywhere under 14,000 feet to save your life? If there was no time to ask and you were below an altitude requiring depressurization and found yourself in a crashing plane (and for arguments sake had enough time to get your rig on) would you open the door and jump to save your life? I am sure there are pressurization issues I am not aware of. I am a student pilot though and I intend to wear a parachute (for pilots) when I fly any rental aircraft so I have more options in an emergency.
