  1. dude, i'm not jumping with you anymore. Next thing you know you're going to show me your journey t-shirt collection... -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  2. My two jump buddies got me right after we got down... p.s. dont leave the shirt you used to wipe off the whipped cream in the trunk for over a week, the smell will knock you down when you open the trunk again :) -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." 3. What a bizarre thread. I always thought the less wind the better... -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere

  5. If you check out the skydive radio interview with Billvon, it may help clear things up. Hearing someone tell it is much better than reading it, i find. http://www.skydiveradio.com/shows.htm Download Show # 46. If you havent listened to SDR yet, i think you'll like it. -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  6. 1.5 hrs with no traffic. Coming home on sunday night always takes an extra hour because of traffic getting back into NYC. Totally sucks! -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  7. I, um, inadvertently went into the swoop pond at the Ranch, on level 5, so i got signed off :) -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  8. Pops, I appreciate your feedback in other threads & your concern now but I dont get what prompted that reply ? I was referring to what Tdog posted, re a water landing in a body of water with a current, etc. I never posted anything about disconnecting the RSL in order to cut away above the water. (What I HAD forgotten about though was disconnecting if I've noticed higher winds & there is a danger of being dragged when i land. Which is what MY 1st post was referring to, what i was looking for from you guys) -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  9. So I assume CRW dont jump an RSL to begin with. The only other time I've heard disconnect RSL advice is just before a water landing. -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  10. What are your most common mental markers that would tell you, "disconnect RSL," before cutting away your main. Besides a wrap you need to get clear of or hanging of the tail of the aircraft, what others? -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." 11. Note to self: Avoid Diablo & Mamba canopies for a few thousand jumps. I hadnt realized that more performance necessarily meant more instability. -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  12. Why does the planform make it behave more radically? Is the entire system under more tension because of the lines attaching to that shape? Where is Brian Germain (or some other canopy designer) when you need him ?? I'm trying to get a sense of what exactly it means going off the student gear and getting your first rig with a Sabre2 in it, loaded 1:1. I could tell when I demo'd it that it definitely flew faster and with better control but it didnt seem like i was on top of a wild horse or anything that could go crazy at any moment...but i guess all of our canopies have that potential. -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." 13. morning, I am aware of that issue in terms of the canopy shapes being different. I wanted to get a discussion going of actual differences in speed of the mal, speed of alti loss, etc...I didnt mean to focus on the fabrics Perhaps I should have titled this thread, "Mals under a Nav 220 versus a Sabre2 210" -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  14. After reading the incident thread of the fatality at Prattville, I was wondering if some of you experienced people could point out the differences between having that same kind of mal under a Nav of the same size, for example. There was much talk of Sabre2 being not the best choice for students and new jumpers, if things go wrong. So if you had a busted steering line and line twists under Sabre2, how much faster would things be happening? I had nothing but a couple of minor problems under the student gear, Nav 260 & 220 and have had nothing (knock on wood) under my sabre2... r -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." 15. at first, it looked like pilot inverted the plane to spill you out!! I was like, "ME NEXT PLEASE!!!!" -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  16. "caught myself cartoon style on a treelimb" that made me laugh. Good catch. -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  17. I did a two-instructor aff jump in 1994, when i was 22 and then some random tandems here and there. Went into aff again in 2005 and got licensed. -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  18. my original reason was because the fear was too delicious !! That brain stem buzz when I let go of the plane on my first AFF level was too intense to not do again... "if this doesn't kill me, i'm definitely doing that again!" i got off on the terror i felt in the first 20 jumps or so :) I keep jumping because its the most fun... -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." 19. Should Stump from Skydive Radio downsize from a 120sq foot canopy to a 76sq foot canopy? Good thing he's got people like Dave & Corey around who say things like "thats f-en stupid" and "thats crazy, dude" Stump's plan to put 5 or 10 jumps on a 109 & a 99 before settling on the 76 sounds like he wants to get on the Darwin Awards. We like Stump and don't want Stump to get f-ed up. Rainier p.s. BUT, if you DO get f-ed up Stump, can i have your RV and wingsuit? (I dont have the jump #s for a wsuit but I will at some point ;) Check out their show for the week of 4/24/2007 to hear their discussion on it. Its only a few minutes in.. http://www.skydiveradio.com/shows.htm -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." 20. With the above-mentioned packing advice all sewn up on your part, I would then combine it with some other first that takes your attention instead, like your first hop n pop. :) thats what i did... (unless you're uncomfortable with that ;) -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  21. dude I was just freaking out about that the other day. My last jump was 2 months ago so i havent packed since. I'd hate to lose that hard-won packing ability. I've been thinking of just pulling the main apart and packing it a few times to keep in practice... -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  22. They're required AND lots of fun too. If you want to make it even more interesting, do your hop-n-pop and your unsupervised packjob jump at the same time :) I did that and it was SWEET. -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." 23. Overhead shot of Cameron Rolfe swoop on Page 25, awesome! I've never seen anyone capture a swoop from that angle before. I'd like to purchase a print. Anyone know how i can contact fotog, Zsolt Reviczky ? latrz -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  24. I think my biggest challenge is just relaxing and taking it slow. I can take as long as i want to practice landings, patterns, freefall skills, tracking, spotting, all the basics. I dont have to succumb to get-there-itis in terms of progression or jump numbers and all that. I dont have to be on a 4way team this year or jump a camera or get a coach rating (yeah right) or anything like that. I can have fun and take 5 years to get my basics down, discuss everything with instructors & just chill & have fun. I can succumb to the gobbling down jump numbers & moving too quick into freeflying or whatever, as easy as the next guy... This sport is a bit on the dangerous side so no one's opinion of how fast i'm progressing, or my perception of that opinion, should determine how soon I'm trying new things. Screw that. Its funny, but i have to remind myself of this periodically... -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door." Quote from dz.com somewhere
  25. Typically i invite about 50 people a year. Once a year for the interoffice email invite, once a year for the group of friends email invite. I'd say maybe 20 have actually come out in about 4 years. Of those, 5 have made more than 1 jump. Of those, 1 is thinking about doing AFF. Of those, 1 cried after landing :) I get the usual questions too. One guy asked me, "is it 100% safe?" Whenever a fatality makes it onto the whuffo radar, invariably one or two people will call me the next day to 'talk' At first I made the arrangements & drove people but then too many people flaked so i just left it at, "I try to go up every weekend at least one day, weather & time permitting, so make your reservation, here's the #, and i'll meet you up there." I also avoid the "can my wife call you so you can reassure her?" thing. I try to hit them right between the eyes with the fact that its the most amazing thing i've done but that you can die. End of story. That doesnt dissuade people who really want to go up... -Rainier Sparks Brother #1 // "I vaguely heard someone yell "wait!" but by that point i was out the door."
