Maybe you could put a Cobalt 120 lineset on it... close enough right
-
Well, I don't have anything on the Alpha, but here are the line specs for the Cobalt and Space canopies made by Atair

Should scientific meeting organizers boycott Louisiana?
VTmotoMike08 replied to SpeedRacer's topic in Speakers Corner
Got an example? Better yet, how about several examples. If there are "many things", surely you can think of at least a couple examples, right? Most things taught is science class rooms are laws, which are theories that have been proven to be true in every circumstance that they have been tested. Things like gravity come to mind. I'm sorry that our educational system has failed you. Furthermore, it would help to avoid writing in fragments if you want to be taken seriously. -
As someone said, it might not be lies (unless it is obvious and contradicts itself). I have several versions of my resume that highlight different aspects of my experience. Some jobs care more about different aspects, so under descriptions of experience, I might list different accomplishments when applying for different jobs. All of it is true though. Karma is a bitch.

I totally agree, when are we going to start including this theory of intelligent design: http://www.venganza.org/about/open-letter/ I assure you there is as much evidence to support my theory as there is yours. -

Cliff notes please -
So could facebook, in theory, do this (legally)?- Facebook has at least partial rights to everyone's photos. They can essentially resell them for profit if they feel like it. So they put together a massive directory of every category of image that they have and sell the package to advertising companies and make huge bank off it. Want a photo of skydiving? Sure, we can sell you that! How about kids playing soccer? Of course. Photos of a tropical resort to use in your vacation advertisement? Got it. If they could legally sell other people's work for profit, then I will probably pull all my skydiving photos (taken by me) off of facebook (although they would still own it) and never upload new ones. That would suck.

I am posting this in the photography forum instead of the bonfire because I am hoping for serious replies. I would be interested in feedback from DSE or others who have some experience with media copyright issues. So it seems facebook has a new terms of service agreement that says, essentially, that every photo you have ever uploaded to their site is their property forever, even if you remove it, or delete your facebook account. Some reading: http://mashable.com/2009/02/16/facebook-tos-privacy/ http://consumerist.com/5150175/facebooks-new-terms-of-service-we-can-do-anything-we-want-with-your-content-forever WTF? So if you ever put a photo that you took, of you and your friends jumping (or anything really), it would then be illegal for you to do basically anything else with it. If I understand this correctly, you could not even give it away to your friends because it is now facebook's property. Forget sending it in to parachutist magazine, or even using it in something like a DZ newsletter or a Christmas card. Facebook's response: http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=54434097130 My summary: "You can trust us." Almost everyone I know who is a camera flyer has posted some of their stuff on facebook. Its a great way to share photos and videos with your jumping buddies. But now it seems that if you do this, you no longer own your work. I'm a beginner camera flyer and I have a few of my videos on there too. I think its BS that they can still own the rights to the content even after you remove it from the site/ and or delete your account. Is this even legal? Anyone gonna stop posting their stuff on facebook? Comments?

To sell or not to sell?
VTmotoMike08 replied to surfbum5412's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Actually, its pretty good. The cost of new gear has gone way up, so the value of used gear has also increased. I had two friends who recently quit the sport sell their used rigs for more than they paid for them (although they also were used, so the gear is now on its 3rd owner). -
Generally not, but its her body and I'll respect what she wants to do with it.

I predict that it will be back around $3.50/gal this summer, around $5/gal next summer and then it will slowly creep up to about $9/gal (adjusted for inflation) around 2016, when we start to feel the effects of true supply decline due to peak oil. A few years after that is when it starts to get really expensive, like to the point that it shuts down society as we know it. I think we are all gonna die. I base this prediction on the half dozen or so oil blogs and websites that I read on a weekly basis and the several hours of reading from various sources that I do most every week. I hope I'm wrong. Ask me if I think that alternative fuels will come online in time to avoid a disaster, and thats a whole other long discussion.

Trying calling up your local T-shirt shop and asking what the artist's hourly rate is. They can make pretty much anything and I bet its cheaper that what the bike shop would charge you. I have had some pretty complicated designs made for T-shirts and it has never taken the artist more than an hour, which ran about $35/ hr in my area.

Flashback... If you're a hottie and you know it...
VTmotoMike08 replied to Yoshi's topic in The Bonfire
I'm not much of a bonfire poster, but here goes... Yes, I have been called out for the excessive self love I've gotten a lot of compliments about this first one. I would be interested in knowing if anyone can guess how old I am in it, I've gotten 10 years of range when people try and guess before. Others are in Colorado and New York. Something tells me that I am gonna regret posting this. -
At some BS company diversity training I had to go to a year or so ago, we talked about this. I can't find the particular material, but we learned about some professors who did some research where they sent identical highly qualified (but made up) resumes to several companies that had posted job listings. The only difference was that some resumes used names that were highly ethnic and difficult to pronounce. They did this with enough resumes to eliminate most random chance and variation in responses. The simply truth was that people who had more common, pleasant and familiar names got more call backs from employers. So, you might not fail at life with a weird name, but be prepared for a more uphill battle. Additionally, I was told flat out that being a domestic applicant is an advantage when applying to a graduate school program that is dominated by foreign applicants.

Phoebe Oliver Todd Rita Hussein But whatever. I'm sure there's good people out there with those names who hate the name Mike too. Just my personal tastes.

Hmm, well I appreciate that some people have had a good experience with it, but when I called my retailer of choice today they commented that they had "a lot of returns" on it because it simply did not work the way it was supposed to. The exact words were "its a crap product and doesn't go off when it should." I realize that someone could probably say that about every product on the market, but if multiple people had returned it to the retailer, that was enough to make me buy something else. Your results may vary. I decided to stick with a more established brand. Not intended to slam anyone's product but that's the feedback that I got from a major retailer.

Nova's judgment day: Intelligent design on trial
VTmotoMike08 replied to jclalor's topic in Speakers Corner
Ya know, I spent 20+ years of my life listening to people like you tell me why I should believe the same things as them. I went along with it for a while, but I eventually learned that I could never bring myself to think like that. In that time, it has been made apparent to me that it is useless to present facts to those kind of people, because they do not base their beliefs in facts. Everything that you hear, you will try to fit it into your tiny model of God without seriously considering the possibility of that model being flawed. Some people are just incapable of rational thought. *shakes head and walks away* -
Thought I would bump this thread because I am considering a new audible alti. Does anyone have any remarks now that it has been on the market for a little while? Specifically, can anyone comment on its reliability and how it compares to an L&B product, which enjoy a very good reputation? The features list is impressive but I want to know that it will actually beep when it should! Also, there doesn't appear to be a listing for this in the gear section of this site.

So, this is not in regard to this specific case but... I have seen an hour of coached time in the tunnel going for an extra $150- 200 above the cost of the time itself. My boss has a PhD in engineering and his hourly rate that he charges to clients is $175. Tunnel flying and coaching is also a skill but lets state the obvious and say that it is not nearly as hard or as demanding as working as a professional engineer. That being said, there is no way I am tipping a guy who is charging that kind of coaching fee. First, I'm gonna try to find someone who would do it for less. Then, I am going to demand that for that kind of money, I also get a detailed "jump plan", his full attention on my flight and a video debrief and take home the DVD. Jesus Christ, for $200 I kinda think I should get a little more than any one person could give me in an hour to begin with. I don't know how much of that goes to the tunnel and how much goes to him, but if he is not getting most of it then he needs to have a serious talk with his boss about charging reasonable rates. I am really turned off by the tunnel because it costs so much. (I have about 3.5 hours in various tunnels)

Nice circular reasoning. Paraphrased, you claim that life is support for the existence of a spirit that produces life. Feelings and self awareness is not the same as a spirit. I call those things "feelings and self awareness". I think, and have reasonable evidence to support, that these things are caused by chemicals secreted by our bodies in response in environmental stimuli. You are claiming that our feelings and emotions are a product of a supernatural, invisible, undetectable force that you call a spirit Not trying to put words into your mouth, but that is about how you sound to a lot of other people.

I dunno, I'm not a doctor or anything but I would venture a guess and say that it is a similar reason to why your calculator resets to zero when you take out the batteries. So its not like a computer where it write to a hard drive and can bring it back, but more like a basic calculator that only remembers things when it has power supplied to it. Or maybe it is still there and we just don't have the capabilities to read it yet.
