  1. 4 pages of reading http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=3786686;page=1;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=25;
  2. I agree. Which is why I think we should just rid of gen eds and core curriculum entirely in college studies. There's a time and a place for general education- its called high school. I've only been out of college for two years now but I feel that gives me enough perspective to say that the music appreciation, history and art classes that I was forced to take while I was studying for my engineering degree were a complete waste of my time and money. That time would have better been spent taking more technical electives. I say finish up the general studies in high school and leave college for things that will actually train me for my chosen career.
  3. Full timers (if there are any) get first dibbs. After that, it is based on who signed up to work for the earliest. So if you commited to work two weeks in advance, you jump before the guy who said he wants to work the day before.
  4. Priceline.com also offers a similar service when you buy the trip through them. I only glanced at the fine print but I think it does pay for evac service and to get you home but your regular insurance has to cover the hospital bill. I paid an additional $16 for it when I went to the Puerto Rico boogie. thankfully didn't use it!
  5. Thanks for a well though out reply. Here's my solution to funding water and sewer projects. It's based on the simple philosophy that if you make a mess, you and you alone should clean it up. 1. Crack down on non point sources of water pollution. If you've got a farm and all the fertilizer and chicken shit runs into the river, prepare to clean it up and prevent it in the future and or pay a steep fine. The agricultural lobbyist who prevent these laws from passing should be taken out back and beaten. Regulation and enforcement of this is spotty. 2. Crack down on point source pollution. Everyone so far in this thread has not considered pollution from food processing, which is a HUGE issue. If you've got a food factory that pumps all its waste into the sewer system, and has no pretreament facility onsite, and pays the municipal rate for water and sewer, this has got to end. Some of those factories crush the treatments plants and pass the cost along to others. Again, regulations and enforcement varies and we should beat the lobbyist that push the laws allowing this to a pulp. If you can't do this, then you've gotta tax the group that uses their end products- you know, everyone who eats food. Since the lobbyist have successfully prevented pollution from food processing from being taxed, you have to tax it when it comes out the other end. You only shit if you eat so taxing the TP users seems fair, even if they are on septic. You can fairly avoid this tax if you grow your own food, make your own TP and discharge all your waste to a properly maintained septic system on your private property. Or, you can pay the fair cost to live in a civilized society. 3. Tax those who use certain prescription drugs more. All those hormones that you shit out cause treatment obstacles that are not even fully understood yet. I'd say $2/ pill should be a decent start towards the research. It could cost billions to eventually get all the hormones out of the water and we don't even know how it will even effect us yet. Beat the pharmacy company lobbysists who block the legislation. You can fairly avoid this tax if you eat right, exercise and stay healthy so you don't require as many drugs to live a long life. Or, you can pay the fair cost to live in a civilized society. If we can get all that passed, I imagine we can find the money to fix the plants in a way that is fair to all users. Everyone pays in proportion to how much they use the system. Now, I'll be happy to go into more detail and say just how much each group of users should pay and pitch the proposal to all your local governmens- for the right fee, of course!!! Of course, all those are long term solutions. Maybe taxing the TP is just easier the doing all the above!
  6. Because almost EVERYONE in the country is downstream from some one elses sewage effluent. Your local shit flows downstream to someone Jerry. You and I rarely agree, but you hit the nail on the head there. Anyway, I hope it goes through, for the purely selfish reason that I work as a consulting engineer to several municipalities and it would be great for business if they built some new plants. If you don't like it, you can always go take a shit on your mayor or city councilman's lawn- without TP, of course
  7. Of course he shouldn't have to pay for it in your hypothetical situation. Her body, her abortion, her money. Simple as that. But the larger issue the complex situation when the male wants a baby that the female doesn't want to have. I agree that the right thing for her to do would be to carry it to term and into his custody, then pay child support. Maybe this has happened twice, ever. In the real world, she runs off and finds the money via beg, borrow or steal and he is shit out of luck. The responsible thing for the male to do in any situation is to be discerning in who he sleeps with and not sleep with a woman before he is ready for the possibility of a pregnancy. Even with birth control, there is still that small possibility. However, this is about as likely as getting all your affairs in order in case you go in on your next skydive- everyone knows you should do it but given the small chance of it happening, most people simply will not do it. Yes, there is a great inequality here. No one ever said life is fair. OK, now someone give me a witty one liner about how birth control is like an AAD...
  8. I had a buddy who busted himself up in a hook turn years ago. A couple months after his hospital release, his nurse shows up at the DZ asking for him Me thinks that stalking by females is pretty under reported... because sometimes the guy getting stalked kinda likes it Agreed that this one sounds bat shit crazy tho
  9. All good things in this thread from people who know a lot more than me, but I would add that you should use a hot knife around the edges of the hole that you make in the strap for the female end so that the threads do not come loose around it. Lining up the snaps is crucial, so take the time to do it right because you really only get 1 try. Also, I would put a couple pieces of gaffers tape over the nut on the inside of the helmet, even without threads sticking out past the nut, it still seemed to snag for me. O ya, when testing it for snags, make sure you try tightening it the first couple times when it is off your head, my friend got his helmet stuck on his head like this I had a snap added to my factory diver shortly after I got it. 600 jumps and 8 tunnel hours later and its still holding nicely.
  10. >>Or construction machinery operator. $40K to just sit in a chair and push buttons. Ya, but only if you're a union operator. Those guys have a contract that says they never have to leave the machine and they have a whole other employee (the spotter) who does nothing but walk in front of the machine and tell him where to go. If you're non union, you can bet the foreman is making you get out of the machine and perform labor with the rest of the crew. Great example of how union employees do half the work for twice the pay
  11. So did he notice that the cells were blown out? I have seen two very experienced TI's (one was an IE) land a tandem canopy with a single blown out center cell with no problems, didn't even notice anything was wrong. I would think that 4 blown cells would create a noticable difference, but I could be wrong. That being said, I would chop and land the reserve if I noticed 4 blown cells.
  12. http://www.atheistsnever.com/ Here's a great response to the next moron who spouts the line "You can't have morality without religion"
  13. The hanger has been vacated. I wasn't there but a few jumps were made today because it was relatively warm. I understand they will be packing outside and student manifest was run out of the classroom trailer. This setup will continue for the foreseeable future while we look for new accommodations or try to find another way to stay at the airport. The new airport manager isn't really that big of a deal, its the entire airport authority board that hates us. So no good news.
  14. Is there a thread for this yet? I searched and didn't find anything. I've always wanted to make it and it looks like it might be possible this year. Airfare is actually pretty reasonable still. What I really want to know is are all the hotels really 10- 15 miles away from the DZ like google maps says? I gotta make sure I have a way to make it back after a night of partying and that cab fair would add up pretty quick, if cabs even come out that far. Who has the info?
  15. >>So, where does the basis of right and wrong come from? One must have a standard, from which to judge. I baffles me that people still think this is a good argument for the existence of (any) god. There is a clear evolutionary advantage to cooperating within and outside of our species. So, the basis of right and wrong clearly comes from actions that either help or hurt the survival of the species and, by extension, the individual.
  16. I believe in science because it is testable and open to revision when presented with evidence. Ya know, kinda lends credibility and all.
  17. So I know nothing about the 500 way project, I heard there was some drama between the two big way groups but I personally don't care. Will there be a boogie or anything going on at the same time as the record for up jumpers? It would be awesome to go to Dubai and jump!
  18. >>The Asshole Athiest that try to get crosses taken down..PISS me off...they are cymbles of Love, They hurt no one.... Huh? The cymble[sic] of the cross means love? The central idea is that man is a piece of shit, only this very narrow interpretation of god can save you, and if you don't believe in this message you will burn in a lake of fire and that means love to you? Oh and fuck all the people that were born into a different religion, they are all going to hell? Ya, thats love
  19. Care to back that up with reasoning, or are you just content to state it as fact and expect people to believe it? Please list one. Shit, if it is so full of them then you should be able to list at least 3, right? BTW, the non-existence of god is the default in any reasonable discussion. Why would the burden of proof be on anyone but the believers?
  20. I've got a pair of the tony pants with a cargo pocket. Its pretty small and flat, it doesn't affect flying. However, when all the sky chicks see the sunglasses pocket with gators and the Mirage on my back, thats when the panties start dropping. So get that too. I prefer to keep my phone in a chest pocket, less likely to get damaged if I slide in a landing. The cargo pocket it too small to put a removable slider in, you would want to big pocket on the back of your leg with an elastic band at the top if you want to do that. I'll add that if you decide to also get the jacket from tony that it is cut long enough to go either tucked into the pants or over top of them and my leg straps hold it in place so I haven't had a problem with it coming up.
  21. I disagree, there is nothing hotter than a chick with a nice pair of boobties
  22. I think spending 700 dollars on a jumpsuit when the 200 dollar jumpsuit works EXACTLY as well is a 500 dollar waste. Have you bought a jumpsuit in the last couple years? A new, custom fit RW suit will cost about $500 now, maybe more. The base price on a Tony Suit pit special is now $320, and that has no options, not even booties. Fairly easy to get over $500. $200 will get you a cheap used one or one of the non-custom ones in paragear the DZs give to students. Prices go up
  23. Not saying I'm right and you're wrong... just different opinions. But... I believe the exact opposite of everything you wrote!
  24. Actually that is exactly what they are banning... and it's not just teachers to students, but teacher to teacher or anyone else for that matter employed by the school system. People should be able to wish each other 'merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, quanza' or whatever, where ever they want, when ever they want. Nice job cherry picking what I wrote and completely missing the point. Student-to-student, fine. Teacher-to-teacher in casual conversation, fine. But as soon as a teacher says Merry Christmas to a student, then a state employee has endorsed one religion over another in state business and that is illegal. Sorry if you think your religion gets a special place because you are in the majority, but you're wrong.
