A few questions about your DZ & equip
ScottyInAus replied to ScottyInAus's topic in Safety and Training
I'll start us off. Landing Area: We have a student zone about 2kms from the DZ thats is used for your training tandem and your first solo landing (AFF1). 50m round with another km of cleared area. Also have another Student landing zone about 100m from the DZ used untill you get your A Licence. 25m round with another km of cleared area. The A Grade zone about 20m from the DZ for the rest. About 20m round. Real Grass!!! We do beach jumps at Point Sampson and Port Walcot and often do jumps at the Tambrey Pub Oval, you need a B licence and a Display D to do these. Student Gear: Wings Containers. (FF Friendly) Hickster 240 x2 Sabre 190 Sabre 170 BOC Throwaway/Collapsible PC Two Action Operation, RSL, also if Silver is pulled Main is cutaway (same as SOS) Cypres 2 Pics of student rigs. Sorry probably shouldn't be in S&T Cheers, Jason. -
A few questions about your DZ & equip
ScottyInAus replied to ScottyInAus's topic in Safety and Training
I've been stewing on this for a while, I just want to get an idea of what other DZ's are like, so I'll run through some Q's. Landing Area: Do you have different areas, and who is allowed to land where. (include beach jumps, oval jumps etc.) What size are these area's. Distance from the DZ. Student Gear: Container type. (FF Friendly etc.) Canopy types and sizes. Deployment type. Cutaway/Reserve activation. I think thats all for now, Cheers everyone. Cheers, Jason. -
At the risk of sounding like a broken record...
ScottyInAus replied to Tyrion's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Up here, North W.A, we almost stop jumping because it gets to hot, not to cold 5 people (+ pilot) in a C182 jumpsuited up with rigs for a 5 way, great fun on a mid 40deg C day in summer. Can't beat the views of the coastline or the beach jumps though, Cheers, Jason. -
Wow heaps of difference Aus Op Regs. 5.2.2. Other than allowed by 5.7.15, the main parachute must be open at a minimum height of 1800ft AGL, However, Students that have not completed Stage 7 must have the main parachute open by 2200ft AGL (Canopy Open NOT Activation Height) 5.7.15 The exit height may not be lowered to less than 1500ft AGL for the holder of a Display "A" or Display "B" Licence on display decents and parctice decents. Seperate exits with immediate openings are required. Sorry about the quick Hi-jack

Congrats Travman, yer we had heaps of fun, the video's are a laugh to watch too Pete wants to take 2 4-way teams to the nats but I will have moved to Perth by then so won't be able to jump with the guys in Wickham unless I get a fly in fly out job, we'll see what happens. Cheers, Jason.

We just finished competing in the APF Spring Web League and placed 3rd, YAY!!! 3-Way Novice, first comp, had a great time, I wonder if we would've done any better if we had've done the third series not just the first 2 FS 3-way Novice: 1st: Just Wing It, Sydney Skydivers, NSW. 2nd: Brakeless, Darwin Parachute Club, NT. 3rd: Dead Squirrels, Wickham, WA. 4th: Hungry Pole Smokers, Wickham, WA. 5th The Uncurrents, Wickham, WA. Cheers, Jason.

I dare say, wearing weights and actually "sinking" would be more like FF. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Have you had a car accident driving to a dz
ScottyInAus replied to reddevil1's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Haha cheers Gem Cheers, Jason. -
In Aus, you have to do; B: Your B-Rel table (Formation Skydiving) and have at least 50 jumps, 7 consecutively nominated landings within 25m. C: 100 jumps, 20 landings within 10m and 5 consecutively nominated landings within 25m. Cheers, Jason.

I hit a Kangaroo on the way home one night, don't have any pictures but damn that was messy, 6.5G's to fix, lucky it was a work car Cheers, Jason. -
Hanging so you are laying on your back the same way as the plane? Thats what our Rabbit does for 5 way tracking jumps

Nothing I can say is going to make anyone think this is a good way/idea so I'll keep it simple. I actually thought about not posting, due to the fact I knew this would happen. My instructor has in excess of 7,500 jumps in 25(ish) years, he currently flies a Velocity 84 and what I am learning from him is amazing. He puts so much emphasis on canopy control it's great. I do trust my life with him, yes, although if he asks me to do something I don't feel confident/happy about, I won't do it. I jump about 7-10 times a week and don't intend on jumping less than 8 times a fortnight. (if this changes, so will my plans.) The reason to go from a 150 to a 135 is because I have ordered a container (for a 135) but it wont be here for about 6 weeks. No. I had no intention of going any smaller, for a very, very long time.

Matt, thats insightful, thank you.. Dave, 1. Yes I am, the only reason I am downsizing the way I am is that my instructor is really helping me out and feels confident with me, He is basically telling me when to downsize and what to go to. He is making all the calls. 2. I have thought about that and am actually a bit worried, I'll have my C Licence by the time I visit another DZ but yes I have thought about that. Cheers for your concerns :) Cheers, Jason.

My progression, not quite textbook... I'm roughly 200 exit weight. Hickster 240 (4 Jumps) Sabre 190 (15 jumps) Sabre 170 (30 jumps) Sabre 150 (16 jumps & still jumping) -- Stiletto 135 (within the next 50 jumps) Cheers, Jason.

Apparently the Golf Ball is the most recognizable shape/object... Just food for thought

Sorry, Should've been a bit more clear, was trying to keep it short'ish. One of our 2 instructors is basically on every load anyway, sorry I forget that other people don't always get that due to larger DZ's

This is how our AFF course goes at Wickham in Australia. AFF 1 - Jump 1 -Tandem, Practice Pulls, Alti Awareness etc. 1on1 under canopy instruction. (One of the only places in Australia that does this tandem) AFF 1 - Jump 2 - Solo, 2 JM's, same as previous but you're alone under canopy (radio of course) AFF 2 - Solo, 2 JM's, Delta and 90deg turn. AFF 3 - Solo, 2 JM's, staying on heading, arm and leg awareness, 1 JM MAY release you and come around in front of you. AFF 4 - Solo, 1 JM, Same as AFF 3, JM will release you. AFF 5 - Solo, 1 JM, Unlinked exit, 360's and docking. AFF 6 - Solo, 1 JM, Similar to AFF 5. (Note, you are now allowed to jump unsupervised) AFF 7 - Solo, 1 JM, Dive exit, Backloops, Tracking. AFF 8 - Solo, 1 JM, Dive exit, Slowfall, Fastfall, Backloops, Frontloops, Tracking & turning while Tracking. AFF 9 - Solo, NO JM, H&P Yay All Done!!! To answer your question I believe you should only go back to your last AFF course. Although I was pretty sure most of your jumps had to be done in that 3 month period, the 3 months your Student Licence (Pink Card) is valid for... You will also have to go through a lot of the ground work/trainging you have already done, just to ensure you remember it. Cheers, Jason.
-
I clipped the door of a C182 with my rig chasing a 5-way speed star out... When i got stable i was ages away from the rest of the gang Someone did a H&P and hit their elbow on the step, they didn't notice it hurt untill someone on the ground commented that they heard it... Cheers, Jason.

The pilots I work with prefer the heading given in degree's. Once I asked a pilot to fly west and he asked which way west was. 270° worked better. I don't usally ask the pilot to give green to nearest 100th of a mile The nearest 10th will do. Only one answer, hmmm, is it really that difficult. Haha yer my bad, you know it was supposed to be .1 Cheers, Jason.

Just enjoy, I screwed up plenty of my exits on my AFF, got it now and have been great ever since... I'm sure your instructors will be cool with you as long as you can show you're stable in freefall. Have Fun!!!

New jumper...need A license
ScottyInAus replied to ragglesnarf's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Start with learning to pack. In Aus you can't get your A licence without being "cleared to pack" I don't know about anywhere else though
