Minimum height for BASE??? I have friends that do a 173 foot cliff, but they've been in the sport a while. Also, when you consider height, you have to consider landing area and alternate landing areas... it's not just the height factor. Oh, and you also have to consider whether you go stowed, hand-held, PCA, or static line. If you are really interested in the sport, I suggest going through the course that is offered by Basic Research. They do jumps with you, teach you about the gear (there are a lot of differences between skydiving gear and BASE gear), and they teach you how to pack (again, different that packing a skydiving canopy). They do have requirements on how many skydives you have... I believe 150. BASE is a lot different than skydiving though... you have to be able to make split second decisions... and there's no reserve... so you better have balls of steel. First off, BASE is only ILLEGAL in govertment parks... it's the trespassing factor that is illegal everywhere else. BASE jumpers aren't insane, contrary to the belief of most people. You would think that skydivers would be more open minded about it. Check out blincmagazine... they have a public BASE board. You can post, but most BASE jumpers tend to be VERY careful about who they talk to since the cops frequent the web site. Also check out baselogic. I know quite a few BASE jumpers, and can answer some questions for you, but don't ask for names or places to BASE, cuz you won't get any answers about that stuff. There are a few organized legal jumps such as Bridge Day which is next month I believe. Hope I've been of some help. Blues! MarkM, I don't see how you think it has to do with student canopies being so big.... and I don't think it's just a GIRL problem... I stood up my Level 3 AFF with a huge student canopy... YEAH!!! Cool BASE jump... though I don't know of any BASE jumper that would be willing to do it, since they'd end up in jail (fined for trespassing and endangerment) with a confiscated BASE rig (which the cops are not required to return to you... $2000 down the drain). I personally think that a "dark" sense of humor signifies a person that doesn't truly fear dying. Of course, none of us WANT to die... but we also want to LIVE... and that requires living on the edge (for most of us anyway). I know that when I jump out of that plane, I want to land safely, but I also know that if I don't, I would have died doing something I loved... not on the freeway because of some drunk or something. I joke about bouncing... I think we all do... maybe it's just our way of dealing with the fear of not being able to live to jump another day. Just my pennies worth. Blues! Dar
