The Great AFF Experiment has been an Abject Failure . . .
g3ninfinite replied to NickDG's topic in Instructors
A major difference is I have provided examples and referenced trade papers on adult education. You have said what you LIKED better and then claimed that your opinion alone made it better. Your opinion, while compelling, does not turn anacdotal evidence into data. You liked AFF better. Great, while that makes the program better for you in your situation.... You have ignored any evidence given and instead replied with how much more you LIKED AFF. You claimed that you learned canopy control and spotting after AFF... But you had done SL jumps both civilian and military prior to your AFF experinece. So to claim that AFF teaches canopy control and spotting as well as SL is not a claim you can make based on your educational experience. You have only repeated the story how AFF corrected you from chipping in freefall. Granted, AFF teaches freefall skills better than SL. You have constantly ignored my point that that is only one part of a students required skill set, and how that skillset is both the least important a d the one they will work on most. It is impossible to continue the discussion as long as you ignore the points raised and instead focus on your personal favorite method based on a single incident. I was not trying to discuss your personal situation, you insisted on ONLY discussing it. Yeah, you only offer "facts" ie, a paper that can be interpreted to support my opinion as well as yours (students learn better by doing) Your opinion does turn anecdotal information into facts either ... here are some of your opinions. No offense, but I am willing to bet you have never done SL. You were wrong, I have both SL and IAD experience and the IAD progression is the same as SL More opinions ... SL has some serious advantages over AFF. It also has some serious disadvantages. You have to weigh them all. SL encourages self dependence... AFF encourages dependence. SL does a much better job of teaching canopy skills, Why? It still takes 25 jumps to be off student status. The AFF student has the same opportunity to learn canopy & spotting skills as the SL or IAD student. If he doesn't it is the Instructor's fault, not the method. More opinions ... I tend to think that a self dependent student with good canopy skills is SAFER than a dependent student with great Freefall skills. SL takes more time... Time that can be spent learning. AFF is fast. The AFF student can spend the jumps after Cat G&H learning canopy control & more spotting on their way to the 25 jump for an A license. I see MANY more SL students that can spot than AFF grads. More anecdotal evidence from you. I see lots of AFF students at our DZ that can spot simply because we are a Cessna DZ that keeps teaching students after they have passed Cat H. Again the problem is with Instructors, not the method. More opinions ... I see MANY more SL students that have no issue leaving at 3k. I have seen AFF grads freeze in the door. I've seen 200 jump guys freeze in the door ... so what? Talk about anecdotal evidence! As far as research there are tons of papers written about the kinesthetic learner who learns better with IMMEDIATE hands on feedback. I'm hardly in a minority here. I'm not here to get into a pissing contest with you. I was responded to the original thread comment that stated that "AFF experiment was a failure" as a fact. I concur -
anyone have release date yet?

anyone ever attach a go pro to a liquidflatlock? Or is the proprietry mount a must?
-
aren't you supposed to use your own d-bag and pilot chute?
-

-
On a side note Anyone know if the entire reserve spectra ripcord needs replacing to go from metal d-handle to pillow?
-
found this.... not much info but oct sounds good and a good impression is better than a shitty one. http://pointofviewcameras.com/blog/pov/article/gopro-hero-wide-hd-first-impressions/

Ordered a Vector 3 through Square 1 today. Reserve Spectra Rip Cord standard plus all the trimmings. Good Luck to me!

Edited for you. I know its my call and I have been reading up on both. Hoping for Riggers and people who have used both to chime in.

About to drop my cash on a rig looking at the Vigil 2 and cypres 2. Ill admit that the appearance and marketing of the Vigil 2 has impressed me. Looks like a top shelf piece of kit in comparison with the tried and true Cypress 2. Whats the real low down? which is better and why?
-
anyone have any new info?
-
yeah the dealers have them on order and they trickle in..... only one perris had that day.....
-
i walked into square 1 @ perris and grabbed the only they had today. Cant wait to jump it. But I think Im going to be putting it inside the helmet

this is definitely the case. While Im not swimming around in money, I do make decent money and I PREFER to buy things new. Sure I could save some money, but I wouldn't really be happy with my money spent. Plan is to go NEW container that will fit 190 down to 170, NEW AAD, NEW RES and used Main. Thanks blink.
-
It sounds like you have already decided what you are going to do and came here hoping someone would agree with your decision. You have probably already heard advice similar to what you are getting here, from people at your DZ, but they didn't give you the answer you were looking for either. Good luck. actually im doing something entirely different, thanks to blink. gonna rent and get down to 190 then 170 and when the time is right jump on that v348 with a 170 storm and 176 op
-
Not a Kid here, but whatever that point is moot. Im not concerned with looking experienced and or having a small rig... I was under the impression that the cut of the micron panels was exclusive to the micron but blink has saved my day and shown me that the same cut is available in a v3 m series. I only prefer to buy new. thanks everyone.

1) The largest Micron is sized for 150 main (full fitting) and a 143/160 Op. reserve (standard fitting). Stuffing a main in a container too small will not only be a bitch to pack, but can put unwanted strain on the container and stitching. The V348 would be a great alternative, it will hold the Spectre 170 (full fitting) and a PDR160/OP176 (standard fitting). V310: Width A: 10 Width B: 11 Length: 17.5 Thick: 5.5 V348: Width A: 10 Width B: 12 Length: 19 Thick: 5 If you think 1" on the bottom width and 1.5" on the length is going to make a difference on your cool factor, it's not. 2) Why not get a Vector3? They're identical to Micron's aside from an inch here or there, and they have all the same bells and wistles. They come in any color pattern the Microns do. Thanks for this.

I thought I made it clear that I would not jump the rig until I thought it was safe...(been under similar canopies). In any event. I've read that a 170 will fit in the micron, so if that is true and a PD 160 OP can fit... are those similar enough to run? My standing weight is 165 should be down to about 155-160 by nov. I don't want you guys to think I'm just going to buy this and wish good luck to everyone. My main question is in 5 months with another 70-80 jumps can i conceivably downsize from the current 230 to a 170 with from what I understand now, a 160 op res?
-
First and foremost, I understand that canopy sizes are dictated by skill and training before jump numbers. Heres where Im at... Im at 19 jumps, gonna grab that A license within the next 2-3 weeks. i can foresee myself hitting 75-85 jumps before years end. I would like my first rig to be a micron with a 170 storm/spectre. Realizing that container would require me to field a 143 PD Op RES reserve I beckon the question... Typically how soon does the average joe jump a setup like that? FWIW my weight is around 165 I'm stuck on the micron because A it looks awesome. I love the container pattern. I can get it with ALL the bells and whistles I'd like. What I'd like to do is order the custom rig in about 2 months all the while renting gear and 2-3 months after that(or whenever I feel its safe) start jumping her.

I have a Gas. Its AWESOME. The lens however does not flip up as per the Mamba. If thats important to you the gas is not YOUR answer. Don't Make ANY mistakes about it skydiving helmets are far less cumbersome than DOT approved head protection(read motorcycle helmet) HOWEVER they don't provide nearly the same level of protection.
