Can someone explain this to me? Ed Scott's message in Parachutist
strop45 replied to jinlee's topic in Safety and Training
Not sure what you are trying to say? There are alot less lawyers (per capita) here. We don't have anything close to the level of ligitation that you have in the USA. Here you have to pay for legal advice and you generally can't sue for personal injury. And yes, to all those who think filling in an incident report for an off-landing is a waste of time and probably of little real value to anyone, I agree. I'm not sure precisely where the requirement comes from, however the form is sent to the CAA. blue ones. Here even an off-landing requires an incident report. Any medical assistance requires a incident report. There is value in increased incident reporting. The questions are just how, when, what. This is one of those rare situations when regulation is probably the best way forward (as per Australia, New Zealand etc.) The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein -
+1, happy to have the ads while they work easily and don't use most of the screen. Good case of the advertiser's cleverness causing the audience to flee.... The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Thanks for that. That requires a launching point at the correct distance and orientation from the DZ as well as nice steady winds which don't change much. Coming from a small island in a large ocean, thats not a common situation here. Also requires the balloon to be collasped and refilled to do multiple loads. Here they just launch from place X, drop load one, reload, relaunch...etc and your chance of being near the DZ is essentially zero. So how does that work? Powered balloon? The only balloons I have jumped were powered by the wind... Great ride and jump, but required picking a LZ from an area which I had no knowledge whatsoever of other than what I could see from 4000'. I didn't have enough skill and expertise at 55 jumps to manage that safely. If the balloon is powered or otherwise controlled so that the exit will be most likely be over a DZ you are familiar with then I don't see it as too much overload for a heads-up jumper with 55 jumps. That's not 100% correct. The student allowance only applies to those people under 25 whose parents total income is less than $100,000 NZ. The amount of the allowance depends on parents income, how far away from the course they live, whether they live together etc.. Aussies need to live in NZ for two years before they can claim this allowance. Most students end up with substantial student loans to finance course costs. Sorry, but clearly we understand different things from the same words - perhaps you could quote where they disagree. It seems that almost everyone is saying that you are wrong including Jan. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Disagree. Nothing Mike has said is necessarily diffferent to that Jan said. It looks like you are adding in some other factors to reach your conclusions. USPA rules allow 16 year olds to jump with parental consent. Assuming that it is actually the father asking where he can arrange to do this, then the answer is any DZ where the DZO allows it as USPA/FAA rules etc allow it. Its seems that being a greenie doesn't carry any specialised weight, albeit it grants specialised powers The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Look on the bright side, you won't have any worries or concerns about being unstable

Fair enough, but I'm a mere 52 years old, so I'm guessing that you have me beat by more than 5 years Incidentally saw my first ever hand-held calculator 42 years ago, an HP :-) still use one and RP on my android phone calculator today. No question you have received shit service, but complaining because its an international call and in a different time zone - really??? Where was NZA located when you decided to give them the business? Also you don't have to ring at 3am? Usually either the end of your day or first thing in the morning will work with business hours in New Zealand. Hopefully someone from NZA will sort this out for you soon. The people from NZA are all great people, apparently they are just poorly organised and crap at business !! I think that while there are no mandated battery changes, you still need to have the battery replaced when it runs down (the time varies according to the number of jumps). The unit warns you when this is required. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Hi Trunk, Thanks for the comments. I have tested the mark I version by trying to torque the camera of the helmet and by hitting it with 3.2555 whacks of pressure from a piece of wood, i.e. I hit it just hard enough to risk damage to the GoPro case and could see no sign of damage to the mount. I have now thickened up the outside mounts to 5mm, giving you effectively 22mm of PLA holding the GoPro, spread across 5 uprights. I guess I could add a tether to the rear of the unit, however I don't think it is necessary. If you PM me an address, I'm happy to send a mount to destroy. kia kaha Wayne The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Kia ora, Thanks for the feedback. IMO the square1 design looks less snag resistant than my design. Clearly we are looking at this differently. I imagine using a line like a piece of dental floss - hold each end and rub across camera/mount - if one piece can go into camera/mount, then add another etc etc - can you jam lines? If yes, then you have a problem as deploying lines hitting the camera can snag it. With the square1 design it looks like you could get the line between the camera and the mount and jam it. If you rap the lines around the camera/mount then possibly they will be more likely to tighten below the camera with my design and not release, however IMO this is less likely than the lines hitting the camera/mount from the side and snagging. I have looked at producing a 'box' which covers the back of the camera going rearwards on the helmet so that the lines can't wrap around it at all, however if this leaves any gap between the helmet and the box, it introduces a bigger snag hazard than the wrap it solves. Yip, PLA printed by 3D printer is more brittle than ABS etc which has been injection molded. Because of the 'grain' its a little like wood. The solution is to use smaller layers, higher temperatures and higher fill volumes as well as aligning the 'grain' to maximise strength. Do I trust it for skydiving with a gopro, yip I do. I'll report back more once its got 500 or so jumps on it. In terms of snag proof, I think the current design is better than the standard GoPro mount, and I'm currently working on improving this by preventing the lines being able to wrap around the camera. I love my GoPro HD2, but I don't like the standard mounts. Here's a little something I printed with my 3D printer. Any comments? That's because its mostly not true. IMO/reading of the stats, if you spend a day driving a car, your risk of serious harm or death is much lower than a day at the DZ where you do 5 jumps. A day on a motorbikes and a day at the DZ are probably about the same risk. The statistics concerning flying and driving are based around multi engine commercial planes with 2 pilots, not skydiving jump planes. Put another way if everyone spend the same amount of time skydiving as driving in a car, the death rate would increase much more than twice. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein -
Why should the position over the ground have any significance at all? I really don't get it. The only thing that is important is if the canopies are close together, i.e. the risk of a collision. I think you are completely, but understandably wrong on this one. Bit like BG and the 45 degree rule.... The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein

Regardless of wind direction and speed, let me know where you are jumping that would allow a 10 second separation for a zero ground speed situation (THAT would bake my noodle) so I can avoid that place. You're getting silly now. Please keep in mind that young jumpers are reading these forums. why? If the airspeed is the same at exit and opening altitude then 10 seconds is adequate separation regardless of actual airspeed/groundspeed. e.g. plane flying at 80knots, wind is 80 knots all the way to ground. You exit 10 seconds behind group. After opening they are moving at 80 knots away from you, i.e. your separation at opening is still 10 seconds. Of course you are now moving at 80 knots relative to ground and actually landing at the DZ may be somewhat challenging. In practise no-one would jump when wind was 80 knots on ground (or at opening altitude?), so this is only a theoretical exercise. You are a skydiver, it sounds more like people at the DZ you went to didn't like you very much. First time or has this happened to you before? You don't create friends or respect just by tipping, in my experience a smile and a good attitude goes further. Equally paying lots of dollars to the DZ doesn't make you part of the in-crowd. If this is the first time you have ever had this reaction or felt this way, try another DZ, if not then maybe its time to look inward for the answer. At the end of the day its easier to change your mind and outlook than everyone elses. The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." -- Albert Einstein
