search dropzone.com for RSL threads - this has already been beaten to death. If you are spinning, once you cutaway, your body is no longer spinning, it is going in a straight line. centrifugal force, plain and simple. Pull the friggin' cutaway/reserve handle and stop worrying about it. Any wiggling, tumbling, spinning that happens AFTER you have pulled the cutaway handle is YOUR OWN DOING......not from the spinning canopy that you just left in the sky. Whether you are face to earth or belly to earth, you reserve pilot chute launches into clean air. lay there and let it do its job. as others have said, if RSLs were so dangerous, we would have banned them, but they have saves countless lives. There is no faster way to get a reserve over your head (other than a skyhook perhaps) to get a reserve out and over your head. I especially like the people that say "I don't use an RSL, that's dangerous.....but I got a Skyhook!" I've been wearing one for 27 years, 7100 jumps, and perhaps 25-30 malfunctions, so my experience is far better than any theory that people may come up with. I had a reserve over my head every time, almost always due to the RSL.

FAR 105.45, Help Me Understand This Convoluted Rule
tkhayes replied to skydived19006's topic in Instructors
Operator is the operator of the equipment or aircraft referred to in the regs. But case law is there that shows it could also be the DZO or other persons on the dropzone involved in the conduct of day-to-day business. Owner, while I could not find a specific definition in the FARs, is the owner of the aircraft, equipment and/or business. There are PLENTY of cases out there where the owner of an aircraft has been found liable or had FAA actions taken against them for the actions of the 'operator', even if they were not even present during said operation. That case law would also hold true in this case. The tandem master fails to teach the ripcord pull for example, but the dropzone (owner) has it in their syllabus. If an accident occurs and then the fact of the non-teaching of the ripcord became apparent (i.e. a tandem video demonstrates that it was never taught), then The "person conducting the parachute operation" - who happens to be the tandem master AND the owner AND the operator of the DZ AND the pilot could have actions all taken against them. Easiest way to avoid #4? Teach a ripcord pull. THen there is no question that you were following the regs, even if the DZ does not require it. "Here's an altimeter and here's a ripcord. I am pulling at 5000', if you see this needle at 4000' or less and we are still falling, then you pull this ripcord. Please do not pull it above 5000' as you may put us into some danger with the other jumpers exiting behind us" (13 seconds to recite) or something like that, if you do not normally teach ripcord pulls. If you follow the ISP and teach ripcord pulls on the first jump, then you are already in compliance with the FARs fully. -

we I would I guess, but be realistic, I would have to ask for some $$ to make up close to the new prices. -

Sabre 1 was a great canopy but it opened hard (at least every so often). PD never really acknowledged the issue, but I had 2000 jumps on various sizes and every so often, no matter what you did, that thing will rock you. Sabre 2 they supposedly fixed it, but it is really a different parachute altogether. I hear they still have opening issues from time to time. Hard openings will add up. take that advice from a bug guy, 48 years old with 7000 jumps (and 2000 on Sabres) It hurts to get out of bed in the morning. 1. Find a parachute that you like, not by brand name, but by test jumping lots of canopies. 2. FORGET the ones that opened hard, even if they only do it some of the time - it will start to hurt 3. learn to enjoy 800' openings and soft and smooth - especially if you want to still be jumping in 20 years. 4. don't chase the trend, think of what YOU really want to fly every day, and if you cannot put your canopy down on ANY jump in an unusual situation (off DZ, congestion, long spot, etc), they you need to re-evaluate what is over your head) I bought a Spectre with Dacron lines.... like a jolly jumper on opening. I still load it at 1.6 to one and it flies and lands great. I can put it down anywhere and invariably, I will land on the DZ (almost) every time. If I am landing out, I don't care, because I know that I can put that thing down without incident anywhere. TK (achy older fart)

TSA's Large Aircraft Security Program Proposal
tkhayes replied to Lolie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
everyone needs to reply to this if you ever want to jump out of a Casa, DC-3, Hercules, Caribou, whatever in this country again. It will make it difficult to do so - and we already have a hard time getting aircraft for events. This will put the nail in the coffin for many large aircraft that are at least, sometimes accessible to the skydiving public. -

We just earned BBB's A+ rating - no complaints in the past 3 years. (actually no complaints in the past 15 years, but they only show the last 36 months on their website). SO, where are you going to spend YOUR Christmas Boogie? http://www.skydivecity.com TK -
The United States of America...a Giant Ponzi Scheme?
tkhayes replied to mpohl's topic in Speakers Corner
it seems to be going that way, but luckily, we actually have elections every few years, and some hope of changing it. I use the French Revolution as an example (a lot). When the rich get so rich and the poor get so poor, that is what happens. The poor rise up and take control, regardless of what power the rich might have. That can still happen, but with a new more liberal leadership, is likely to be subverted by more 'socialistic' programs in the USA since we actually have an electorate that dictates what it wants. That does not mean greed and $200M/year CEOs are going to go away, but i think the near future at least will see some changes in that department. Companies are going to have to start taking better care of their employees, and governments are going to have to start taking better care of their people (since the people IS the government) to ensure basic survival. After 1-20-09 this country actually has some hope. 4 years ago if you asked me the same questions, I would have agreed wholeheartedly with you..... -
as in anywhere, if you are going more than 10 over the speed limit, then you are asking for it. If you are the fastest car on the road, REGARDLESS of the speed limit, then you are a target. So don't be the fastest car on the road, they will always bust the other guy and don't go more than 10 over the limit. Right now, on Chancey Road near Skydive City, they lowered the limit from 50 or 55 to 45 and they are out almost daily busting people, so pay attention. TK's $0.02 worth

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separation_of_church_and_state_in_the_United_States I could find other references I am sure but that would be a waste of my time and yours I expect, since you already know this. Read the part about the Supreme Court, which gets to say the 'final' interpretation of the Constitution (at least until a newer or different ruling), which has time and time again 'separated' church and state, especially in the rulings in the last century. so yes, I restate: There is separation of church and state, even though those words are not written exactly in the Constitution. So my statement earlier, still stands as correct.

whenever I hear Bush talk, all I hear is Charlie Brown's teacher. 41 days to go.....

you fought in the military to DEFEND the constitution of the USA, remember that please. That constitution allows me the freedom of speech and religion. It also defines the separation of church and state, so I truly hope that while you were defending that document, you were NOT doing it as an 'act of God' or perhaps 'doing God's work', because that would be wrong BTW, 'what' exactly do I have coming? A life of guilt-free existence, comfortable in my own life - lots of friends and family? Yep, my life sucks - I got it coming.......

Nova's judgment day: Intelligent design on trial
tkhayes replied to jclalor's topic in Speakers Corner
yes but the original point was eluding to Jesus' followers and 'non-violence' There is plenty of violence to go around - much of it perpetrated by religion and religious views. Reason #57 to stay atheist for me. "If there was no religion, there would be no evil" -

sure http://www.google.com/search?q=christians+in+the+military&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a I'm not saying that it is a 'christian war'. But I am saying that there are PLENTY of Christians in the military, including a lot of brass, that firmly believe they are doing 'god's work' by invading and killing people. Much like there are plenty of Muslims that feel they are doing 'Allah's work' by killing the infidels. It scares me (on both sides) when these people are holding weapons. -

No, but the DEVOUT FOLLOWERS of Jesus killed and invaded for 2000 years (in his good name), and given what goes on in the US Military today, it is still ongoing...... -
not sure why anyone would actually read anything into articles like that - there are equally dozens of articles about GWB, alleging cocaine abuse, alcoholism, guiding the Whitehouse by the Bible, being a drunk, catering to his cronies, gutting the Constitution and generally being STUPID.... but no one paid any attention to those articles.

Nova's judgment day: Intelligent design on trial
tkhayes replied to jclalor's topic in Speakers Corner
because that is what makes the most sense with all the science and evidence that we have today. glad we all agree on something. And yes, the natural laws have always existed (or at least all evidence currently available tells us that) Because we ended up on a planet just the right distance from a sun, with the right amount of temperature, water, matters, carbons, energies, etc etc, to begin menial, but sustaining life. I am also sure that there are millions of other places in the universe where life exists and/or has existed in many different forms. not necessarily. And not everything is possible in evolution. 95-98% of all species that have existed on the earth are extinct. So lots of things are possible, but not 'everything' is possible, and evolution was not 'chance' occurrence, it was the dying and breeding of species over millions of years with far more failures than successes. A singularity of matter is theorized and QUESTIONED daily by the scientific community to continue its validation - and they are willing to change if and when new evidence arises to alter or discriminate that theory. People in this world are still executed daily for 'questioning' the deity of a 'God', despite the lack of evidence of their existence. I can't be certain, but I am certain that no evidence of such a singularity exists, and until I see such evidence, I shall not buy into it. THEREFORE, there is no credence to us being a product of anything other than evolution, which by the way, has supporting evidence by the truckload....... -

The country elects an asshole, (Bush), let's him fuck up, RE-ELECTS him again so he can fuck up even more, and then they bash the new guy before he even gets into office? wow...... let's see in 4 years what everyone thinks of Obama, - at this point there is NO WAY he can do worse than what we have right now.........

Nova's judgment day: Intelligent design on trial
tkhayes replied to jclalor's topic in Speakers Corner
OK, again, MOST of the world, at some time throughout history: 1. Thought lightning was angry Gods 2. thought the world was flat 3. thought black or colored people were inferior and/or incapable of learning 4. thought that the world was made of layers, earth, water, sky and fire, 5. etc. etc. So excuse us if we question the 'rather heinous error of judgment' when we see it based on faith alone. and I have no idea why people of greater intelligence than me continue to believe in Gods. But that does not make it so. But the wealth of knowledge that we have accumulated over the centuries, and the wealth of knowledge that we continue to accumulate definitely throw it into question. And while science grows and progresses, replacing old theories with new ones as the evidence continues to change and support those new theories, religion continues to stomp out the same dogma over and over again. 'Belief' means absolutely nothing if indeed you are wrong. gods, Easter bunnies, Santa Claus, and the green slimy monsters under my bed all come from the same place as far as I am concerned.
