"nothing appeared to be wrong...." exactly the complancency and assumptions that get us into trouble. I really doubt the canopy got 'worse' or the damage progressed AFTER it opened. The damage is done during deployment and not much after that. Same thing happened to me a few years back. What do you learn? CHECK YOUR CANOPY. full control check, steering, flar, slow flight, the works. LOOK at it! FLY it! I ended up chopping a tandem at 2200' and had a Cypres fire and a lot of questions to answer. TK

Bush: U.S. Needs Smarter Ways to Meet Energy Needs
tkhayes replied to Jimbo's topic in Speakers Corner
sure, I 'll just let it go - tens of thousands dead, higher taxes, soon-to-be ruined economy, global climate destruction, sonar killing whales, less education, less health care, higher travel and insurance costs, deficit out of control.... guess I'll just 'accept it' as the way it is. TK -
Bush: U.S. Needs Smarter Ways to Meet Energy Needs
tkhayes replied to Jimbo's topic in Speakers Corner
does he mean "Smarter than de-stablizing the Middle East with a war?" Just like Bush to try and deflect the blame - jesus christ, who is the president that handed out massive tax breaks for people who buy gas guzzlers right after 9-11? Now he wants to be our friend with 'conservation'? this guy is a trip..... TK -

From CBC website today: http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/04/15/sealgloberetract-050415.html nice going - no wonder we are all so friggin' ignorant about what is really going on. Cannot even ttrust the most basic of media stories anymore..... Glad to see it got caught and retracted - now go CLUB A SEAL!! TK

Thanks to everyone who made it out. Since March 18 and including Guy Wright's Z-Team weekend, some 700 skydivers visited Skydive City and did some 11,000 skydives. Parts of Easter weekend were a wash due to weather, but overall, a safe and fun event. The place looks like a ghost town right now, but we can all relax for the next while for summer. Have a safe summer everyone, thanks again, and hope to see you all next winter. TK Hayes

I think pellet guns are col, so no anti-gun stuff from me. They are great way to teach kids how to shoot and let them play with something not so dealy. Maybe if we let them shoot pellet guns, they would not be interested in buying illegal handguns and such. vent their frustrations in other ways. but shooting someone in the chest from 10 feet? Sorry, we need anti-STUPID laws for that. sounds like bad breeding to me. TK

happened just the other day here, despite signs posted and such. Sad part is that we sold them the beer, Mistake on our part but they were there with friends and the friends were the ones buying the beer. They did not get to go, they were pissed, I make no exceptions no matter what. Not worth it. TK

Dell has a 17" laptop right now for under $1000, and a 12" notebook for less than $800. beware stuff on Ebay unless it is new, especially laptops and that the company has a telephone number and you can contact them directly. Check fdbk ratings as well. Big ticket items on ebay just mean you need to be more careful. Even bidding on something high priced usually means you will get solicited by crooks that have "the same thing you wnted" for half the price. They take your money and run. TK

Report says U.S. spy agencies were 'dead wrong' about Iraq
tkhayes replied to tkhayes's topic in Speakers Corner
A 'bunch of people' die every day in this world - seems to me that there are worse dictators, worse genocides, worse situations all over the globe that we do nothing about. Yet Iraq was somehow important? get real TK -
Report says U.S. spy agencies were 'dead wrong' about Iraq
tkhayes replied to tkhayes's topic in Speakers Corner
that's pretty convenient - we can all hide behind "hindsight" and therefore do whatever we feel is right at the time, regardless of how wrong we might be. how convenient. TK -
Report says U.S. spy agencies were 'dead wrong' about Iraq
tkhayes replied to tkhayes's topic in Speakers Corner
hmmm, if I get it 'wrong' and a bunch of people die, whatever it is, it becomes a criminal offense. Manslaughter, murder, or at least criminal negligence causing death. In the case of war, they call it war crimes. I would like you to stand in front of the families of the 1500+ dead US soldiers and say " Live with it - Move on" -
It's got nothing to do with take-it-or-leave it, we jump Strong systems, therefore we need Strong rated instructors. Truck driver job postings ask for truck drivers with commercial licenses. Same thing - not "take-it-or-leave-it." If they are RWS rated and not Strong rated, then they are no good to me, so do not bother to call unless you are willing to get the other rating. TK

Report says U.S. spy agencies were 'dead wrong' about Iraq
tkhayes replied to tkhayes's topic in Speakers Corner
http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/2005/03/31/usspies050331.html Only one of dozens of news stories on the latest report about US intelligence and the war, WMD's and pretty much everything else. So at the risk of starting the debate all over again - Just how many reports of no WMD's, faulty intelligence and 'running to war' are we supposed to read before someone says "Hey maybe we were wrong?" Gas is at the highest price ever, the middle east is anything but stable, we are still on 'yellow alerts' and the deficit is going to be trillions. Woo-hoo, where do I sign up? TK -
Anyone know where he is these days? TK

The federal judge just announced that they will NOT hear the case again, (20 minutes ago), so the feeding tube will NOT be put back in. Hmmm, let me see, that would be the 18th judge to hear the case....... Maybe her husband is right? Maybe we should all shut up and in a few days it will be over. Glad someone at the federal level has some common sense. TK

OK you are right, I do not know what you would do. Why does it have to be on paper? Does the law currently require that? No it does not. Do you respect the current laws? Apparently not Should it be a lesson to others? It may be the only good thing to come of it. But for now, there are NO requiremeents for ANYTHING to be written down. It was fought in the courts and LOST. Get over it. Terri does actually have a right to die (in this case). Instead of spending so much time trying to save her, why are the politicians not trying to find a better way to humanely end it? I am all for that, but I do not see that anywhere in the future. Pure hypocracy to fight this and some of the worst abuses of political power I have ever seen. Do we not have bigger fish to fry in this country? TK

absolute RUBBISH. He has moved on, of course he has - you would too. That does not mean that he cares any less for her or that he is leaving the repsonsibility for her. this WAS his wife at one time, someone he loved. Did you read his interview in the St. Pete Times the other day? Very informative. He waited a long time to make decisions because he too had hope of some recovery. After a few years, of course that hope faded and he faced the reality. Go read his side of it, and then put some context around the 'refused therapy' decisions you accuse him of. I doubt her wishes were NOT known for seven years. I expect they were well known within the family and doctor's cirlces, until it got to be a big public issue. Now you turn around and accuse him of waiting? Well of course he waited some time, he was hoping for some sort of recovery. Perhaps he IS moving on, that is another way of looking at it. Would you divorce your own mother if you were in the same position and she was in a brain dead state? No you would not. You would move on and you would continue your life and you would try everything you can to still grant your mother the wishes that she conveyed to you, whether she wrote them down or not. Right to life my ass. Now the President is involved - what a hypocrit - right to life? What about the right to life of the hundreds on death row what about the right to life of all the tens of thousands of dead Iraqis what about the 'sanctity of marriage'. They all seem to preach that when we talk about gay marriage, then ignore it when it comes to husband/wife making medical decisions for each other. COMPLETELY hypocritical and we need to stay out of it. sorry but wrong, he is absolutley the one to make the decisions, he is the husband, it is recognized by law AND religion to be the correct person to make the decision. over and over again. Politicians and people crying and holding candles are simply fogging the issue. TK

In case you have not read the stories and the news, he actually IS fulfilling her wishes as he knows them. He says she never wanted to live like that. Too bad most seem to want to see it in writing. Point is that the laws are ALREADY in place that deal with this situation. The spouse has the right to make medical decisions for the other, and that is what he is doing.. Everyone thinks he is cruel - anyone ever think that maybe he really cares about her and does not want her to live that way - especially if she made those views clear to him when they were married and she was still alive? She is brain dead - there is no hope, the doctors all agree. She will never recover. He has the right to make that decision for her. No one has the right to say those were not her wishes. Emotional tug strings here - but it is a tough decision. And he has every right to make it. This should never be in the government Congress or anywhere else for that matter. Decisions like this are made every single day in the USA, only they are not on the news...... TK

a lot of the newer power supplies are crap and they fail pretty regularly. Check the fans mostly, make sure you can see them and feel them turning. If they stop or seize, the power supply fries pretty quick. Also check AC adapters for other gear, your printer and such. Some have a habit of melting down.

define 'pleasure'. I used to hunt for pleasure - the pleasure of having a freezer full of moose and deer, ducks, rabbits and geese. that is pleasurable, but it serves a purpose as well. Did I 'need' to hunt for survival? Certainly not, I can buy it at the store, but I chose to get my food via my own means. It can be 'pleasure' and still be OK TK

Block hom ein Florida, Insurance companies do not like to insure framed homes from what I know. Even though they meet the standards on paper. Also termites are a real long-term issue. But block homes have crappy insulation. Pour lots in the attic, and try to get double insulated glass windows. Overall energy costs here not too bad overall. Closting costs: Question EVERYTHING they put in front of you and ask if that is mandatory or not. So much of it is included as 'normal', but you or the seller may also be able to decide if you want them, like the title insurance and such. TK

freefall instructor/student communication devices in helmets
tkhayes replied to AFFI's topic in Instructors
It was a quote, that is why I put it into quotes, I do not remember the author. I understand COMPLETELY that they are in a totally alien enviropnment. Therefore no matter what you introduce to them, including radios, hand signals or whatever; is also TOTALLY ALIEN to them, and one does not 'overload them' any more than the other. We could teach them any number of tasks to do, (including a set of freefall radio commands), they do not know the difference. Actually 5000' is NOT the time for decisive action. It is time for them to 'pull', for us to assist them and try to get them to pass the skydive. At our dropzone, 4000' is the minimum altitude and THAT would be the time for 'decisive action', if and only if you need it. And yes, it could be done with one word (pull), I was demonstrating the 'calmness' that you seem to think does not exist while in freefall. The student is freaked out. Your calm words will help to lower their blood pressure. I agree with your scenarios. But only as a exception, certainly not as the 'rule' Our students are no more freaked out than anyone else's. My staff go to great lengths to assist the student in passing the level. They give a pull signal, they grab their hand and try to assist their hand to the pilot chute. The assist with the pull when necessary. We already look students in the eyes, and while we cannot talk, a GREAT DEAL of communication goes on during every skydive. Do you really believe that if the student could hear our words on top of all that, that somehow they would 'overload' even more? How many students have come down from your jumps and told you that "thank God the radio worked" " I was SOOO glad to hear your voice when the parachute opened" that sort of thing happens every day. You are telling us that it would be a bad thing. TK
