So, this is the thanks i get for trying to help a newbie out? I'm writing this with a degree of reluctance as i personally don't feel i've done anything wrong but here i am having to justify my actions to a bunch of strangers, but heres the story as i'll set the record straight as the rumour seems to be that im taking on students which to some degree is correct but also far from the truth...
About a month ago a complete stranger PM'ed my asking for advice, he had previously posted a thread on the UK board asking for advice, 80 people viewed but no-one responded, which i can understand as he hadn't mentioned that he already has 6 jumps and not looking for someone to take him on his first jump.
My inital response was sorry mate, can't help you but a bunch of us are off to norway in the summer why don't you do the FJC there? But lack of funds meant that that wasn't possible, and there wasn't any jumpers in his area that i could introduce him too...
Speaking more to Grev i got the impression of a clued-up and intelligent guy with a VERY current logbook in skydiving (800 jumps in 3 years!) and 6 previous SL jumps from between 190-250ft that all went fine, so...
Instead of hearing about some newbie injuring himself doing some solo somewhere, i offered to take him my local tower for his first free-fall, i made it clear early on that i WAS NOT teaching him ANYTHING, i only have 105 jumps myself and no way confident on 'training' anybody, Gerv has worked as a (reserve) packer for a number of years and has over 8000 packjobs to his name, so if anything he'll be the one teaching me! The ONLY thing i gave advice on was on going hand-held...
Also the rumour is that we DID jump, which is not true either, we went to a 300ft+ tower 30 mins from (so that makes it MY local too surely?!) but the wind was approx 10-15 mph down the wire so i made the decision for us that we weren't going to jump this particular object, Gerv had travelled over 3 hours to come down so i decided to take him to another freestanding object, but also on this object the winds were howling and we climbed down, whos to say if Gerv was doing a solo and could of gone ahead with the jump anyway, but luckily i was there to explain about jumping in dodgy winds/down the wire winds...
Like i said, i can't believe this is the shit im getting for simply helping someone out, the problem seems to be not getting in contact with the 'locals' well id should also explain i was introduced to this object by a local with over 10 YEARS of BASE experience, so i feel confident in knowing the 'rules'...
Well i think thats about all i have to say on the subject i hope its cleared everything up, no doubt someone will still have a problem with some aspect but hey, thats their problem...
