I'm looking into starting a dropzone in the Southwest and wanted to see what others experiences were. The properties I am looking at, #1 a private FAA registered airport that the owner says he does not require insurance, we can base out of there, but he doesn't want us to land there due to "liability" concerns. The second option is a private airstrip, the land owner said we would need liability insurance before signing a lease. After all of my research, I've come to conclude that no liability insurance is available. So the question is, anyone who run a DZ off a private airfield/airstrip and how did you and the land owner (if you are leasing) come to a solution. Could you point me to DZ's that have this arrangement? Any info would be appreciated. Good to go. Error code 8999/8998 - Battery voltage is too low, would be displayed if there was a problem with the battery. http://www.cypres-usa.com/english_users.pdf Page 18, Cypres 1 users manual. "Once the switching on procedure is finished, the unit will run through its self-test. Initially the display will show the number 9999, and then a rapid countdown ending in 0. The countdown will take 29 seconds, and will be interrupted three times. There will be a three-second pause between the numbers 6900 and 5700. The number displayed at this pause will indicate the actual battery voltage (e.g. 6300 means 6.3 volts). The second and third pause will last approx. one second each, and will occur at 5000 and 100. These pauses are for technical reasons only and have no meaning to the user. The US Military is not teaching to breakaway after an entanglement situation and I woul dimagine that this foreign military unit does not teach this also. Probably a guys first jump and thought it was the right thing to do. It looks like he deployed his reserve, you can see the PC in the video, but I never saw a canopy until he released. For steerable rounds like these, the military is taught for both jumps to deploy their reserves in an entanglement that they cannot get out of. The most currect technology has a long bridle/pilotchute (much like a modernday throwout PC) and spring. As soon as you pull the reserve ripcord, the spring deploys the PC into the windstream, they don't teach to throw it out anymore (since you don't really have to) for the most part. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=JS27-xIHO04#! This has been going around Facebook and I had not seen it on here yet. Steerable rounds, entanglement, looks like the lower jumper deploys his reserve (looks like a PC in the wind), then breakaway at 500ft (scratch that, watched it again, that was way lower than 500! That was LOW) for an open canopy 30ft AGL! Nice camera work keeping him in frame all the way down! I do it out of habit because someone told me it was a good idea and made sense. It's not that much trouble to repack before the start of the day and it has worked out for me. Couldn't hurt right... How many rigs are sold in a year in the US? (non-military)
SEREJumper replied to MarcoP's topic in Gear and Rigging
Your going to get a wide variety of answers, although I don't think any TSO'd gear manufactures are working out of there garage with only 2 people. You will have extremes like Altico that makes the Dolphin is probably not going to sell as many harness/containers as Sunpath that makes the Javelin. Maybe someone with some inside info could give us a rough idea how many they sell per year... I've had 2 collapsible PC's sit at full extension for a few seconds then catch air and take off. Enough of a pause to make me look over my shoulder to see what was going on. They were not ragged out, and happened a couple hundred jumps apart. Not sure what it was, but they were definetely cocked. Made for an interesting bottom end on the jumps though! Tandem Instructor Requirements (by request)
SEREJumper replied to diablopilot's topic in Tandem Skydiving
Are these "problems" in the best interest of the student. As instructors, we should ALWAYS have the students best interest (safety) as the #1 priority no matter what the cost. When does a Tourist become a skydiver?
SEREJumper replied to Rogersmoke's topic in Safety and Training
IMO you aren't, maybe thats what the DZ told you to make you feel good about your tandem. Yes, you made a skydive, not a skydiver. If you only ride in a plane, would you say you are a pilot or passenger? To be a skydiver, one needs to have earned it, as in getting their "A" license IMO Back to the OP, a few questions if you can answer them: 1. How old are you? It can be hard for an older person to fit in with a younger crowd. 2. What is your nationality, where are you from, is English your second language? I agree that this doesn't matter as long as you have the personality, but it maybe a factor you are not thinking about (language barrier). You may want to call the manufacturer about the use of a specific supplier/ material before you buy it and send it to them. They may/may not accept it for use. We're not fucking flying airplanes are we, no we're flying a glorified kite with no power and it should be flown like one! - Stratostar

Experienced jumper as student
SEREJumper replied to SlackBeef's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Now this has been done in a tunnel environment with new instructor trainees (military). It is funny as hell and in a reletively safe environment (low winds). We're not fucking flying airplanes are we, no we're flying a glorified kite with no power and it should be flown like one! - Stratostar -
Here are a couple examples, the first is a release lanyard used on military equipment. The second is an example that you can use with gutted 550 suspension line, binding tape, ect. You want it to lay flat as possible. I just used cable as a reference. How to safely buy gear through classifieds?
SEREJumper replied to mike99982's topic in Gear and Rigging
Also specify it it is a jumping or non-jumping inspection and if there is any damage to the rig during the "demo", who will pay for it. I believe likestojump had a buyer jump a prospective rig and ended up cutting away. If the buyer doesn't buy it, then you have some costs that need to be paid as well as the $ lost now that the reserve has 1 or another ride on it. A far shot, but has happend. MC-4 is a 7 cell. An the early MT-1X (grey container) had a 5 cell reserve and 7 cell main. $4k is a bit high IMO, $1,200 on the high end, $400-$600 is normal from what I've seen. Beets, Thanks for the great post. I think it is good to have the guys that started early on at the DZ for many reasons as you stated. I also like talking to the older jumpers that were there when it was so new and I believe that it is a great thing for our sport and DZ's. Keep on jumping, telling your stories to those that will listen, and wish you many more jumps to come! Hope to jump with you one day. "Check out my GoPro footage of my first solo!"
SEREJumper replied to ntrprnr's topic in Safety and Training
I'm wondering are these/ this DZ making any extra money or charging extra for the cams on these jumps? I could see that "Hey, for only $20 more, we can put a camera on your helmet and you can show your friends the video". Student doesn't understand the risks and the DZ makes a profit. I could definitely see that happening. We're not fucking flying airplanes are we, no we're flying a glorified kite with no power and it should be flown like one! - Stratostar -

When did PD change their collapsible sliders?
SEREJumper replied to bootlegtrader's topic in Gear and Rigging
They did change the style on all canopies, I want to say around 2007-2008 (rough guess). The reason was that with the older style with the tabs, if the tab was not completely seated into the slider, the tab could get hung up on a cascade and cause a mal. Although highly unlikely, it has happened before. They also widened the draw string channel.
