Will you stop driving if....
jumpingjimmy replied to piisfish's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've not learnt how to pack, and i have no intention of learning at the moment. It costs £4 for a pack job at my DZ, i can afford that so i'll let others have the hassle of doing it. Basically i'm lazy and can't be bothered to do it myself -

name me one ! you really think a DZ owner is going to turn down my money just because of my point of view on people committing suicide? i think with the shitty weather in the Uk drop zone owners need all the money they can get why? i'm not sure what you're trying to say here? are you trying to say skydiving is not dangerous? i said it was.... you seem to be saying it's not have you got any facts to back up it stops people coming into the sport? or is that just your opinion? because you know what opinions are like don't you? too late dude, you already have been -

i dont think anything needs to be done in the UK to stop suicides in skydiving i say good luck to anybody who wants to kill themselves skydiving, i can't think of a better way to do it. Nice and quick and painless, why not? i believe that people should be allowed to kill themselves if they want to, the "we must stop them" attitude stinks in my book, the last thing i'd want if i'd decided to kill myself would be some do-gooder interfering with my actions what right has anybody else got to interfer with what another person wants to do, especially killing themselves!!! will people killing themselves effect skydiving? no of course not .... people need to get real and wake up. Everybody already knows it a dangerous activity, nobody is suddenly going to think "hey, i thought skydiving was safe until i just read that it's possible to commit suicide doing it" will suicides reduce the number of students comming into the sport? no of course not... again, everybody who takes up skydiving is ALREADY fully aware of what can happen, you're not going to be any more aware of the dangers by somebody killing themself doing it. You've already made up your mind you want to do it, and suicides in skydiving is not going to make you not do it. is suicides going to get skydiving more regulated by government? no of course not... when people commit suicide by putting their neck over a train line doesn't get the train industry more regulated does it!!! when people drive head first into brick walls doesn't get the car industry more regulated does it stop thinking that suicides will change anything, they won't... and stop trying to meddal in peoples decisions to kill themselves EDITED TO ADD... people should see suicide as a celebration in some ways... a celebration that the person who committs it is now free from his troubles, free from suffering. People should admire the grit and determination it took to make the final sacrifice and to have the balls to carry it through. -

Wing Loadings - who is over?
jumpingjimmy replied to jumpingjimmy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i'm always watching vids like this and thinking "i'll be able to do that" http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=guestpass&id=6qbqs i was told today that it isn't as easy as getting a few hundreds jumps under your belt and then running out and buying a vx89 or something -
Wing Loadings - who is over?
jumpingjimmy replied to jumpingjimmy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i asked somebody today what would happen if i got the flair uneven on a tiny eliptical canopy (not that i'm stupid enough to be under one of those) and he said that i'd probably need an ambulance guess things happen alot quicker than i imagined -

i'm beginning to see what people are saying on here, i think i need to calm down a little before i get hurt -
when i dive out, i'm a bit scared of flipping over, so i arch like crazy with my legs up my arse to stop this happening... when i just step out in to the relative wind, i know i'm not going to flip, so can afford to relax the arch just a little

i still think it would be just so perfect if you got your timing right and managed to half-volley kick a suicide bouncer over the club house -

so true.... reminds me of my father, he died quietly in his sleep, not screeming and shouting like the passengers on his bus -
Wing Loadings - who is over?
jumpingjimmy replied to jumpingjimmy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
how many jumps per year are there? and how many incidents per year are there? and how many people are jumping over the recommended wing loading.... stands to reason that the majority are jumping fine -
Wing Loadings - who is over?
jumpingjimmy replied to jumpingjimmy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
nope, not playing the fool at all i seriously think that wing loadings are too conservative. Yes, some people hurt themsleves from flying canopies loaded too aggresively, but i'm pretty sure they are the tiny minority you never hear of the people who load too high and never have any incidents -

sorry to hear of your friend i know the basics, like don't bury a toggle near to the ground or you'll turn too much and lose too much height, or sit with a toggle buried all the way down for any length of time and then suddenly let it back up.... as long as you're not stupid under canopy and just take it steady, you'll be fine. i know people can cut you off on landing, but if you've set yourself up in plenty of time and made sure you're ok then this really shouldn't happen. i always give myself plenty of room to land, i'd rather land in the middle of the airfield with nobody around than risk landing near the clubhouse around other jumpers -
Wing Loadings - who is over?
jumpingjimmy replied to jumpingjimmy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
some fair points but how much more difficult can it be to land a canopy that is say ? 50 square foot smaller than you're used to? it can't be that hard going from a 190 down to a 150, it's not like you're jumping from a 210 down to a 120 or anything. I genuinly think that there are some scare tacics in canopy sizeing. I'm pretty sure that once i get under my 190, it won't take me hundreds of jumps to get down to something that has a bit more zip around the sky. I'm not saying i think a 190 will be boring and slow, but it's not going to have the fun factor of a 170 or a 150 is it ? -

Phil owns the shop down there and is an instructor, i'm pretty sure he'd be qualified at rigging too -
Wing Loadings - who is over?
jumpingjimmy replied to jumpingjimmy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i see it a bit like this...... the manufacturers and people deeply connected with the sport give overly cautious wing loading advice to stave of the odd injury claim that is going to happen anyway bit like sell by dates on food, the food processors always give very conservative dates for food going past its sell by date to try and stop ALL food poisoning claims..... if they know most food of a certain type will be ok to eat by a certain date, why take a risk that the tiny minority will get ill by eating it on the very last day.... so they give a date that ALL the food of that type will be ok to eat canopy manufacturers give conservative wing loadings to try and stop the tiny few who will biff in a canopy no matter what size they have from making a claim/hurting themselves. not many people want to say the truth and actually say that generally you'll be fine to fly a higher wing loading than the manufacturer recommends for fear of the getting a verbal roasting from the people who are safety paramount types. thats why i'm genuinly curious as to how many people actually fly higher wing loadings than recommended by the establishment [edited for spelling] -

jumpingjimmy replied to jumpingjimmy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In light of somebody telling me that Americans place more importance on wing loadings than Europeans do, who on here is jumping a wing loading more than the BPA/USPA recommends for your jump number? and more importantly, why do you feel you don't need to listen to their advice? -
Sport Suicide - Discussion

i think people are wrong to say suicide is the cowards way out, to me, its quite the opposite. I'm sure it must take guts to face such a decision and to go through with it -
