  1. ............................................................................. or the canopy might just be low on the steering fluid ... ............................................................................. or one of his ass cheeks might be larger than the otherI'm so tired of AFF courses that neglect to teach the importance of measuring your ass cheek circumference before every jump. 2. Fly further away from cliffs unless you are ok with dying? Think this lesson's been covered this summer. Hopefully there will be no more recitations. Don't let the fact that I sound like I think that I know what I'm talking about fool you. I know that I don't know what I'm talking about

  4. I've flow all three when I was at varying skill levels. My knowledge is incomplete but I'd say that the Sabre2 is a little better than the Pilot and both are way better than the Safire2. I felt the Safire2 had a funny distribution of where you got your flare power in the stroke. It seemed like all of the flare came between 3/4 and full brakes. I've heard other people say something similar. I recall the Sabre2 being a little steeper and faster than the pilot with a bit more in the flare but I liked both. All three open softly. 5. If you're really that worried about your neck/back, you should think carefully about skydiving at all. Dacron lines might help, but skydiving is hard on your spine no matter what. When I was 23, with no history of back problems and in good physical shape, an unexplained hard opening DESTROYED my back - three herniations. I was in recovery for years. The canopy was a Pilot 188. Pilots are notorious for their very soft, long openings. Not trying to dissuade you. I kept jumping. I broke my back again on a bad landing. And I still jump. But don't kid yourself on the risks. 7. Forgive me for sounding flip, but how does one teach or evaluate judgment? I've certainly been wrong about people's judgment in the past, and I'd say even my own. I'd love to hear your input about things I can do to improve that. Don't let the fact that I sound like I think that I know what I'm talking about fool you. 8. Oh yea, reality of implementation is a whole other can of worms that, frankly, bores the hell out of me. :) Not that it's not worthwhile, but the problems there to me are fairly obvious; you mentioned a few and of course there are many others. What does the WS crest entail? Here I have only seen two kinds of WS training. A two jump method, where a couched tracking jump is made to mimic WSing, and then the student is put in a WS and off they go, and a one jump method that leaves out the tracking. 9. For many things in skydiving, jump numbers are used to determine whether a jumper is ready to explore a new discipline or add a level of complexity to their skydive. But I think it's a not too controversial thing to say that this is a far from perfect system. 200 jumps for flying a camera, as a random example. I think we've all seen both jumpers with far fewer than that who are heads up enough to fly cameras as well as jumpers with far more than that who make us a little nervous adding variables to the equation. So I was wondering what kind of alternatives people may have tried to come up with for various things? I've seen checklists for canopy progression and vertical flying progression (Though hardly universally adopted). And there are A licenses cards for proving the possession of the actual skills needed to safely jump with others. But what of other disciplines? What would a skill check for camera flying look like? Starting to WS? Some other discipline that I'm forgetting? Don't really have concrete ideas myself. Just wanted to see what other people might come up with. 11. Does anyone have experience painting a G3? Which combination of paints/primers work and/or don't work very well. Any other considerations, etc. Thanks! Don't let the fact that I sound like I think that I know what I'm talking about fool you. I know that I don't know what I'm talking about

  15. Let me tell you a story. In 2006 I started jumping. At 45 jumps I had a hard opening that severely injured my back. It was 3 years before I started jumping again. When I started jumping again, I was acting like an idiot. At the time I didn't know why. I couldn't land a parachute. i was maing stupid mistakes in free fall, etc. Finally I figured out that the reason was that I was on methadone for the back injury. this was only after I totally fucked a straightforward landing and broke my back for a second time. You may think 'what kidn of idiot jumps while they're high" but that's the thing, methadone doesn't get you high. I didn't feel high so i thought I was fine. I didn't realize my cognition was totally impaired. I was on benzos and various other narcotics before that and let me tell you, you do NOT want to skydive on them. They fuck up your judgment, no matter HOW you feel. I felt completely clear headed when I slammed in on my ass, and now I have a broken T3 vertebrae and a fucked up pubic symphysis. They make life a lot less fun than it should be. Don't jump. Period. You're going to hurt yourself. Don't let the fact that I sound like I think that I know what I'm talking about fool you. 17. Man, I've never used this website, but it's totally awesome and I',m not just posting this cause some friend of mine wants to jump the post. No sir, I wouldn't do something like that. 18. I didn't get to know Tom all that well in the few times I was up at Byron, but I always got the impression he was a great guy. I remember hacking with him a few times. I remember one of the first times we talked he made a crack at me and then the next time we talked he apologized for making fun of me when he hardly knew me. I was equally amused with both of those interactions. I'm sad I won't get to see him when I am finally able to come out there again to jump. Blue skies Tommy. 19. I just finished AFF so, while I may not be an expert, dealing with the fear is certainly fresh on my mind. There were a few things I did. First and most important, I think, is to accept it. One of the most common things I heard when I told people I was scared was "You're jumping out of an airplane. If you're not scared there's something wrong with you." You're going to be afraid. The fear is most likely one of the bigger reasons why skydiving is so much fun. The rest were just little things. Smile, it makes you feel better. You're going to be given a sequence of things to do. Go over it again and again to keep your mind occupied. One of the things they teach you to do is the check of threes. I think you're supposed to do it 3 or 4 times every jump. On my first few jumps I'm sure I did it about 20 times each. Just remember; youi're not going to die and the only way to stop being afraid of jumping out of airplanes is to go and jump out of airplanes! Hope that helps! Good luck and have fun! If you get out the door, you will! Stevie Don't let the fact that I sound like I think that I know what I'm talking about fool you. I know that I don't know what I'm talking about
  20. wow! Thanks to evryone for replying! Makes me really excited about the the sport and the area! Finishing AFF was awesome, and doing my first two solo dives... wow... 21. I'm in berkeley. According to the locator the closest to me is Byron. Really though distance doesn't matter to me. I'll wake up at 5 am if I have to. I just need it so I can get somewhere on a train/bus, one way or another. Don't let the fact that I sound like I think that I know what I'm talking about fool you. 22. Hi! I'm new to skydiving and thought I'd check out these forums. I did a tandem in ~ 2001 and then another one a few months ago (april 06). After spending the day/night at the DZ with my funjumper friend I decided it was something I wanted to be a part of. I'm a bit more than halfway through AFF and just moved to the Bay Area. I'm hoping to find some jumpers in the area and find out which would be the best place to finish up AFF. Hopefully there is somewhere that I can get to by public transportation or someone who is looking for a carpool buddy as I lack a car and odn't plan on getting one.
