  3. Hey All! I'll be heading to Oahu for a week of skydiving and play. Never been. Very excited to jump there. Who's been to that DZ? I may or may not be taking a rig - do they have rentals? Is it friendly? A tandem factory? Also - any ideas on where to hike, empty beaches, good margaritas, luau's would be appreciated! Otherwise...happy jumping! 8. At my early, early stage in this beautiful sport, I'm like a sponge soaking up all the details, thoughts, ideas, opinions, tips related to skydiving. What books do you guys suggest I read that would be useful? Informative? Helpful? Entertaining? I am looking for a few good books on skydiving to help me get through the weeks, while I'm daydreaming of my weekend jumps. Thank you - - - and ... enjoy the sky! 9. What more could I ask for - - - Skydiving, Beer, Desert stars...and an amazing cast of characters at this DZ. I'm there! There is not enough darkness in the World to extinguish the light of one small candle
  10. I took my ipod on a jump about a month ago. I had the perfect song chosen and was totally excited to try it out. I pushed play the second before I exited. It was disappointing. During freefall I couldn't hear a thing. Once I was safely under canopy I was fiddling with the ear piece and whatnot. It seems like there are songs that speak to you like skydiving does, but truly - the sound of the wind beating my ears, and the whistling of silence under canopy is just as rad. 2 cents delivered! 11. Quote> if a given main parachute is landing you safely and getting you back, there's really no reason to downsize. reply] I hadn't planned on downsizing for a while, as I'm a newbie and not trying to rush anything. However, the rental rig (the 210) I've been using blew up last weekend. Therefore, my only option for flying is a 230. Now, while I'm not trying to break records on downsizing, I'm also not trying to climb sizes, either. Yes, it does sound like pretty good advice to try on the other in-between sizes for a few jumps. 12. I have questions about downsizing! I've been flying a PD 210 for the past 30 jumps, and it has worked out fine for me. It's a bit large, but I've had some great landings while flying it. Recently, I met an ex-skydiver who offered his complete rig for me to jump until I find and purchase one. This could be several months, so the offer is amazing! I took the rig to the dz today to get the reserve repacked and the whole thing checked out by the Head Instructor. The new rig is a Sabre.1 150. That's quite a step down in size from the 210 I'm used to flying. My exit weight is about 155. My landings have been smooth. And, I realize the Sabre 1 is quite the hard opening. Now, with that being said, one instructor suggested I fly a 190 for a few, then a 170 and then give the new rig a whirl. Another instructor didn't agree completely. He didn't think this would be too much of a shok. Both instructors have flown with me for fun, as well as for training. What do y'all think? Landing, in my opinion, is the most dangerous part of the skydive. I'm willing to take my time, if it means saving myself any pain. However, I have nothing to compare it to, as my initial gear transition was barely noticeable. Though, I'm so anxious to put on the "new" rig and save myself some gear rental costs! Thoughts? 13. Becoming helplessly old before i'm financially prepared... ... and losing anyone in my family. Oh, and car accidents. Yikes! And not necessarily in that order. There is not enough darkness in the World to extinguish the light of one small candle

  15. I agree that the cost of the sport is a turn-off to any potential skydivers. I've taken up over 30 tandems to my home DZ, and of those 30+ only 4 took their AFF 1, and only 2 of those 4 returned to get their license. It costs about $3,000 to get an A license in California. The high cost of the sport keeps away those who aren't completely passionate about it. I like it that way. The circles are small, yet filled with passionate and dedicated people. The. End.
