Darwinian candidate AKA who the hell taght this guy ?
Blink replied to likestojump's topic in Safety and Training
It's funny that you pulled that up. I saw a similar ad by him a couple weeks ago. I sent him a reply to the ad, not with gear for sale, but with advice, recomending a 170 instead over a 150, and talking about the wingloadings. (1.17 - 170, and 1.33 - 150). Telling him to make sure he talks with his instructors before going out and buying anything, especially something like a 150. He replied, and told me that his instructor said he was fine to jump a 150. (Sounds like a real nice guy. ) Hope he does ok. -
Forgive my ignorance, but who is the manufacturer of the RAX?

[sarcasm]Yeah, sounds like a real nice guy![/sarcasm]

I saw a deal very similar to that on eBay (unfortunately it was too late). It consisted of: Micron (

What is weight limit at your DZ for Navigator 288?
Blink replied to rob223's topic in Gear and Rigging
Even so, he would still be under the 0.85 loading. For what it's worth, PD recommends 270lbs loading for Student on a Navigator 280. http://www.performancedesigns.com/products.asp?product=na Ultimately it's up to the DZO and ST&A. -
I am not sure what the legal age for driving is where you're located, but here it's sixteen. The gear I am currently jumping is a Javelin '93, and has over 1250 jumps. The rig is completely freefly friendly, and looks better than a lot of gear. Now I know it is only fifteen years old, but I am certain it's not going to degrade to a pile of unairworthy fabric within the next couple months. Old gear (relatively speaking), can be great, and usually had for cheap. The best thing to do if you're buying older gear, is to ask the right questions, and obviously have a rigger check it over (which should be done regardless of age). If you need help your instructors should be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

Alright, thanks for the information Rob, I did not know about the evolution of the "foreign gear" waivers, just the general idea. P.S. Sorry about the double negatives, I have terrible grammar.

I know there was an incident earlier this year, about a month ago or so, that a "pro" packer forgot to uncollapse someone slider, and as a result, the opening broke the jumpers neck. Just because he's packed many rigs before, doesn't make him immune to mistakes anymore than it does anyone else.

Is it not true that USPA allows foreighners to jump gear that is within the regulations of their association? Is it also no true to keep that TSO rating, whenever you change out parts, they must be from the manufacturer, whether it be nothing but a cut-away handle, or a reserve freebag? Would that not then equalize the availibility of parts?
-
Shh, last thing we need is anothe "BASE from Aircraft" thread. Thank though. The reason I was asking was because I ran into a website last night of a Russian gear manufacturer, Atmosphere. http://www.atmogear.com/ Look like great rigs at great prices, although they don't have a TSO, but I emailed them and he told me they are awaiting the JTSO (German TSO?).
-
Not sure if this should be posted here, or in Gear and Rigging but if it's wrong, I'm sure it'll get moved. Can anyone confirm that you don't need TSO'd gear if you're a Canadian citizen jumping in Canada? Thanks!

Sure have, but I've always had a fully functioning canopy by 2500'. I am not saying don't do balloon jumps, that woulds be hypocritical, and just plain mean, becaue they are a load of fun! But instead of waiting until 2200' to pull, knowing your canopy is going to snivel for ~1000' doesn't sound like fun to me. I'd ask the balloonist for 500' extra or just do a clear and pull. Let me ask you another question. What is your "hard deck"? In other words, at what point do you say, alright, enough fooling with these linetwists, this baglock, these broken lines, etc, and cut-away?
-
If it's not a preferable situation, why would you consider putting youself in that situation in the first place. It's just plane stupid to jump a balloon when you're pulling at 2200', and having a fully inflated canopy at 1300'. I'm not familiar with the USPA rules, but what are the minimum opening altitudes? Sit back, take a breath and calm down.

If he was doing a multiple revolution turn above 1000' for his swoop, he could activate his Cypres, causing a two-out, etc, etc.

Would you mention that you are a skydiver?
Blink replied to Superman32's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Absolutely, there's a difference between no disclosing, and telling them a lie. I never said anything about privacy? The person said they LIED about how they hurt themselfs, so I said honesty seems to be the better policy. Ofcourse, in his situation, it would be better to tell them "Sorry, it's none of your business." -

Wouldn't the real lesson here be honesty? -

Blink replied to Superman32's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Ok, I'll be honest, I haven't read the full thread, but I don't think this has been asked. Would you put skydiving work experience down on a resume? Such as JM, TI, AFFI, etc? -
As far as videos go, this one is without a doubt, one of the best, not to mention free! It was put together by PD, and not only does it tell you what steps to follow, but why you're doing it. http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=6886&string=packing

Maybe they should be trained on pull-out system instead, that way that PC would be rpped right out of there hand as soon as it hits the air.
-
Safer would be pulling higer. How do you feel about cutting away at 1000'?

I've completed Bill's "Downsize Checklist" now what?
Blink replied to doug925's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Don't forget: Safire 2 - Icarus Canopies Fusion - Precision Aerodynamics Both canopies are along the lines of what you're looking at. -

Blink replied to doug925's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
How about not jumping in winds that are out of your skill/equipment level? Sounds much better then downsizing so you can jump in high winds.
