Using a motorcycle helmet for skydiving?
Beer replied to FallloutboyDAoC's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I also highly doubt the visor will stay down, let alone on. the relative wind in free fall is far different than cruising down the road. I've had helmets that the visor flipped open looking back over my shoulder for traffic. Try riding down the highway and look up (do it relatively quickly and with no traffic of course) unless you have a high dollar helmet it will probably be flipping up on you. But if you had a high dollar helmet you probably wouldn't risk damaging it skydiving. Learn to be happy. You can't be there for anybody else in life if you can't learn to be there for yourself. -
Most tandems are never even given the opportunity to learn to skydive, it is never offered. They never thought of it, mostly because it is thought of as a one time thing. "Something I always had to try once before I died" kind of thing. It is presented and offered as a one time thing. Show up, watch a video, hang out and watch some people land, get put into a harness, quick briefing, go do the jump, land, high fives, here's your certificate, and they go home. Yeah they might see some fun jumpers packing from within their cage, but they are never exposed to jumpers other than their tandem master and in the plane. The only people I've ever had ask about the sport or the equipment are the older folks that came to watch family jump. They usually have some story about some silk rounds. Everyone else is there for the thrill ride. Yeah sure, you might ask if they'd come back and do it again, but they are most likely seeing it as coming back for a $200 roller coaster ride. Not to learn how to do it on their own. We aren't saying tandems aren't good for the sport. They do pay the bills (a few tandems in a turbine can pay for the load), they do introduce some people to the sport that never would have started otherwise. But look at how many tandems your DZ does on any given weekend. Now look at how many student your DZ has a year. It could be approached better to have a better retention rate. Now when you went for your first tandem, had it even crossed your mind that you could actually learn to jump and jump on your own? Or was it something crazy you had to do once before you died? I didn't do my first until after 140 something jumps and 7 years in the sport. I was scared as hell not being in control, well until the actual jump. I just kind of hung out there and it was windy. I never would have come back if I hadn't specifically seeked out training and was only allowed to do a tandem. I still get jittery today telling people about my first static line jump. 9 years later. There are tons of things I can't recall from today that I can recall about that first jump, and with such clarity. EDITED to add; none of which has anything to do about the original post of being told one thing by the DZO, then getting booted out by manifest. See what you started MamaJumps? Learn to be happy. Man you guys are killing me. It's taken a few days, but I made it thru. Ran late for more than a few things. I couldn't stop reading. Some really great story tellers here. I'd love to spend some time around the bonfire with some of you. Wish I could have been around for some of the scary times back then. I knew I was born a few decades to late, these stories confirm it. Still trying to find some rounds to jump actually. Just stopped jumping my Sweethog and Clipper a few months back for some new gear. No more flat packing. I know that stuff is high tech for some of you old timers, but everyone wants to puke seeing walk to the plane with that gear on. I'd love to hear some more stories. I'm kind of sad I've made it all the way thru this thread. Come on.... some of you stated that there were some stories for later..... well it's later. We're waiting not so patiently. Haven't you learned what happens when skydivers have nothing to do? It's like we're on a 4 day weather hold on a jump vacation. Last time that happened I tried kiting a 194 square foot canopy in 48 MPH(constant) winds. Yes there is video to prove it. There has to be more weather hold stories. Learn to be happy. You can just cut it away and reconnect the risers after the repack. Why waste a perfectly good pack job? Learn to be happy. You can't be there for anybody else in life if you can't learn to be there for yourself.

OK, so I searched but couldn't find what I was looking for. I'm having an issue with diving out of an Otter (all exits really, I'm used to a 206, but I'm getting better launching chunks). I seem to do this flip and turn thing when I dive out. I exit towards the tail but instead of diving towards the formation I'm pointing down the line of flight with the formation behind and well below me. What is the proper way to dive from an Otter? What am I possibly doing wrong (as if you could tell without video) Learn to be happy. You can't be there for anybody else in life if you can't learn to be there for yourself.

Maybe I should do that when he starts showing it to prospective renters. Keep a key and sneak back in with a tub of butter. You think sticks or tub? I think tub and a rag would be most efficient. OOOHHHHHH! Zep2000. Teflon based lubricant I use at work for chains and wire ropes. Slippery and sprayable. There we go, Pam and spray butter are options too (probably the only real use for sprayable butter) Oh, and I lied, he used water and windex Learn to be happy. Well unfortunately he bought it from Lowes, so I'm sure there will be no help there. Doug, there aren't even smoke detectors. He ripped them out of the ceiling when they started beeping because of low batteries. He is short and has anger issues. Learn to be happy. My roommate is laying black polished granite tile in the kitchen. He tried using a granite tile specific cleaner (it's blue didn't catch the name), but the tile just has this milky haze he can't get off. I thought I remembered something with vinegar, but I read no acidic cleaners. One site recommended ammonia without surfactants. Another site said no ammonia. The rest all were trying to sell a rediculously priced product. Any ideas? Learn to be happy. You can't be there for anybody else in life if you can't learn to be there for yourself.

I remember wanting at least 10 seconds of full flight before your flare point. This will give the canopy time to recover so you have full speed and normal flight for maximum power in the flare. It will keep you from surging or still have the canopy in a dive when you are wanting to flare. If you realize you started flaring to high, hold where you are, prepare for a PLF, and finish the flare a little faster when you get closer to the ground. You are going to loose a lot of your forward speed. Be sure to go over this with your instructors once you get back. They will be able to provide better input since they were actually there. Everything here is just speculation and personal experience with their own situation. Once you start getting a bit more comfortable on your pattern and landings, asking your instructors about flat turns might not be bad either. Learn to be happy. Do I recognize your picture from Skydive Chicagoland? I'm going to be back there in the middle of August. I've got some experience flat packing. I could probably show you better than explaining, if you don't mind waiting. Keep in mind I am in no way a rigger, packer, or coach. I just recently got a new canopy and changed my packing methods. Over 150 pack jobs flat packing. If you don't mind my asking, what are your limitations? Learn to be happy. You can't be there for anybody else in life if you can't learn to be there for yourself.

If you convert the oil into biodiesel (not to difficult of a process), the glycerine byproduct can be mixed with saw dust to make logs that will burn for a considerable time. Or it (the glycerine) can be made into soap or even composted. Plenty of info on journey to forever Learn to be happy. Squeeze your butt cheeks together. I was having issues trying to figure out the flat track myself. See how squeezing your butt cheeks together tilts your pelvis? Use that to help cup air. I found the bending at the waist was putting me head down. Point those toes and extend your legs as much as you can. Learn to be happy. I think I missed the 20 second window, but I do know of research being done to help people with severe Bi-polar and depression. People that really can't function. They map out their brains with MRI and compare it to "normal" brains. Then they install a device that fires electrical impulses to mimic normal brains. It corrects the disorder and the patients are able to lead normal lives. How's that? Good enough for you? Learn to be happy. journeytoforever.org Start making your own biofuels. Ethanol (apply for a permit) and biodiesel, which will not reduce the engine life. Actually biodiesel has better lubricating properties than the new low sulphur diesel (due to the lower sulphur content). Journey to forever actually has a lot of good information for becoming more self sufficient. Going back to the way we used to live. Learn to be happy. I like that. After my new canopy comes in (before next Wed I hope) and I start working on swooping I might have to make something like that. Learn to be happy. You can't be there for anybody else in life if you can't learn to be there for yourself.

You just didn't have one big enough. One guy I used to work with had a microwave in the back of the work van. Wasn't running that one off the cigarette lighter. I was pretty sure there was something skydiving related to Temple, that's why I asked here. But I don't think she'd be to big on jumping out of a plane, I may be wrong. I'll pass some of that on, thanks. Anything else? Learn to be happy. You can't be there for anybody else in life if you can't learn to be there for yourself.
