  1. I couldn't agree more on skimping on luggage. I've literally had bags that went to the trash after on use! Thanks for the reply.
  2. Sounds great! I'll be stopping in to check it out sometime in the next few weeks. thanks for the feedback!
  3. Thanks a lot for the feedback! I guess I'll have to check out both DZ's. I'll be up there this weekend looking at neighborhoods for a house. After that, I might have some questions for you about the area. thanks!
  4. So, as a new skydiver who has now collected a full set of gear (rig, helmet, suit, alti..), I'm interested in a way to store/transport it all in one organized package. I'm not interested in spending $200 on some italian made gear bag.. Anyone have a favorite or clever way of toting their gear around?? I'm thinking I might go peruse Walmart's sporting goods section..
  5. Yeah, skydive Tecumseh's website looks pretty cool! Thanks for the feedback. It's going to be sad leaving my home DZ though..
  6. Any DZ recommendations local to the Detroit area? I'll be living somewhere near Walled Lake. Any feedback from a Michiganer is much appreciated!
  7. Protec. They're ugly and don't provide much hearing protection (full of holes/vents) though.
  8. I noticed the same thing for my first ~50 jumps. Then someone recommended that I clear my ears immediately after opening (plug your nose and blow like a scuba diver). Since I've been doing that, the headaches are MUCH less noticable, if at all. Also, sometimes I clear my ears once during freefall, then again after opening. Good luck!
  9. Incidentally, I made my lowest exit yet yesterday. I was practicing accuracy and we exited a C182 at ~2100'. It was plenty high - I waited about 3 seconds and pulled and still had 1500' to deal with any issues. I actually thought it was especially exciting to get out that low.
  10. Excuse my ignorance, but who is Mr. Bill???
  11. Hi all, I'm considering trying to fabricate booties to attach to a pair of jeans.. Anyone ever tried/seen this? Any thoughts or ideas? I recently tried a jumpsuit with booties and really liked them. I thought it would be nice to have a jumpsuit with detachable booties in case a person wants to perform a freefly jump without changing clothes. I'm thinking that the booties could be attached with snaps, and the joint could be streamlined with velcro-ed fabric. Just brain storming.. In case you're wondering - I'm trying to save $$ for a ring for my girl, so I have cause to avoid buying a jumpsuit if possible... Plus, I always like a crafty project. laters
  12. These are true statements, but for completeness I add this: NOTAMs can be notifications of temporary flight/airspace restrictions. i.e., the president is coming to town for the day, and nobody is allowed to fly within 50 miles of where he is.. Incidentally, you are correct that NOTAMs are not required for jumping; they're just recommended by the FAA.
  13. That looks pretty good. I only want to insure myself for the total of my school loans so my parents don't get hammered if I go in. How much is a DAN membership? The policy is for members only as far as I can tell. Hey Doug, If these are federal student loans, the balance is waived if you die for any reason. I had the same thought a while back, but looked into it and found that it's not a concern. E
  14. From the outside it looked like I was standing on one leg, slowly and casually twirling two people over my head. Much as a superhero might do with a couple evil-doers shortly before depositing them in a dumpster. that's good stuff!
  15. I see. I was under the impression that what was being refered to as "penetration" was horizontal distance that could be achieved, not airspeed. If your forward airspeed was faster at a higher wing loading, but your descent rate was increased in the same proportions, then the reduced duration of flight due to the higher wing loading would result in slightly less distance covered across the ground for a fixed begining altitude, because of increased drag losses. Am I understanding this correctly? thanks!
  16. Rob, I need some newby clarification related to this comment; Does that mean that the "penetration" of a canopy is basically a function of the canopy itself, and not so much related to how heavily it's loaded (within reason of course)? thanks!
  17. Thanks for the replies fellas. I think I'll probably just jump it.
  18. Hey there, Is there a rule of thumb regarding repacking a main in a rig that's been sitting for a few weeks? My main was packed by the rigger who repacked my reserve about 3 weeks ago. I'm hoping to jump this weekend, and am wondering if I should repack the main myself before jumping? thanks!
  19. I buy that it's fine to just leave it on, but I'd like to know anyway, in case I ever travel with it. thanks
  20. Nothing happens if I push the button. The LED never comes on again. Is this unusual? thanks
  21. I got a second-hand cypress today, and turned it on to see if it appeared to work. Now I'm wondering how to switch one of these things off...? thanks!
  22. True, but at "my" airport, I do have to watch out for the other guys I work with performing aerobatics over the runway... Not being a smart-ass, it's just funny you should have said that, given I was dodging these guys the other day...
  23. I found that after about 10-15 jumps the anxiety on the plane ride up becomes a fun sort of anticipation. It really does get to be more and more fun as you get used to it, and learn to trust the equipment and training. Good luck!
  24. Many line twists due to a sloppy pack job. It looked like a streamer for a few seconds, and then stabilized as a very small canopy with about 10 twists in the line. I chopped it promptly, and the reserve came out like a charm! That was jump #21 for me, and I wasn't the one who packed the main...
