  1. If you are settling on an Oxygn (taking the other arguments into account) then do consider the A1. The only difference that I am aware of is that the audible is internally mounted on the A1 (which I have) and frankly given how much they cost, I think that that is a GOOD thing... Its not like I am looking at it once I put my helmet on anyway... *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  2. That's pretty much it right there. Its only when you get into the tunnel that you have every little positional error pointed out to you in spades. That's one reason why you learn quicker in the tunnel - the variable that is the other flier is taken out of the equation. So you can take it on board and start sharpening your skills... or you can just go back to flailing and relying on others... *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  3. Perhaps try this in the photo forum instead? I have never heard of that camera (not even sure if it is stills or video!) but someone there will know. You should probably also update your profile a bit to satisfy people there that you are suitable to be jumping cameras! *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  4. Do more than homework... test drive! Or demo anyway as everyone else has pointed out. People's viewpoints are completely subjective and no-one can help you with how you are going to feel about a particular canopy. Example? I ended up on a Safire2 relatively recently during a training camp (following a cutaway of a heatwave and waiting for a repack). Expected to like it after everything I had heard (Bigway for instance I know likes them) but I found both the 169 and 149 'slushy' and unresponsive with really poor flare (loaded up at about 1.35 on the 149) while the Sabre2 150 I put about 50 jumps on some time ago was much crisper although the openings sucked. I am not saying don't get a Safire2, just that it comes down to what YOU like, not anything anyone else can tell you... *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  5. From Bill Booth: "Again, if pillows are so bad, why are they used as cutaway handles on 99% of the rigs out there?" Although I designed the "soft pillow" handle for the 3-ring release in the first place, I won't get into the discussion (too much) about whether it makes a good reserve handle for freeflyers. Most decisions in skydiving are tradeoffs, and this is certainly one of them. However, I do think a pillow makes a better cutaway handle than a reserve handle, simply because, where the pillow is in a cutaway situation, is much different from where it is in a reserve pull situation. Think about it. In almost all situations where a cutaway is needed, you're hanging from your main risers, and your main lift web, where your cutaway pillow sits, is pulled up and away from your body, so your cutaway pillow is literally right in front of your nose. Now think of where your reserve handle is in a total malfunction. It's down below your armpit, tucked tightly against your body, maybe even UNDER the webbing, and more than a little bit hard to see, especially if you're wearing a full face helmet. Now think how much a reserve pillow handle feels like your harness, or a fold in your jumpsuit, especially if you're wearing gloves. Now picture yourself low, out of time, and in desperate need of a reserve handle that you can't see or feel. Aren't you glad you bought that Cypres?" I was sure that it was BB who also pointed out that in terms of accidentally 'activating' a handle prior to the canopy being out, there is very little pressure on the cutaway cable to keep it in place so if the cutaway pad was knocked out in freefall, it could (relatively) easily slide out, compared to a reserve handle/cable which has a constant force (the reserve loop) holding the pin in place whether you are in freefall or under canopy. *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  6. Canopy History: Spectre 170 Vision 150 Sabre2 150 Vision 132 Katana 120 Also some jumps on: Triathlon 175 & 160 Sabre2 170 Springo 160 Stiletto 150 Mamba 132 Mamba 117 My main canopy was a Vision from 300 jumps to 900 jumps (split between the 150 and the 132) and I serisouly considered staying with that to get the 117, but went with a Katana 120 for the added dive. I actually wanted the Mamba 117 but didn't want to wait for one to be built. Love the Aerodyne canopies and also the customer service (cheers Arnold!) The Vision 132 was the canopy that I started work on learning about canopy piloting with, and I reckon it was about perfect for the purpose. Lots of range on rears and toggles to get back from the long spots, Medium dive (between Stilletto and Katana) and I did not have any of the shutting down problems of one of the previous posters. There was little if any oversteer and one of the things I liked most about the canopy was it's predictability, it did exactly what I asked of it. Great canopy and I am pleased that Aerodyne are finally starting to make a fuss of it. Hope that helps. *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  7. Not from my experience. I think that the quality loss is in the capture phase from the original DV, rather than in the processing. I have used MM to process footage captured using pinnacle (long story as to why!) and the quality was much higher than a project completely done in MM from the same camera. I am in the same boat with an old training vid which I did a couple of years ago in MM and now want to include on a DVD with everything else done in premiere, but short of re-capturing there is no way I am aware of to 'up' the quality. *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  8. Very chilly, and not to say, noisy as well. It did make getting take off video easier though... *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  9. Next time... more imagination in your response to the scamming twat! Make some shit up... might as well get a laugh out of it. *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  10. I would have a chat with the CCI there (NLPC?) before buying anything as they will undoubtedly have an opinion, which may well be that you will not be allowed to jump a camera helmet with less than a C licence (even empty - because it would be so easy for you to just add the camera without anyone really noticing). And no, its not really all about the snags, its about the distractions... there are a couple of good posts on the subject. *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  11. Another one (yes I have emailed it to abuse@dz.com but HH is on holiday!) Presumably if you live in Aberdeen, your nearest dropzone is Skydive Perris Valley? Because of the recent interest in my canopy (I have three people looking at it at the moment) I have put the price up to £950 (UK Sterling) - is this still of interest to you? The parachute is in very good condition and has only ever been packed indoors on regular satin packing mats. It has the original QSTA type competition lines and I am happy to include the self-levelling sprocket bag (improving the openings) if this will help the sale go through. 12. We did, and I will enjoy it, thank you. You too may find that as you progress in the sport, the reasons that you started may not end up being the same as the reasons that you stay. You may also find that you stay for more than one reason / discipline... Maybe I should start worrying... but not this week. If the sport goes belly up in this country, I'll just have to spend more time at Empuriabrava instead. It's warmer there anyway and they have nicer planes. *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  13. He'll have to get membership of something, whether it is BPA, USPA or the Spanish equivalent. Only one of these will then allow him to jump in the UK on his return... As for travel insurance, which would be a wise idea, he should make sure that he has a European Health Insurance Card (replacement for E111) and ideally something which gives him 3rd party cover too. I went with etravelinsure who are pretty cheap and cover skydiving in some detail. HTH
  14. I went for the Tonfly Fuego Pro (single flat side and flat top, with cutaway but no box - optional extra). It arrived promptly, fits well, is very comfortable and look pretty good too! I would have to recommend them. You will pay a bit more than $300 I would have thought, due to the weak dollar. Mine was about £220, including VAT, delivery etc, which is about $440. YMMV for tax reasons. *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  15. It totally depends on the quality of your exits! Option (1) seems like a bit of a risk... You would on average almost certainly spend more time 'fixing afterwards' if you break straight out of the door. Also bear in mind that the camera needs to get a shot of that first point for you to score it. I would (within the limits of my own experience!) tend towards option (2). Definitely don't rush, but as your exits get better and more precise then also don't hang around in a perfectly stable 'hill' formation - get on to the next point. Its a progression thing, start slow and guarantee the exits, then pick up the pace and shorten the time spent in the exit point as your exits get better. The key thing (as the other thread mentioned) is to accept the differences of working on the hill, and not to try and flatten out too quickly, or the level issues will kill your average!! *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  16. WOW! That's a hell of an offer. You don't get industry interacting and caring like this in many areas of life... Nice one!
  17. This will vary greatly with different cameras. With an HC1/3/5/7, or the Sony CX7, you won't get more than 10%. And with the Sony PC series (105, 109 family) it will zoom in half way (approx). AFAIK the royal and way cool lenses are to all intents and purposes the same thing. *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.

  19. Perhaps you should go on a canopy control course and learn then... Actually, you can. That is what accuracy is all about and as any number of swoop jedis have posted on here, accuracy is a key precursor to successful swooping / canopy work. Good hijack though - I guess it IS all about you! *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  20. Not sure of your experience since some of the info you give suggests a lack of knowledge of 'modern' (square?) equipment. Perhaps your best bet would be to take it into Skydive San Diego and let someone in the gear or rigging shop/loft there take a look at it. *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  21. Just like jumping, books are great but nothing beats proper tuition... If you are still in the UK then most local colleges run evening classes on all sorts of subjects... including photography. I was lucky in getting a tutor who also happens to be one of the tandem vidiots from my DZ but in any event it is someone who can take you through the basics. Costs are normally low too.
  22. They are not the same. I'd say Slihouette and Merit. Not the same, but both perfectly good examples of canopies where ZP and F1-11 have been mated to give a canopy certain qualities. I think that this is the point being made. *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  23. You say trifling triteness, I believe more of a tantalising tease traced by tense timeserved critics... but I could be woefully wrong and wigged out... *************** Not one shred of evidence supports the theory that life is serious - look at the platypus.
  24. Having owned and jumped a HW for the last couple of years, I'm going to go for this one. As for I'm still with answer 'c' above, as pushing the nose in has led to some very funky openings on my previous Vision and the current Katana and is not recommended practice (by PD at any rate). Just make sure that the (well quartered) slider is slightly out over the nose. My HW by and large gives me lovely openings. HTH.
  25. The 20 jump thing surprised me - since he clearly loves skydiving so much, has plenty of cash and enough time on his hands to go making random TV programmes... Surely he has enough time and money to have made more than 20 jumps? Or maybe he is not that into the sport after all and is just trying to show off on national TV... Hmmmm. I just can't figure out which one it is...
