  1. yeah, I wish I knew that dz locator here has a google map integrated into it with several DZs on it, would save me the trouble of creating the other map :) I just did browse by region and the listing gives you map of only one DZ at a time, I guess I should have done my homework better :) Thanks for the link Dave, appreciate it!
  2. wow, sorry my bad, totally missed that one. I guess this thread can be closed :)
  3. Found only frappr map of members. I see several benefits to my map: 1) has DZs presented visually, which at least to me is more pleasing as I don't have to go and check out where the hell that address is (and I guess my problem here is that I am not from US so I am not that familiar with specific city locations, even in california) 2) you can enter DZs be long/alt or address, which I am not sure if frappr can do (just don't have any experience with frappr) 3) it is based on google maps that allows to switch map to satelite mode and study the aerial shot of the DZ. One of the reasons to create the map was that I've read a thread where a new jumper had troubles spotting the DZ and it made me thinking just how familiar I am with the area around Perris, where I jump.. This map let's me lookup the pics for other DZs too, as I sure will do some traveling once I get my A license but than again, I never insisted it will be useful to anyone buy me, just figured I'd share the idea
  4. first of all I'd like to thank both AggieDave and Sinister for the responses. second I am not sure whether to laugh or cry over the hommie's post... I have no clue who Hookitlow is and strongly suspect that hommie either IS hookitlow or has some serious issues with him.. or may be it was just a spam post and I should not even bother with it.. I did participate in a couple of discussions, but would hardly consider it a source of turbulence I'm sorry but I don't even have a canopy yet.. I guess that settles it. still open for suggestions. coaching advises are appreciated and I do plan to get some coaching soon, but with this thread I guess I was trying to see how much and what exactly one can learn on his own. Thanks!
  5. having 14 jumps worth of experience and being beyond the point of being broke I am looking for some free info on canopy control and more precisely on precision landing. Looking for pointers and advises as I rarely end up where I want to be, mostly overshooting but occasionally running short as well. I do realize that it should have been discussed here before, but first, English is not my native and second, being new to skydiving I am not sure what would be the most popular words related to the subject, so advises on keywords for search are also appreciated! Thanks for taking your time to read this and hope you'll spend just a bit extra typing in some words of wisdom in reply! Blue Skies!
  6. merkur, thanks for the info! seems a bit pricey at the moment and I didn't realize you need a chest strap in addition to wrist device for HR measurement. gravitysucks, sounds like a great read. willing to share?
  7. ok, back to the original topic of the thread.. I was wondering what's the cheapest setup for recording heart rate + altitude with logs downloadable to the computer? The threads that I've found so far have some recommendations on the models but don't mention whether the log feature is well implemented. I am at the beginning of my skydiving career and it would be fun to see how my HR dynamics changes over time :) Thanks!
  8. Thanks! Really appreciate you writing it all out for me! I guess my major concerns were just how much experienced divers would be to have a noob among them and how bad things can be with only noobs in the team (I'd think it's not like math where minus by minus will produce a plus ). Oh well, I've got quite a few jumps ahead of me to to think about it before I get there
  9. Not just there yet for the team jumps (still going through my AFF ) but was just wondering if it's better to be the only noob among experienced divers in the team or is it good enough to have at least one experienced diver in the team with the rest being noobs? I am going through AFF with two of my friends and it would be so cool to jump with them. So once we've got some experience under our belts will it be a good idea to stick together from the very beginning or to jump with more experienced people first? Thanks!
  10. go for tunnel! You'll learn sooo much. I went up to level 4 at which point I miserably failed going into slow spin. (I actually think I wouldn't let myself pass level 3 but it just happened ). Instructors suggested taking tunnel after level 3 but I wanted to see how far I can go without it. Anyway, I went for 7.5 minutes the first time, sharing 15 min with my friend, and it was bad... I could not control anything in there. Second time we went, each got 15min and man was it good. I could turn, I could stop, I could go back and forth, I could even control the "altitude" (or rather the rate of fall in the actual dive)! I was able to go precisely for the coach's arms when asked to, before I thought it's something that'd take me tons of time to learn. I learned to relax and feel the air pressure. I am sooo much more confident now! Well, with all that being said I am yet to test it in the actual dive :) Hope I won't forget what I've learned before my next chance to dive. Good luck!
  11. I always thought it the ratio of pushing the limits VS getting more skilled that gets you and it can happen in any sport. So for me as a noob it would be interesting to hear your guys opinion on whether accidents with experienced divers are more due to them pushing the limits or due to the simple fact that they jump more often?
  12. oh, man, that's a beauty.. but now that I started skydiving it looks like it'll be a while before I can afford a new bike keep the rubber side down man!
  13. that's awsome! Just what I needed to hear
  14. might be a dumb question but is there such a thing as skydiving season in SoCal? I do ride my mororcycle throughout the year, but when you go for some canyon riding it gets pretty cold up in the mountains, so I can imagine it gets real cold when you skydive. So when do you guys stop? or do you just put more clothes on? sorry, total noob to the sport and search did not produce any answers. Thanks!
  15. You have to do what you have to do :) Just passed level3 yesterday, beware :D If you are not going to be there today chances are you'll be pretty mad tomorrow.. adios!
  16. Hey man! bluiev.. ha, sounds like a Russian last name :D I knew you are lurking in the dark somewhere here.. Well, Ken and me just did it today, passed our level2 with flying colors... and my landing was even worse then the first time :( Keith told me the wind was picking up, that's why I was going pretty fast when landing.. well.. another one chews the dust.. :D Anyway, looks like we might be jumping Friday morning and then we definitely hope to be there on the weekend. Hope to see you there.
  17. Hi Guys! Just did my first jump on Sunday! 50 sec of free fall were the best moments of my life :) I am totally new to skydiving and I cannot wait till my level2 jump (hopefully on Wednesday). So I figured I'd go online, make some new friends in the industry, so... Hello everyone! :) also was just wondering if there are a lot of people from los angeles area here.. I jumped at Perris, so would be great to meet someone local :)
