  1. That is an absolutely valid point. It would almost be fun to make it an annual event for me to try and break the record... But what, in your opinions, would be a fair number to aim for? I mean, I hold an advanced advantage in that I have a network of balloonists, so what would be a fair/fun number to shoot for? While I could easily have 100 balloons to help me out, it won't be the same for somebody in say, Florida, where there are only a handful of balloons in the entire state. But yes, I do agree that having a complete blowout right away would be no fun in the long run. It would be interesting to see how people the "24-hour" period rule, which is one I have contemplated myself. Balloons can only take-off in the dark, and that is with additional training and strobes. They can't land until the sun comes up. I planned on picking up a "dawn patrol" pilot for the first jump... as soonas official sunrise time comes, the day begins.... not an original idea. But an important one for going for the max. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  2. Haha! Well.. maybe these plans will change.... As far as records go, I have done very little business with the FAI. My primary focus has been with Guinness because that will help me accomplish it easier, to be honest. Funding for propane and gas and everything else that will go into this, I think it will be much easier to lure in sponsors for it when they hear 'Guinness' over anything else. That is really my only motive to that. And you bring up an extremely valid point in the record variations. I suppose I should look into making this a bit more specific, and allow myself to hang on to the title a little longer? It could play in my favor. I had planned on having somebody with better planning and resources to smash my record fairly quickly. It's always been a goal of mine to say at some point in my life, I held a world record.... why not combine all the loves of my life? Although, now I really hope I can find a special shape to be included.... I can only hope to get a hamburger! It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  3. Can he provide any proof of it? I have been talking to the record book and they said they would need backed evidence. If so, I guess he would have to file the application in order for me to break it? As far as the background check has shown, there is no declared record for this... so this would be an aside to the record. Something along the lines of: "Most skydives from a balloon in one day, yadda yadda yadda. (although it is said that _____ completed 50 jumps in one day, this could not be confirmed). Hmm.... looks like something new to look in to It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  4. Those are all extremely impressive... thanks for the help! It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  5. Hey everybody, not sure if I used the correct search terms, but I have dug a bit with no luck... anyway, I am looking for some footage of wingsuiter's exiting the plane at high speeds, so they pop up above the plane. I saw one short clip and have been itchin' to see more since.... anyway, any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance! 6. I will, for sure! I am pretty confident in it... the team of pilots I have lined up is from a group in New Mexico (balloon capitol of the world--my home-state) called Top Gun. They specialize in rapid ascents/descents and have little fear of heavy distortion on the envelope. They are pretty amazing to watch, so I figured they would be the right guys for this job. The other factor playing on my side would be the desert... we found a huge span of desert that has enough road access to allow many crews to head many directions, as well as giving the pilots plenty of room for high-wind landings. (not that there is any shortage of desert there... this one just seems better?) It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  7. Well I already have 15 pilots and balloons who said they would be willing to do it throughout the day. (I am an ex-balloon pilot, so that was the easy part). We have done a mock-up of how it could work and I figure I could easily do 3 jumps an hour over the course of the day, planning on a couple hour break for mid-day winds. Starting to go through the process of this, and was looking for some old numbers for comparison.... It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  8. So, I inquired about this in January or so, but I never got an answer. I am trying to find out what the current record is for the number of balloon jumps made in one day. I am almost positive that it is not an established record as i can't find it anywhere, but I figure somebody out there must have done a few in a day, at least? 9. I love my R-1800. The only problem I have had with it was recently I was sent an incorrect cartridge (looked exactly the same) and when the printer doesn't have all it's cartridges, it refuses to work. I was missing the light cyan cartridge, and it still wouldn't let me print even grayscale stuff. Not a big deal... it was just an annoyance. Oh, and the (give or take) $120 to replace all the cartridges can be a bit irritating as well. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  10. Actually, upon review I think I have decided to be Bob Barker. He's my hero... I don't know why i never thought of it before... It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  11. Any funny ideas, past, present, future? Pictures would be a help, too.... I am strapped for ideas this year. Last year I was Dr. Pepper... I wore some black slacks, a white collard shirt and tie, a mask made from an old sock and shoe laces, rubber gloves, a stethoscope, and stapled pepper packets from burger king all over the shirt. It was a hit... It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  12. I have wanted to jump a WS for a long time. Borrowing tracking pants and such made me realize how much I would really love it. Recently I was out at the DZ and brought it up. We had one guy visiting our DZ who was a wingsuit instructor and said he would teach me and let me use the suit and everything for free, and when I agreed he sat me down for about 10 minutes and talked to me. I had never jumped with him, only met him once before and he didn't ask anybody else how well I flew. When he was told he had to take care of some other students, he put my rig in the WS gave me a 30 second briefing on it and said "enjoy." I didn't detect sarcasm. I spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how the hell to get my rig out of the wingsuit. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye

  14. I always secure it to the seatbelt. I nestle it in on the side of the bench in the king a, as I just use stock footage for take-off. In the cessna, I secure it to the seatbelt/pilots seat. I like having it out of the way as well as secure. First, because i don't want it rolling anywhere and causing unnecessary damage, but also because I hate the idea of a chest strap. I understand the concept of keeping everyone inside the plane safe in case of a crash.... but also, I would prefer to not have a face full of camera helmet in case a crash ever doers occur, regardless of how safe everybody else is. 15. Would it be safe to start shooting without AF at 50 photos if I take a camera control class? I would suggest you talk to your instructors first. If they think you are ready, then that is a risk you are going to have to take. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  16. If you are wanting to spoil yourself with fun/fast lenses my suggestion would be to surf around and find a used XT on sale. If you can find one for significantly less than an XTi, which you probably will, it is a great starter camera. The XT takes fantastic photographs. If you have an XT and buy the battery pack for it, you can not only have double the battery life (if you purchase another battery) but you will also have more weight for stability as well as the versatility on the controls like the higher-end Canons do. (additional adjustment button panel on the battery back... very handy!) By picking up a cheaper XT you will be able to afford more/better lenses (which if you are developing new camera skills, may not be such a good thing). But it would be a very economical way to enter the photography game aggressively. You can buy cheap now, and as you develop your skills and a style, you can upgrade to suit your own personal needs. A skilled photographer with an XT will out shoot an inexperienced person with a 1D Mark III any day. Practice! As your photograph numbers increase you will become more proficient in your camera skills. With some coaching, you will eventually be able to move up to a higher ISO loading, and before you know it, you'll be photographing the longest swoops with the highest clarity. A good general guideline is to have at least 200 photographs before shooting without AF. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  17. My understanding is the bulk and shape of the FTP makes it less desirable for freeflying (ran/quickness of motion). But like I pointed out, I am not an extremely proficient freeflyer and therefore not a very proficient freefly cameraman, I am simply going of what I have been told by other freefliers. I personally have had no problems with freefly video with my FTP, but I don't do very high-demand freeflying, so I am yet to take a personal stance. But even with what I have done, I would prefer my sidemount over my FTP. Once again, I am sure that relates back to my proficiency. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  18. I never said it wasn't a good helmet. And although I obviously don't have enough jumps in any discipline to say what would be the best, I am just pointing out that that is not the 'best' freefly setup. I am sure it works great for you as well as countless other people. I was just noting that a PC-Style camera mounted on top of an already dominantly tall helmet would not be as efficient of a choice as something a little more low-profile. The understanding that my experience yields is that filming freefly jumps with a sidemount pc-style setup is going to be much more efficient than a FTP with a PC-style setup. I meant no personal downplay or attacks... I was just going along with another "what's the perfect setup" thread... and in my opinion, a FTP with a PC-style camera is not the ideal freefly camera helmet. (For me). It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  19. ... all of them. Just to cover all the bases, really. Freefly helmet makes filming certain belly configurations much harder than it rightfully should. Likewise, A flat-top pro is nowhere near the ideal freefly camera. Therefore, the "best" freefall camcorder doesn't really exist. A pc-style camera mounts great to the side of a freefly camera helmet, but as a top mount it will stick out WAY more and therefore a more low-profile (height-wise) camera would be more appropriate. (whereas that camera would be horrific as a side-mount.) So yes. The 'perfect' camera is the one for your specific application. I know countless freefall videographers who have multiple cameras on multiple helmets. I think I speak for everyone when I say I wish there was a 'perfect' setup. Should would save a lot of hassle. and money. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  20. The plane I most enjoy physically jumping out of is a skyvan. Although king air/pac-750 have a great ride to altitude, so... I didn't vote It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye

  23. I got frustrated for a little while with opening issues... it's understandable. But with experience comes... experience. Once you learn to pack certain canopies to open the way YOU want them to, you get in a rhythm. I pack my canopy exactly the same every time, and rarely have issues. Line twists are frustrating. They are an annoyance, and at one point I was having them a lot and getting frustrated. But you realize where things could get better and worse and how to compose yourself... For example, it used to be throw-out, watch the horizon, blah blah blah... okay, it feels like it is twisting.... look up, and yes, line twists, damn... start kicking... But recently I began noticing I was fixing opening issues before they got out of hand. I noticed it when I did about 10 straight hop n pops. The subterminal openings put me in at least 1 linetwist every time, so I started manipulating the canopy on opening so by the time it fully inflated it as pointing where I wanted it to point, with no line twists. Just some experience coming in to play... it comes with time, and... experience. It sounds like you had your head in the right place. With your ability to check everything you did, try everything you did and remember everything you did, I would say you have the right mindset for this sport. It just sounds like you are having some bad luck. You didn't pack the knot... don't blame yourself for it. It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  24. Okay, I dug a bit deeper and may have come across something... I forgot to mention I am running OS X if that makes a large difference here. Apple sorta helped. I understand the dumbed-down paragraph, and get the general idea of the gibberish at the bottom. Perhaps this will help somebody with greater knowledge help me.... http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301534 It's all fun and until someone loses an eye... then it's just a game to find the eye
  25. I am stuck using our shitty dorm internet which pisses me off on a constant basis. I go to a college in Silicon Valley and my dorms are set up with low-end DSL. UGH. Anyway, my biggest peeve is they have something incredibly stupid set up, somewhere, I don't know. All I know is I can't use a third-party mail client, and that is an incredibly huge pain in the ass since I sent a LOT of emails every day, most including attachments, and using my web-based email doesn't allow for me to hit send and walk away. It needs to load....load....load..... then once it's done loading, I can send, instead of the other way around. So anyway, I have been in touch with people who understand servers more than me and they tell me I just need to route my mail client and web browser through a proxy server.... but I can't figure out how to do it with my mail client. Anybody know how to route my third-party mail client through a proxy server so I can save myself about an hour a day's worth of frustration?
