Like AggieDave sort of said, your probably not going to be able to convince her, as she is probably not going to be willing to get out of the irrational mindset. You might try asking her to go determine how dangerous skydiving is, and then compare that activity to other activities in your life. For instance, do you own a motorcycle? If yes, then dropping the motorcycle for skydiving ends up making your likely hood of dying lower. Good luck.

Anyone want a Skittle? I mean AFF rating?

Threat to Sabotage PAC750XL at MRVS

I also happily jumped out of a PAC on Saturday, and I plan on being back for that plane next weekend. -
A day at the DZ to remember!!

That sounds like a pretty cool 200th jump. It's a really good story also. -
So I'm working with Mark on some high altitude Ham radio work that we would like to do. More info on that here:http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3245705 We would like to do some work from 20k feet or more. That's class A airspace right(above 18k)? Does anybody have any experience doing things involving flying canopies in Class A airspace? I know that skydivers jump from Class A airspace periodically, but those jumpers aren't in that airspace for very long, even from 30k feet. Some of the high altitude balloon work must involve going into Class A airspace. Do the balloons require transponders? Radios? If this is going to involve paperwork or extra equipment. I'd like to know about it now. Thanks!

The guy who runs the gear store at my home DZ was running that movie on the screen he had in the store to create a sort of skydiving background noise. He was pretty happy when somebody asked to borrow the movie and it did not come back. I thought it had some funny bits. I forget what the plot was about, maybe because I didn't care. I was always thinking thing like, "it kind of looks like they frosted the mirrors on that skyvan." And, "I'm pretty sure I've never jumped out of that skyvan" Apparently it's rated a 5.2/10 on imdb http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111400/ I'd say that is a fair score.

I'll go.

Wow, great video. That's a very different looking flying style. Look at that camera on his head! That's a pretty big box coming off of his head. Thanks for that.

Wow, reading up on abrasive pleurodesis, it sounds rather unpleasant. Good to hear about your recovery, and return to skydiving. Anyhow, I agree with you on your points about doctors having different opinions.

I'm sure somebody of more experience will comment on the reliability aspect, but I think that the failure rate of rounds isn't higher than square reserves. Also, those rounds slam you into the ground so hard, I like my legs all not broken. I don't really know howto do a proper PLF like I would need to do on a round. Excellent question though.

altimeters-checked baggage or carry on?
piratemike replied to bigbearfng's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Unfortunately very often. The baggage handlers are underpaid and undersupervised. Stuff gets clipped all the time. They have even busted tons of TSA baggage screeners that are allowed to open every bag. I try to keep small and expensive things with me on carry-on. I've never had any friends get something lifted from a checked bag, even so, I try to keep my small and valuable things in my carry-on Didn't some royal get a bunch of diamonds taken from a checked bag in the 90's? I think the theft happened in new york. -
Do you ever smoke weed before jumping?
piratemike replied to surfbum5412's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No, I stopped smokin the stuff a while back, mostly because I feel totally useless for about a day and a half after. Pot doesn't seem to effect everybody the same was as me though. I know a few people that do it occasionally. -
Most places get a old rig that's not jump-able and use that. You might want to ask around for one, it would probably be really cheap or free. Good luck

altimeters-checked baggage or carry on?
piratemike replied to bigbearfng's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The electronic type altimeters might activate during flight. It won't damage anything, but it may help to run your batteries down. I turn off my electronic alti's when I fly, and I normally check my electronic alti. Carry them on, check them, whatever, it's upto you. If they find it at the security checkpoint, it's your altimeter, a fragile thing that you want to keep safe. I don't bring it up unless they ask about it. I find it rather interesting to take my analog alti with me in my carry-on. It's kind of neat to see the pressure change in the plane. They typically pressurize the planes I've flown on to about 5000 feet. -
Great quote there. I was wondering what had happened when I heard about this. I'm glad to hear your okay Q. Shawheasel- Prairie, and Belize 2010, Yeahhh!

This doesn't give any real information past what the title of this thread does. Here it is anyhow: From the associated press: NEW YORK (AP) — A US Airways plane has crashed into the Hudson River, sending passengers fleeing for safety in the frigid waters. New York City firefighters are responding to the crash. It was not immediately clear if there were injuries. Witness Barbara Sambriski, a researcher at The Associated Press, said, "I just thought, 'Why is it so low?' And, splash, it hit the water." http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jV9WYV6yQ3vPpmH9qhG6db-zhzqQD95NQ4QO1

Comfort aside, you need to be able to arch. If I make my chest strap "really, really...." tight, I can't arch all the way.

Although it's hard to diagnose with the "single thud" description, my vote is for a worn out CV joint. The most likely cause would be a broken boot. Look at the second picture in this link, the tear will be somewhere in the boot. Likely easy for you to see something like this yourself. Get a flashlight out and look under the front of the car. http://www.aa1car.com/library/cvjoint2.htm A way to diagnose that it's a bad CV joint. Goto a big, empty parking lot. Drive the car in a tight figure eight pattern at 5 mph or so. You should get some clunking(aka thud) noises while you are making the turns along the outside edge of the fig-8. If it does turn out to be a bad CV joint, you can safely drive on one of those for long periods of time, they just continue to make more noise. It wouldn't make the cost much more to repair when you have money and/or when it warms up. If it was a wheel bearing going bad, those normally make more of a grinding noise, usually when you are driving straight down the road, but sometimes only when you turn. This could be a break assembly coming undone. If that is what's going on, that can become dangerous. A loose break assembly will be a problem that will come and go along the journey like you are describing. Long story short, you should get this in to a shop fast. You need to find out what is wrong. Make sure you make it clear to the shop that you want them to call you before doing any repair work. You are just concerned that the car might be approaching unsafe. Expect $40-$150 for the diagnosis bill.

I like that quote. Mostly because I had about the same experience.

Falcon and Spectre for first canopy?
piratemike replied to FallloutboyDAoC's topic in Gear and Rigging
Although I do not know very much about the falcon, in general, ZP canopies fly different than f-111 canopies. For a short discussion on the differences between a 7-cell and a 9-cell, try this: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=156322;search_string=differences%207-cell%209-cell;#156322 I quite like the spectre canopies. They are quite fine canopies for your main. -
Jump Tickets, how high before you quit?
piratemike replied to CMiller's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've got to agree. There will likely be so many things going on in the future, I have no way to say. I voted no response. -
Wow, 30 euros. Today, that's about $36 bucks. About last June that was more like $45 for one jump. ouch.

Jumping in random places from freinds aircraft???
piratemike replied to sub1427's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
true or not, that sounds like a good fall-back strategy.
