How long did it take you to get your bachelor's degree?
denete replied to windcatcher's topic in The Bonfire
If you are going to go to school, go ahead and finish it. Don't just do the 2 year degree if you can do the 4. It is much harder to go back once "your life" becomes dependent on your career. Maybe avoiding a career would be a better suggestion. :) SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch) -

Oh..."the Ding". I thought you meant something like "the tap". I keep trying, but have only avoided "the tap" a handfull of times. I feel proud. SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)

It says Midland. I've lived in Georgia all of my life. When I was a kid, I went to Massachusetts to stay with family each summer. I figured out that I didn't want to sound like I was from the South (being a little kid is tough when thrown into a crowd full of kids from Mass.). So, I lost any Southern accent quickly and it never returned. - David SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)

5 years and a couple of summers. But, the second Bachelor's only took a couple of years. First one was in psychology. Second was music. Heck yes it was worth it...I'm currently unemployed but creative as crap. SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch) -

ATL peeps: Stay out of the Chatahoochee river today!!

Did you make sure to always "sink" your cans and bottles? We always brought a dingy with the cooler in it to tow behind the rafts. As the cooler would get emptied, some of the consumers would spend time in the dingy, so to speak. Forgive me, for I have fallen short of the high-brow movie crowd. I must confess. I watched and enjoyed Talladega Nights. But, I never sat through Bird on a Wire, or Tango and Cash...thank god. Maybe, if there's a load that has room, take a ride as an observer. Sit by the door. Work on spotting, sticking your head out the door, etc. Plan on coming back down with the plane, but spend time in the door area. Maybe you can desensitize yourself without worrying about having to actually do battle with the door. Do any of you know anything about this new audible? I assume it is from Parasport (it shares an open page with the Skytronic GFX in the new ParaGear catalog). The Parasport web site doesn't mention it. - David SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)

I searched the forums for information on Scott Miller's Essential Skills Course myself before deciding to attend. After reading how much people got out of the course (essentially, most absolutely loved it), I decided that it would be absolutely worth attending. Later, one of my AFF instructors said that she still uses some of the concepts from his essential skills course on each jump. - David ps: I said simplistic viewpoint, not sarcastic viewpoint. I'll PM you about your post, as it appears that you may be mis-reading my posts, or the wrong idea is coming across somehow. You may be able to help me be more clear in my future posts. Thanks. For what it is worth, many people who get to the point where they should "get the talk" in learning an advancement-based skill already know that they aren't advancing as they should be (especially with a program like the ISP laid out in front of them). If they didn't see it coming (the talk), I would be worried about their self-awareness. At the least you should hear something like "Do most students have to repeat their AFF-1 5 times"? Do most students ask you guys, "Hey, am I doing alright" during the course of their learning? Seriously, are you still in Georgia? It still isn't the hotest part of the year and it already sucks. I've lived here all my life and I hate two things...heat and humidity. Great, we've got plenty of both. Sheesh. SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)

Yes, I am a student, and yes I am going to give you my opinion. I have no problem whatsoever with an instructor telling me that I'm not cut out for skydiving, not yet ready to continue / advance, not responding to my EP reviews fast enough, etc. I want someone who knows the sport better than I do telling me if I'm in position to be able to save my life. Guess what, my ego is not so fragile that I'm going to have a bad reaction to this. If it were, I probably shouldn't be jumping solo anyhow. I don't want to be in the air when the student who isn't "getting it" puts my life in danger either. I am a teacher myself, and I do believe that I can teach just about anybody. But, I also belielve that every student has a point at which they max out. If one maxes out at being able to put on a jumpsuit, helmet, and goggles, then they are probably a tandem candidate. Sure, you can teach them by rote, but if you know that under stress they will freeze, you can bet that I will not be the person that says they are ready to go save their life. Please, let them have the experience of a lifetime (tandem) but don't put them in a position to kill me. I don't know about freefall (because I'm still having to think about my tasks), but I'll definitely tell you about my feelings on exit. I can still replay my first exit in my mind and my body goes through a mini-version of the feeling that I had at that moment. I really can't describe what it was like to let go of the plane. If I really tried, I would type sentence after sentence saying the same essential things. It was a moment where I found absolute peace and absolute terror. Your body freaks out for a second and your senses just go calm. It reminded me of the movie The Abyss, when Ed Harris has to inhale (drown himself in) a breathable liquid. His body tried to fight it no matter how much he knew it was alright. That feeling was possibly the best part of my first jump. - David SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)
