My friend has to adopt out his cat. I'm interested in having her. But...there are 3000 miles between us (almost). Is there anyone traveling from the Philly area to California that would be willing to transport her?

And another thing Quade...In the original article regarding Mr. Bear-talking-man, he was evaluated by a psychiatrist who considered his symptoms controlled with treatment. The judge took into consideration the direction of the psychiatrist. I know plenty of Bipolar patients who hold very high profile jobs making very high profile decisions and life and death decisions, when under treatment and taking their medications. I know many a surgeon with bipolar disorder, doing very well and delivering quality care to their patients, while in treatment.

Wrong. The constitution does not apply to only "sane" people. The constitution protects us all: Black, white, yellow, tall, small, married, divorced, gay, straight, diabetics, HIV, cardiovascular patients, smokers, drinkers, bipolar disordered people and schizophrenics. I am not comfortable with taking away someone's rights because he/she has a mental illness. While there have been times where I have had to admit someone involuntarily, or medicate them involuntarily, I have not done so simply because they are "insane." I can only take away those rights if they are "a danger to others, a danger to him/her self, or unable to provide the basic necessities of life such as food, clothing, shelter or capacity to make and understand health care decisions. One can be "crazy" but still understand his health care decisions, or be functional in society. I have had plenty of psychotic individuals, who have chosen not to take medications for their illness because of side-effects, etc and they have had legitimate concerns over long term side-effects. Just because my patient was hearing voices, did not mean that that patient was not capable of making decisions for himself. For Billvon and Quade, I suggest you read The Quiet Room by Lori Schiller and Amanda Bennett so that you can gain a little insight towards the life of a schizophrenic patient. Neither of you have any empathy nor any understanding of severe mental illnesses. Do yourself a favor and educate yourself. NAMI is another good resource for the two of you. I am appalled by your ignorance.

That's different from what Quade is saying. You are talking about someone who is violent. Yes, violent people should not have access to deadly weapons, whether or not they are mentally ill.

So, Dr., you have no problem with a person that is unable to tell the difference between reality and fantasy owning a gun? Seriously? You, sir, have NO understanding of mental illness. How many people have you met who have had a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder? I've met thousands. Perhaps you should have an understanding of the DSM-IV and those that have these illnesses before you start taking away their rights.

Quade, People with Anti-Social Personality Disorder, considered a characterological disorder, are more likely to commit violent crimes, including those with guns, than someone who has a severe mental disorder. Not all that are mentally ill are violent. And most do not commit crimes. And, you are more likely to commit a violent crime if you are depressed, than if you are schizophrenic. I don't know about other states, but in CA certain mental disorders will prevent someone from having a driver's license. Only if it prevents them from driving safely.

There are a bunch of people from the NYC metropolitan area that leave the city by 3 pm and stay until sunset during the week. You can camp in a tent on the weekends. It can still happen. A vasectomy has a one in 300 chance of failure. On my OB rotation, we had a woman in delivery, that had a tubal ligation 10 years earlier. Her second husband, had had a vas 10 years earlier. It can happen, unexpectedly. But thank goodness Jerry cancelled his appointment.

You know, I've been thinking. Shah complains that he can't meet women at work. He can't meet women where he lives. He can't meet women where he does yoga. He has very strict requirements regarding size, hair color, shape, occupation, etc when it comes to women. It is almost as if he is making it impossible for himself to meet a female. Could it be possible that Shah actually isn't attracted to the opposite sex at all? Maybe Shah is attracted to males, but hasn't accepted it yet?
