Retain more of what you learn jumping.....
rygon replied to JerseyShawn's topic in Safety and Training
Also you will find that you will be mentally and physically tired after a few jumps per day. You will lose the ability to learn as much like this. Also dont try and leave it to the last weekend before your currancy runs out. What happens if its too windy/cloudy for you to jump?) -
sayng AADs make people less likely to look after themselves is stupid. Does wearing a seatbelt make you a reckless driver? I have an AAD as I dont know what will go wrong in a skydive. Ive trained for a lot of eventualities, thought of loads of scenarios but theres some that no matter what you do you may not be able to open your reserve, having something that MAY open it is much better than having nothing IMHO

I weigh just over 150lbs without gear and was slowish to downsize (280, 240, 220, 210,190 until jump 90ish then on a 170) jumped that for 80jumps or so before going to a 150. At the same time as buying a 150 I did brian vachers safe canopy school on a 170 .. and hell I made that thing fly like ive never been able to before. Id recommend getting a 170 and getting yourself on this course (or something similar) and learn how to fly the canopy properly and you defo wont be bored of your canopy for quite a while

no, its something that will save your life, seeing it(and getting it chacked by a trusted person ie a rigger) before you buy it is a must.

nice post johnRich. I liked that a lot, maybe be worth posting under the safety tab?

Its to make sure your freezer doesnt get too warm if you put hot food in it. Also the hot cooling down quicker/more is a myth. Still needs to take away the energy More energy = more effort Personally freezing food asap has never bothered me. Had curries out for 2-3days, froze them and had no ill effects eating them afterwards

with only 120jumps (50 with audible) im loving the optima. I bought it as it gives me 3 warnings in freefall, 3 under canopy. L&b have an amazing reputation. Never had to call them myself but im sure if you search for them you will see how good they are (broken ones replaced for new ones etc). Personally it would be nice to know how fast i fall but not essential..plus if i find out how fast i jump...will i need to now that info again. Doing fs and trying to get into ff not yet i reckon

self-induced line twists at low wing loadings?
rygon replied to pchapman's topic in Safety and Training
I managed a start of a twist on a 190 (1/4 twist or something). did a right turn, lifted off the toggle and then pulled it down again ...think as a was penduluming back it took the tension off the lines which caused it to happen -
with just coming off my AFF, i was taught track off at 5k...pull @ 3.5k ...depending how good your track is depends on how long this will take. final approach ...start at 1k 1st turn @ 500ft second @ 300ft

its not only the legs either...if your arms are asymetrical or even if your body is not straight it can induce turns...its a totally alien environment so will take soe geting used to

Should basic first aid be a requirement for the A
rygon replied to Tuna-Salad's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
not all people are comfortable doing 1st aid..i know of at least 2 ppl who would faint at the sight of blood, why should they go through the course knowing full well they wouldnt be comfortable helping someone, just to get their A license. Having a course for ppl to attend if they wish would be the best bet. -
what happens if you are entangled in your main canopy?? Ive been taught to keep on trying to get rid of an entanglement before cutting away and getting the reserve out. I think i would want as long as possible to try and clear it before the reserve opens, even if that means relying on an AAD

yeah i found that if you go to a proper martial artsd centre you will learn the lesson that it is just for self defence. These places where you can pick up a black belt within 2 years (many of them whom are under the age of 10) are there just for the money and there own egos. I went to one and it was basically the intructer showing how hard and fast he could kick/punch etc, and this was the lesson most of him students were learning from. My new place is more about getting the most out of yourself and working with each other

The way i see it is that your kid has done the right thing..he has walked away and told the teacher (via you). Now that teacher has not done anything except told him to tell a teacher again shows they have no control over the situation. Definately file a complaint against the school for not handleing it properly, and maybe the police. Also make a diary when you have spokent to the school/teachers and if possible get the to sign it. This way if your kid has to defend himself it will show that you and him have done all you could to stop this bullying peacefully. Martial arts is a great way of going about it as it will prepare your kid physically and mentally whilst keeping him fit. I go kickboxing which i find great as i can and have used it against others (normally groups as they dont like fighting on their own) ...got punched a few times but have come out of it alive and still pretty good. Martial arts also shows me when i should fight or when i should run. look into MMA, BJJ, wrestling, kickboxing, and boxing (try http://subfighter.com for some info) Also make sure your kid knows that if he is going to hit someone then make sure he does a good job of it...a single punch is most probably going to infuriate the opponent...get him on his arse unable to fight back then it shows everyone that the bully has lost

I think the way you still try and skydive, even though you fear it quite a bit, shows that you arent doing it for the coolness factor of telling others that you skydive (although as said..it sounds pretty good) and im sure you will eventually do another jump..then you will be so buzzed that you will wat to jump again straight afterwards. Ive only done 12 jumps and my 2nd was my most fearful ...i was bricking it on the way to the dz...waiting to jump and even in the plane...got to the door and i went into automatic, just wanted to get it over and done with. It went great and i am now doing my level 7 (again...due to having no jumps in 2.5mnths) ...I feel ok about it but everyso often i still get nervous just thinking about my next jump...then i go through it all in detail with every eventuality (aircraft emergency, loosing the instructors, every type of mal..how to spot them and deal with them, plus the canopy ride down etc) thats where i realise i know it off by heart and that if something did happen then at least i know it well...that makes me at ease (plus the breathing slowly on the plane) may be worth getting your instructor to go through a kit check with you if you havent already done one before
-
when did my 1st ever 90deg turn it was shite...it went everywhere..week later i did exactly the same stuff and it worked perfect...dont know why (cept the feed back from my insructors was good) and once i could turn i couldnt believe how easy it was...stick at it and im sure you will achieve the turns very soon

Listening To Music While Skydiving!
rygon replied to Skyhighbird's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I can listen to music virtually anywhere at anytime i want..so why the need to listen to it whilst freefalling..im sure ppl can go without music for those few seconds. I enjoy listening to the sound of the wind rushing by. If you are having trouble concentrating im guessing that its more to do with your body try to cope in the hostile environment...it isnt used to it yet...give it time and you should adjust to the aspect of freefall and cope better (thats what happened to me after my 5th or so jump...not all the way there yet but much more comfortable) -
its fucking freezing...waiting a few mnths aint going to make any difference. If you can, get a chance to jump with an instructor...you may think you can jump again ok but having someone else there will give you peace of mind
-
I thought the whole point of googlewhack was to use 2 real words (ie defined in the dictionary)
-
I think if you pull both handles then its clear in your head. whereas if your line of thought was "the reserve handle doesnt need to be pulled if the reserve is out" then I reckon subconciously you will be waiting that little bit longer to see if the reserve is out before pulling the silver handle

I was taught to PLF with feet (and knees) tightly together... and I'm sure I'm not the only jumper who has PLF'd landings because at the time I only had "one good leg"... so was I. Knees together and bent, pointing slightly to one side (at around 50ft) hold it there. When you land this atoumatically removes a lot of the energy into you legs (acting as shock absorbers due to the bent knees) and by having the legs to the side a bit , it allows you to roll onto the side of you body
-
technically its piss easy but that doesnt mean anyone can do it. I do kickboxing and my 1st ever jump AFF lvl1 i was scared shitless but once out of the plane i took a deep breath and relaxed..bit like yoga/tai chi....its not what you do physically but mentally what helps. If youre up for it go and see what happens...if your in that plne youve got over the biggest obstcle already...afte3r that chill out, relax and have fun
