  2. Having rented gear for 60 plus jumps now I have a bit of experience on different canopies while not being an expert. I can relate what works for me most of which has been mentioned here. One thing I would add though: "the magic spot" or "accuracy trick" Perhaps you have heard this term before? Its a trick to figure out just how far you will get at your current manner of flight. I first read about after AFF level 3 and have used every jump since. It's explained in the following article by John Leblanc.... The accuracy trick defined: Find the point on the ground that doesn't move. 1. Choose a point on the ground in front of you. If it seems to move towards you (the angle gets steeper in your field of vision), then you will fly past that point. If the point seems to move up or away (the angle to the point gets flatter in your field of vision), then you won't make it that far, unless something changes. If you keep looking between these two points, you will find one point on the ground that does not appear to move in your field of vision at all. (The visual angle doesn't change.) I call that point the "special point" that doesn't move. The visual angle to all other points on the ground seem to move outward from this point as you travel towards it. 2. If the winds never changed, and you never moved your toggles, you would end up crashing into the ground right on that special point! If the winds do change, you can tell right away because the special point that wasn't moving will start to move as soon as the winds change. That means there is a new point that doesn't move. A new special point replaces the old one. That special point will also start to move if you change your toggle position. Kwak Sometimes your the bug, sometimes your the windshield. 3. I have to say I have a shmeful amount of hours logged in Strip clubs. Not cuz I'm a pervert more so that I spent several years as a "Provert" . I worked in the clubs for several years and still drop by to see old friends on occasion. It's funny the girls that hated me when i worked there practically rape me when i see them now. The only thing I miss about the job is the $ and hours, both were perfect for a skydiver. kwak Sometimes your the bug, sometimes your the windshield. 5. I flew out there in April to ski from Atlanta. Everyone else was crying about prices direct to Steamboat and wanted a shuttle for $100+++. I did more research and found cheap tix direct into Steamboat. They key is flying at the right time (day of week) and airline (United/delta/UsAir). The resorts out west subsidize flights by the airlines to bring in guest. Try looking on the Steamboat website they actually post a tentative "schedule" of flights. Just keep checkin prices on the web and don't buy too EARLY, usually fares wil remian low as late as 2-3 weeks before departure time. kwak Sometimes your the bug, sometimes your the windshield. 10. Yes the affordability factor is a HUGE one. Unfortunately buying used in the case of a Cypres is not always such a good deal. Heck ther down to $900 (even less someplaces). People are still trying to drag in $750 for a 4+ yr old Cypres. I nderstand when they bought it it was $1200, but why not spend a $150 more for new? kwak Sometimes your the bug, sometimes your the windshield. Sometimes your the hammer sometimes your the nail. 11. AS usual Billvon has insight for us all. I have decided that I would jump w/o the cypres, but on a regular basis I would like to have it. If no other reason thatn this::: It's kinda like a thing that happened back in highschool... I'm on my way out to a party on friday night and mom asks "Are you gonna be drinking tonight?" "of course not mom you know me I'm cool" Well it was pretty shitty when she had to come bail my drunkass out at 5am. Yes I know my capabilities and am aware of the dangers I face on every jump. Unfortunately whuffo loved ones don't always have such an understanding. I am lucky that most people I care about support my skydiving. If some need a lil comforting (ie me using a cypres) to swallow it then why not? I do believe that is alot to ask of a whuffo to feel totally at ease about your jumping much less support it. Yes I am an adult, yes the financial responsibility is mine, heck all responsibility is mine. I also realize there are just as many skydivers who cannot even begin to understand my reasoning and I am fine with that. There expertise and opinions do nothing but further educate me about safety in the sport we all love. kwak Sometimes your the bug, sometimes your the windshield. 12. Yes, My rigger's loft is at a major Dropzone. I also provided the seller with the link to his very detailed and complete website. I also had the $$$ in my rigger's hands before he was even contacted by the seller. I even went so far as to get money orders instead of personal check. I see where the COD option is good for a seller, but from a former shipping and receiving guy here I also know it's not good for the buyer. Fedex n UPS want a signature and payment BEFORE you can even open the box. I didn't wanna pay for a box of rocks. kwak Sometimes your the bug, sometimes your the windshield. 13. Well as promised I am back to fill everyone in on my online gear purchase..... As of this past Friday the deal was all set I give my Rigger the $$$ the seller calls onday to verify he has it and then ships. Upon inspection by my rigger funds to be sent to the seller, deal is done. Well almost Turns out the seller seems to really not want the rig inspected in fact he seems very flakey. Afeter the 3 hour round trip in the rain to drop the $$$ w/ my rigger I was kind pissed. The guy emailed me Tuesday tosay he is not "comfortable" with sending the gear to my rigger. In fact the only options he offered left me taking all the risk. No opportunity for inspection, hell he wnted to send it cod so I would have to pay FedEx before I could even open the damn box! I am disappointed , but will continue my search. I am curious if I should somehow alert others that perhaps this is a possible scam? Who knows I could be worng perhaps he is just a skeptical flake, but I would hate to know someone else got burned on this deal. Wish me luck as "the search" is on again. kwak Sometimes your the bug, sometimes your the windshield. Sometimes your the hammer sometimes your the nail. 16. Interesting angle Phree. I guess it's just that I have tried to ease some reservations of loved ones by agreeing to buy and use a cypres. I do NOT trust my life to a cypres at anytime when I jump. In the same respect that I don't trust the airbag in my truck to save me when I drive. I guess I just see it as an available safety measure and I feel the need to take all of those available for every jump. I would hate "just this once" to be famous last words of a lil known skydiver. If it's not apparent I REALLY DO want to jump without it. I ma just trying my damndest to talk my self out of it. kwak Sometimes your the bug, sometimes your the windshield. 17. but don't be skeered to jump without it. *** Umm yeah I suppose so. I have confidence in me and my abilities etc. Just that Cypres is there for the "unexpected". 18. i had line twists from the slider at the top of the canopy to my risers, my toggles and all were twisted up, it had my ring finger lodged in between them (glad i was wearing gloves) This just made me think of something. Do most people remove rings from their fingers when jumping? I don't where any so the thought had never occured to me. Having been in and around Industrila/construction sites for awhile I knowthe importance of naked fingers. Rings can and do very easily snag many times resulting in severed digitsOUCH! I know of at least 2 men who have no ring finger left from the knuckle up. Damn what a price to pay for being married!! kwak Sometimes your the bug, sometimes your the windshield. 19. I kow the whole Cypres debate has been beaten to death and that is not what this about. I FULLY believe in the value of a Cypres. My question is about maybe just one jump without?? I am awaiting the arrival of a used rig I am trying to buy. MY rigger should receive it later in the week. It's a container, main and reserve, but NO cypres. It will be inspected and available for me to try on and possibly jump before the deal is final. Thank largely to advice harvested here
  20. Hmm... Jump#8 bought goggles, #10 Atli and gloves, #20 Used Merlin RW suit. #61 (currently) and I am anxiously awaiting the close of a deal on a rig I found right here on DZ.com classifieds. Reflex, Sabre150, Tempo150 all I need now is a Cypres! kwak Sometimes your the bug, sometimes your the windshield. Sometimes your the hammer sometimes your the nail. Excellent news

I personally wouldn't hold my breath on anything this being far from the first time such a deal or "promise" was made. The White House may have said most clearly; ''a tactical step by Iraq in hopes of avoiding strong U.N. Security Council action.'' adding "As such, it is a tactic that will fail,'' "This is not a matter of inspections. It is about disarmament of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and the Iraqi regime's compliance with all other Security Council resolutions,'' McClellan said in Washington. Saddam has pulled this very same thing before and patience for such lame attempts to stall has gone out the window. The bombs will fly when is the only question. kwak Sometimes your the bug, sometimes your the windshield. Sometimes your the hammer sometimes your the nail.
