  1. I think this is in the eye of the beholder. the conservatives see more liberals, and vice versa. polls you see might lean liberal, but those don't require actual *posting*. I think of the people who actually post and get involved in debates on here, more are conservative than liberal. Meaning, the Conservatives are a loud minority, while the liberals are a silent majority. Leading to skewed perceptions on both sides. 2. I have an engineering degree. Not entirely sure I'd want to immigrate to America right now. Way too much stupidity and the lionization thereof. Show me a country where it's celebrated to be educated and intelligent, where people have reasoned, informed debates with OPEN MINDS, where facts aren't ignored out of convenience, that's where I want to live. I don't know what's happened here, but sometime during the last decade, the idiots have taken over our society (notice I didn't say government). Anyone following the Miss USA "controversy"? People are upset because the daughter of immigrants won. Not just any immigrants... MUSLIM immigrants! *gasp* She MUST be a terrorist! heaven for-fucking-bid that an american who doesn't have blonde hair and blue eyes win a pageant. Fear of what's different can lead countries down some very dark and dangerous paths. Godwin's Law be damned, just ask Anne Frank... 3. No. See, there's the OTHER part of the 14th that prevents some very sticky situations, like...oh...yanno...civil war... Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

  5. mark, what they are saying and you are ignoring is this: There is currently NO WAY for them to leave and apply to be here legally if they want to work in a chicken plant or pick lettuce. NO POSSIBLE LEGAL WAY. NO POSSIBLE WAY. Now. Really stop and think about what you are saying over and over. The trouble with the tea party rabid anti-illegal crowd is that they just don't bother to either A) consider facts, and B) think about the true consequences of the things they scream for. 6. to bad they are laying there without work because the illegals got there job Really? Not because they are often lazy fucks and wouldn't lower themselves to do the jobs that the 'others' are willing to do? or maybe because the jobs do not pay well because they employer does not have to pay a legal wage because of the illegals working for less than min wage. So why, then, are we punishing the illegals, when a far EASIER and less costly solution would be to enforce laws already in place that regulate EMPLOYERS in this country? I thought you conservatives were all big on less government, and enforcing existing laws. Oh, I know the answer. Because it's easier to pick out the brown folks and persecute them, rather than "pick on" hard-working american business owners, right? We all know what would happen if we actually addressed the source of the problem. Offices in the capitol would be flooded with angry letters and calls from people who are outraged at having to pay $40/person for a meal at Applebee's or $5 for a head of lettuce...probably the same people who are now flooding those same offices with cries of "kick them out!" 7. USAF (1993)1998-2004 1993-98 was my time at the Air Force Academy. it's weird, we weren't "active duty", but we had green active duty ID cards. count it if you want, I usually do. it was more "air force" than my stupid desk job after commissioning. 9. Oh my goodness, a chance to share one of my absolute all-time favorite poems! i shall let someone more lyrical than I explain: basically, probability rules all, and at any given time the cat is 50% alive AND 50% dead...except that observing the result actually *changes* the result. 10. Not a real balancing act, gliders operate under the same premise. The US is basically a powered glider. dude, you just have to be contrary to everything, don't you? You're a U2 pilot now, too? tell me, how many times have you seen them land? How about this: what is the wing loading of the U2? How about typical mission altitude? Payloads? datalinks? ground systems? Come on, prove it. *I* know the answers to all those questions. And yet you feel the need to say something, ANYTHING, to contradict someone who probably knows more about the U2 than you ever will. You're starting to sound like the neocons on here, for fuck's sake. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  11. My favorite aircraft in the inventory. My first AF job was involved with the sensor and comms systems for the U2...i could have told you this was coming 10 years ago, when they first started talking about retiring the plane. It isn't just the flexibility of the missions the U2 can perform. it's the fact that it would literally take 2 or 3 global hawks to do what one U2 can do, sensor-wise. Not to mention the way the GH is flown doesn't really lend itself to flexibility in the mission design. I loved my trips out to Beale. I even got to ride along in one of the sports cars they use to support the U2s when they land. did you know the plane only has 2 landing gear? one front, one rear. On wing rests on a skid for takeoff, until the plane picks up enough speed to lift that wing off the ground. then on landing, the pilot literally has to balance the plane on two wheels (like a bike) until the ground speed is slow enough to allow one wing to drop gently to the ground. It is an amazing aircraft. Also, did you know the U2s in production today are essentially an entirely different aircraft than the original ones developed in the 1950s. the U2 was designed by Kelly Johnson as basically an F-104 Starfighter with really long wings. it had one engine, and was much smaller than it is now. Modern U2-R/TR-1s have 2 engines and are probably about 30% larger than the original ones. The aircraft flying today aren't 60 years old, like many articles lead you to believe. the modern ones came off a production line that started in the mid 1980s. I'll be very sad when they retire them, but I predict it won't be in 2013. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  12. The lapse time it would take me to correct a problem when I am driving a manual transmission vehicle is "less than one second" to press my left foot down on the clutch pedal and hold it there until the problem is fixed or until the vehicle slows down enough to exit whatever road I am on and come safely to a stop. I swear people would be better drivers and there would be less accidents if more people drove manual transmissions. They actually require your attention while driving and there is less time to do other things while we motor around the road ways. The only real downside to manual transmissions is that you need both hands and both legs to be functioning in order to use the manual transmission. But being SC ... I sure some people will disagree with my "manual transmission" preference. amen x1000! I remember my dad forcing me to learn to drive AND take my driving test in our chevy malibu station wagon with the 4-speed manual transmission. It had a clutch like a truck, i swear. I hated him then, but was thankful every day afterward that he taught me how to drive a stick. Made me a better driver, and later, made it much easier to learn the basics of riding a motorcycle. As for the Prius...I'm guessing 2 weeks until it comes out as a hoax. Anyone for the over/under on that? Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  13. even without knowing anything about the story, i was moved. watching again after knowing what it was supposed to depict made it even better. (invasion and occupation of Ukraine during wwii) Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  14. I'm ready for it. The EU has forgotten their Machiavelli. You cannot base a "state" on so little as a single currency, and so quickly, especially with so many varying cultures and worldviews. Like it or not, what the Euro represents is a hastily-formed "economic nation" which allows no room for national or even ethnic self-interest. I'm not sure what will happen, but I long for the time when i traveled to Spain after college and everything there was the least expensive you could find in europe, yet still of the same or better quality. Amazing meals for less than the equivalent of $10, hotels for $20 a night, etc. The trouble with countries like this adopting the Euro, like the article said, is that they grew too fast. I could imagine some of the eastern european countries falling into the same pattern as Greece and Spain, for the same reasons. "States that rise quickly, just as all the other things of nature that are born and grow rapidly, cannot have roots and ramifications; the first bad weather kills them." -Niccolo Machiavelli Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!

  16. Bill, I've had luck getting "I hate beer" people into beer by giving them fruit beers, but also the strong American farm-style ales that are very heavily spiced. If you ever had Lightning's Electrostatic (or even their Old Tempest), this is what I mean. lots of clove, nutmeg, etc. It's not cider at all, but the tastes remind people of autumn or christmas and they are very smooth. more malt than hop. of course, they are BIG, warming beers with a high ABV... I'm not a huge fan of all the super-hoppy San Diego IPAs (what's with that, anyway? it's like you drink beer in san diego you have to like grapefruit juice or dish soap). The bitter american hops are just too much. However, my old civilian sponsor in college used to use european hops to make some lighter pale ales, and they were much less citrus-y and more drinkable for the average person. Anyway, good luck...can't wait to try some of your creations. Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
  17. If it's got more than 2 wheels on the ground it's a YAWN fest
  18. It's a trap!!! *sigh* Here's where i shamefully admit that John Boehner was the congressman who nominated me to the Air Force Academy. (though back then he was only a 2-term congressman from a small ohio district. Though in his defense, he took that responsibility very seriously and was very involved not just in the process, but all during the time any of his nominees were at an academy. Kept in touch, held banquets over the holidays, stood up for us if we got in hot water undeservedly, etc. Too bad he's turned into such a fuckin' nut. 23. err, not to be a nit (ok, maybe to be a nit)... Anarchy is the lack of *government*. Communism and capitalism (in their pure forms) are *economic* systems. I'm not saying they aren't intertwined, but theoretically it would be possible to have an anarchic, capitalistic society. This is a common mistake I see. Why not both, eh? 24. stay safe! Not sure about up there, but down here, it's definitely the worst today. windier and more rain happening right now than any other time this week. I hope my power stays on. Lost power for about 2 hours on Tuesday. I'm not in any danger of slides, but the roads into and out of Ramona could be bad...haven't checked today.
