  1. Shouldn't iCloud make all of this unnecessary? The way I understand this is that once you have data on one device it automatically downloads to all others. Is this not happening and have you contacted Apple about it? OK - I re-read your post. Youre going from Android to iPad and that's a little different.   7. I spoke with a BOD member about this very subject over the weekend. It was discussed and most seem to be in favor of supporting a rule change to allow these apps. From what I gather from folks who attended the meeting, the issue didn’t gain any traction because 1- there was no formal proposal before the board, and 2- they were busy with other shit. I’m currently in the process of drafting a formal proposal for the summer board meeting. There’s no reason not to use the electronic logbooks.   9. Well let's not overlook the fact that not only are there a bunch of folks coming back to jumping after the winter break, but there are also packers, riggers, and equipment coming back as well. I think that we do well to discuss skydiving and canopy issues but not so much the other parts. A newer packer that's not used to a high volume of work and the pressure to make loads can be prone to shortcuts and mistakes. Plenty of brake fires and line overs have been caused from this. Personally, and I’m sure that I’m not the only one, I have never seen a spring loaded PC and would have no clue as to what issues could result from their use. Learning has occurred. The hypothetical that I’d like to discuss some is how coaches are trained for this event. We’re taught to turn, track and dump at pull time. But this is largely to get the attention of a jumper that may have lost altitude awareness. In this case the jumper was well aware that it was pull time. The coach deploying his own parachute would do nothing to correct the issue. So the question I pose is this; do we honestly expect a coach to bail out when his student is obviously having a problem? Would you? ETA - I'm not saying that coaches should chase students down. They arent trained for it and its not safe. But should we look at the EP's that are currently in place for this? At pull time the student can’t find his PC handle. After several tries the student grabs his reserve handle. The ‘coach’ dumps him out using the reserve side JM, BOC deployment handle. So here’s my question; let’s imagine that this is an actual coach, and not an AFFI. Who thinks that this would have been an appropriate response for a coach in this type of situation? Why or why not? And yes, I already know that a coach is not supposed to pull for a student. Let's discuss the proper role of coaches here, and the potential for making some much needed changes to the rating. So who’s up for a little academic discussion?
  19. Is this a recent development? As much as I appreciate the 'tip of the hst' I also take offense. Dont try and drum up military business once you find that your sales are dropping off.   20. And one more that none of us like to admit – old age. There does come a point, as with most activities in life (i.e. driving a car), that it’s just not safe anymore. Fortunately, most realize this before it’s a significant safety issue and voluntarily sit down. But just like the grandma that doesn’t want to give up the keys to the Oldsmobile, some have to be told this. The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
  21. I respectfully disagree. There are plenty of examples of paraplegics, amputees, cancer patients, etc. that skydive. Don’t take my word for it, check out the Skydivers With Disabilities forum. There are several conditions that will prevent someone from enjoyment of our pastime. IMO the most significant one is the ability to think spatially. If you cannot process information on several levels simultaneously, you will eventually run out of luck and experience. There are some basic lifesaving maneuvers that must be performed at high speed, regardless of whatever else may be occurring at that moment. If you can’t do it you will die. No exceptions. ETA - I don't mean to sound morbid. But these are facts as I see them. I truly believe that everyone can be involved in this sport and come to love it as I have.   23. +1. This is why I got into teaching to begin with. Although I completely understand being busy, it still drives me nuts when instructors don’t have time for students. WTF are you there for if not students? Every student deserves the time and attention of the instructor staff. Not just the ones with the low cut tops. It amazes and pisses me off when there are 5 guys all over the cute new AFF student but there are 3 others wandering around lost. To the OP – weather days are extremely useful but significantly under used. For some reason, students don’t want to come to the DZ when it’s raining, windy, or cloudy. This is a great time for packing classes, canopy flight discussions, gear selection discussions, and whatever else you can think of. And the bonus is that you can start drinking beer at 10 am without people giving you that look. The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.

  25. It took a while, but my Congressman finally responded to my inquiry. I knew there was a reason I vote for this guy. And he got me a Congress/Senate tour too Dear Mr. Delair: Thank you for contacting me regarding concerns about federal transportation funding and surface transportation. I appreciate you taking the time to contact me on this important issue. Historically, Congress authorizes a new surface bill every five or six years. Surface authorization bills historically identify national transportation priorities as well as funding formulas that determine the amount of money states and programs receive. These priorities have ranged from high-speed rail to bike trails to highway and bridge repair. The last surface transportation authorization, SAFETEA-LU expired in 2009. Since then Congress has passed over a dozen extension bills to maintain federal financing of transportation projects. The previously mentioned issues are just a portion of the issues that need to be addressed in the next surface transportation authorization. Transportation authorization bills are important for state and local governments as well as numerous small businesses, such as construction companies, engineering firms, and the companies that manufacture the supplies and equipment used to build transportation infrastructure. These businesses, as well as state and local governments, require a long-term and fully funded bill to allow them to plan out equipment purchases, manage their workforce, and prioritize projects. The majority of federal funds used to finance surface transportation are from the highway trust fund, which is primarily funded by the federal gas tax. Over the last few years, the amount of money brought in by the highway trust fund has shrunk over the last few years and is continuing to shrink as Americans drive less and drive more fuel efficient vehicles. In the past, general revenue from the U.S. Treasury has supplemented federal transportation funding. I continue to work with my colleagues on the Transportation Committee to determine if there are other sources of revenue that will not impede the ability of the American people or commercial goods to travel across the country. The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee is working on the introductory language for the next surface transportation authorization bill. I will continue to work on this issue and keep your thoughts in mind while this issue moves through the Committee to the Floor of the House of Representatives.
