  1. My Viso has recently locked up on 3 occasions. Once under canopy and twice in freefall. But only on one of those jumps did it give me a false reading; it read 2900 during a big way that the break off alt was 4500. People were still turning points so that was a huge clue that it was wrong. The other mals gave me an error code which was an immediate trouble sign. Now I jump with a digi and an analog. 2. We'll be doing big ways at Raeford that weekend. I don't want to be the one to post any official details but it will be BIG! There will also be a Halloween party. The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
  3. On the ramp of a C-17/CH?? But I guess it depends on aircraft availability and if the reenlisting officer is a jumper as well. The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
  4. An addition to my prevoius post; last summer I took a trip from DZ to DZ starting at Skydive Chicago during Nationals and went east. I jumped in Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, and N Carolina. I met nothing but extremly cool skydivers everywhere I went and always felt like I fit in and was welcomed. And then to be able to see some of the people and places in pubs like Parachutist makes for a feeling of community that simply can't exist in some of the bigger sports. So all I can say is that I hope to meet all of you guys soon as my skydiving travels are about to commence once again! The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
  5. I love the small town vibe of the DZ as well but there are some drawbacks. There is the matter of economics to consider. The more tandem business the DZ does, the cheaper things are for up jumpers. The more tandem students that move on to FJC, the more people available to jump with. Also, I think that any active measure to keep the sport small means actively excluding people. This leads to a very unfriendly, clicky, skygod type of environment. And don't forget that innovation and advancement come from new blood willing to question the status quo and push boundaries. That has always had an overall positive effect anywhere it happens. One last point would be that the median age of skydivers goes up every year. That means that in time we will eventually die off with no one to replace us. 6. Quite correct. I would have been shocked had he actually been convicted. But prior to the girl's denial that it was her in the video, I was convinced that he was going to jail. The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
  7. I didn't want to hijack the 'I'm in love' thread so I'm starting this one. I may be on the verge of some kind of mid-life crisis or not wanting to admit to getting older (not old). Harleys and BMWs are nice but buying the cruiser just doesn't sit right with me. I still want to be able to suck the paint off of cars when I go by! But there also comes a time to put away the toys... The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
  8. You said the 'F' word. Twice. You owe much beer. The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
  9. Not sure who you're rooting for here but it was Al Queda that has just been protected by the court. The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
  10. CNN released a poll (yeah, I know) a few days ago asking basically the same question. But the choices were between oil company unethical behavior (talk about spin) and market forces. Their results were 60% believed that unethical behavior was driving prices. It is so very sad to see how little most of us understand about the world we live in. 11. I may be driving out from NC and camping at SDC if anyone wants to ride
  12. After the excitement of buying my first rig wore off I was sitting on the DZ, crying in my beer about how much money I'd just spent. My instructor looks over and says 'hey, it gets a lot easier after the first 10k'. Promptly filed under things I needed to know yesterday But I'm surprised that none of the experienced jumpers have responded to your statement about being able to get liscensed for 1k. The avg on my DZ is around $2200. You need to know if that price includes ALL jumps until you have your A lisc (probably not) and what the additional costs are (coach jumps, failed/repeat jumps, etc). 13. The entire premise of taxing someone because they have been successful is unamerican, violates the Bill of Rights (right to the pursuit of property), and downright sickening. The reason that so many businesses have left the country is beacuse of high taxes and other costs of doing business. The reward for doing well in business is making money. Why should that ever be penalized? 'You did well, now wheres my cut" The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
  14. Being a '100 jump wonder' I realize that I already know the answer to this question. With the already huge amount of information that someone new to the sport has to digest, how in the hell are you supposed to know if the guy flying the plane is legit? I have to say that it more than bothers me to find out that this is also an area of concern in the community. I've heard stories of pilots that couldn't wait for the beer light but c'mon, this is just stupid. I'm not one for knee jerk reactions, but seriously, is there really any way to completly this sport? 15. Just wondering how many of you are superstitious. I know some have their special pack job voodoo hex, secret handshakes, mandatory farting, etc. What other weird crap is going on out there? The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
  16. The question of constitutional protection is exactly what the Supreme Court is currently debating, concerning Gitmo. No offense but anything you guys come up with here will simply be opinions until we get a ruling from the MIB The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
  17. try farecast.com it links several other sites (expedia, hotwire, ect). And what I love the most about them is that they will give you a prediction of if the price will go up or down. They will also monitor the fare and send you emails! The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
  18. I used to make the 160 RT on Sat & Sun. Now I camp out the entire weekend to avoid the drive. And that started before gas & jump tix went up. Now iffy weather will certainly keep me from ever getting on the road considering the waste of money it is to drive out and not jump. The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
  19. Please don't overlook the facts of the case here. These people were all captured outside of US borders, by military forces engaged in a declared war. None of them has any right to be tried in a US courtroom. The US government HAS NOT admitted to torturing anyone. This is an extrapolation made by many in the press. This is the old deal of if you say something enough eventually it becomes true. Admittedly, there could be an entirely seperate debate on the definition of torture, but this is exactly why torture has not been defined by the US. This is exactly the appropriate forum for this. The fact that they are still alive is a testament to the rightness of the moral compass of those that captured them. I'm not so sure that my finger wouldn't have slipped. 20. I completly agree with Mike. The GOP WANTED to run against Hilary. It would have been the largest negative voter turn out in history. There is simply no way that Obama should have the Clintons anywhere him. Having her there automatically makes his 'change' slogan hypocracy. And yes, it should be a RWG in the #2 spot. Not for any practical purposes but an attempt to appease some of the fears of those uneasy about trusting a black man to run the country. 21. Personally I think that swooping is more dangerous simply due to your proximity to the ground. But I will try learning to swoop long before I let anyone near me under canopy. Your comfort level has to be much higher for CRW to 1) trust the other person to not kill you and 2) trust that you will not get anyone else killed. This multiplies with the more people you put into a stack. At least with swooping you are completly reliant on your own skills and abilities in addition to all of the other shit that can go wrong. 22. Last summer, skydiving consumed my life. Before skydiving I had been a triathlete, racing at least twice a month in the summer. Last year I did about 4 races total. But it was cool cause I was having a blast. I was forced to take an 8 monthe break due to an Iraq deployment but now I'm back and heading to the DZ this weekend. I have promised myself that I will do more than jump this summer. I kind of feel that I'm missing a lot of other great stuff going on out there. And there are a ton of women I could be meeting too The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
  23. This happened to me twice. As a student (jump # 5 or 6) I was at 5500 but thought I was at 5000. I freaked and pulled without waving. It's funny now considering having had to go into the basement since then but all I knew was that I was supposed to start my deployment sequence at 5500 and I thought that I had missed it. The second time was during a 4 way. The group was breaking off and pulling lower than I was comfortable with and instead of speaking up I just went with it. Big mistake. We got down around 3500, (I thought we were at 3K which is lower than what I was used to) I had been used to pulling at 3500, and I went into survival mode. I did a 2 second track that went nowhere, gave 1 wave and dumped, still very much in the middle of the formation. Luckily we had enough seperation and there were no complications. 24. Sweet! I'll be there in full force then. And I certainly support the whole case of beer for the first jump on a new DZ thing. Sam Adams and Bud Light unless anyone has any issues with that. But I've found that as long as it's free it usually finds a home! The brave may not live forever, but the timid never live at all.
