oops, I mean 218 reserve, also DOM 2001

Hi, I know, I am asking this question after the fact. I am a new skydiver and just purchased used gear. I have not had a chance to take into my local dropzone yet and won't have a chance for a couple of months or so. I took it upon myself to purchase used gear without consulting with my jumpmasters. Now I am wondering if I got a good deal. Either way, I am keeping the gear, however, I am hoping to hear that I got a good deal so I can feel great about my purchase. $3500 entire rig, DOM 04/2001 Javelin Odyssey (75 jumps) Silouhette 190 (75 jumps) Precision Raven Reserve 210 (zero rides) Cypres (also DOM 04/2001 and needs 4 year maintenance and new battery) The seller also threw in: Altimaster Analog altimeter Neptune digital audio altimeter hook knives gear bag helmet bag a cover to the Neptune 2 new log books The rig was sitting in the seller's closet for a few years, that's why it only has 75 jumps for being made in 2001.

The only bug I see it that your reserve is quite bigger than your main (228 versus 190). Anybody will say, good for her. Well, there is a case where your big reserve can be a problem. This is if you find yourself with 2 parachutes out and having a biplane. I personally believe that a reserve with lines shorter than the main ones will have less tendency to lead your main in this case and therefore reducing the possibility of a downplane. If a biplane happens don't undo the reserve brakes and if the biplane is quiet, reserve behind the main, keep both parachutes and be gentle on the toggles. What's downplane?

Wow! What an interesting response! First, thank you to everybody who took the time to respond to my post. Although there seems to be disagreements, at least people care enough to try to answer my question. I decided not to go with the Spectre 170, 143 Reserve and J1, instead I just purchased: J4 Silouhette 190 Precision Raven Reserve 218 Cypress I am still confused about some people telling me (not just from this forum) not to jump my 190 in the wind, so I am going to check with a trusted jump master to get a better understanding of that. Further, I figured that I might as well go conservative, at least until I can make more accurate landings. I always land in the landing area, however, I am unable to pick a particular spot and land in it. I have a lot of learning to do, so I think by choosing a 190 I am playing it safe--at least I hope I am. Thanks again to everybody who offered advice!!!

Hi, I am a beginner, with about 55 jumps. I'm 5'2'' and 140 pounds. I am interested in purchasing a Javelin 1 with a Spectre 170, PD 143. Most of my jumps are in a student 190, however I've jumped a Spectre 170 a couple of times. I did okay. It was a bit snappier and faster, but I still landed on the grass. The first two times I did PFL and the third time I landed on my feet. It definatley felt more responsive and I can't say that I am used to it yet. However, it was suggested to me to get it because it will not take long to go from student 190 to spectre 170. Another question, is $3700 a decent deal on a Javelin 1 with about 800 jumps, DOM 1998, fully articulated chrome hardware, PD 143 & spectre 170? It has cypress. A couple of jump buddies told me I should only pay about $3000. I'm new, I don't know what to do. I don't want to get ripped off, although I don't feel that at $3700 I will get ripped off--but I don't know!!! Any feedback/suggestions are appreciated! I am editing this post, adding the following info: The Spectre 170 has 600 jumps DOM 1/01. PD 143R - no rides DOM 10/98. Cypres2 DOM 4/05 Hopefully that can help for the feedback regarding the price. Also, I have another concern with Blink's post, that putting a 170 in a J1 which he says is supposed to have 150 max size. Does anybody know if the J1 can hold up and maintain well with a used Spectre 170. I have heard of others fitting a spectre 170 in their J1 just fine...but don't know. Finally, is putting the Spectre 170 in the J1 a safety risk? Afterall, SAFETY is my top priority!!!!
