More than likely America will fall because of over-educated idiots who can spell every word in the dictionary but are too freakin' stupid to kill their own supper. This country was built by the blood, sweat, and tears of men and women who couldn't spell and thought of educated folk as elitists. You're right and then Columbus landed and as unfortunate as it was, the educated people took over. Those educated people - the ones who gave us jet engines and an electrical power grid and radio and TV and computers and telephones and radar and refrigerators and microwave ovens and sewage systems and clean water supplies and elevators and a space program and kevlar vests and kevlar helmets and lasers and cell phones and iPODs and the world wide web and internet forums and Twin Otters and laser printers and fuel injection and digital cameras and semiconductors and utrasound imaging and MRI machines and open heart surgery and painkillers and communication satellites and ... Who needs them? You forgot nuclear weapons and chemical weapons and biological weapons and pollution and stock market crashes and war and human rights abuses and greedy corporations and corupt politicians and instruments of torture..... I never claimed all educated people are evil. Are you claiming none are? My only problem with educated folk is with those educated folk who place themselves above less educated folk. Do you believe yourself superior to those of less education and/or different beliefs? Not that I agree with the practice, but it is not illegal to hang a flag upside down. Or rub dirt into it. Or burn it. Those are all protected under freedom of speech. I'm hoping the country will take advantage of this opportunity to put a close to 16 years of worthless cow dung sitting in the Oval Office. Barrack wasn't my favored, but I am not disappointed to see him win. I wish him well and the best of luck. God knows he will need it! Trust me on this... in the 21st century its a tad more important to get a good education to get the kind of high paying careers needed to succeed. It is a whole lot easier to buy your food rather than poach it. Who said anything about poaching? I have been raising a slaughtering my own beef (as well as chickens, turkeys, and fish)all my life. The end cost is much, much less. The meat is of much higher quality than what is commonly available, and I know that my beef has no steroids, antibiotics, etc. in it. Whether a high paying career is needed to be successful depends upon what your definition of success is. My father never made more than an average middle class wage, yet he raised three kids, put them all through college, and was very respected in his community. I have always considered him a very successful man. Wrong, actually. Success in the hunter-gatherer lifestyle will only be important after civilisation has collapsed. Yeah, just look at all the spelling mistakes in the constitution. Hell, half the signatories only knew how to put an 'X'. Those are the founders. They were mostly well educated men. On the other hand, those who actually did all the work were common people who, for the most part, were illiterate. Very few civilizations have ever been ruined by their lowest class citizens. Civilizations have virtually always been brought down by the mistakes and misdeeds of their leaders, their "elitists". Violent video games I can accept. Violent children I cannot. The two do not mix well. The question begs to be asked, though,...are children made violent by the video games? Or do the games just attract violent children? Maybe a bit of both? I just returned fron casting my ballot. I voted for those candidates I felt will do a good job and skipped those contests in which i didn't like any of the candidates. I also did not make a selection on a couple bond issues and other local issues. The selection of Pres. and VP are just a small fraction of the issues being decided today. Please reconsider not voting. If you don't like any of the presidential candidates, then don't vote for any of them. Of course, choosing not to vote is still making a choice. Palin on fruit flies - why does she hate science?
Belgian_Draft replied to jakee's topic in Speakers Corner
All one has to do is read this thread and see all the posts by wanna-be scientists that condemn all those who think differently and you can find the reason why it has become popular to bash science. To find out when you merely have to go back to when this condemnation started. I'm an engineer trying to engage in a civil discussion with others who share my interest and what happens? I get bashed for questioning a commonly held belief. When you treat people like that it hardly comes as a surprise that outsiders would mistrust those in the scientific world. My stand is that we know we can only observe enough matter to account for a fraction of what physics says there should be and can say, without doubt (since it is obvious), that something is causing the discrepancy. The idea of dark matter & energy fits, the numbers work out, so it is generally accepted. But since we don't know what else is out there, we can't rule out there being another explanation. Yet so many have and that bothers me. Science is supposed to keep an open mind but it seems that more and more the attitude is, "We know this for certain and the debate is closed." Once started down that path we become no different than the religious zealots. Hence my phrase, "Science: The New Religion". So just because I don't accept dark matter/energy as fact you disbelieve my education. Fine. That makes you the same as those you condemn for not accepting what you believe. It is that attitude that leads to much of the rift. Like I said in my very first post, scientists are such hypocrits. Including myself. "An answer to a very small portion of the question, and one which I was well aware of. (i.e. massively religious people are idiots) " Tread carefully there, lad. Many people who were/are much wiser and intelligent than you and I put together will ever be were/are massively religious. If they are idiots, where does that place us? As for me, I lose no sleep at night worrying about whether any particular group of people likes me or not. Actually, i don't give a fuck about your career. You asked a fucking question, i gave you a fucking answer. If you are going to fucking bitch about any fucking answer some fucker gives you, then don't ask the fucking question. If you don't know why some people don't share your point of view then who the fuck do you think can tell you? Maybe if Jakee read these he might find the answer he seeks. Since fashion is in the eye of the beholder, I will concede that to some (or even most) ignorance may be "in fashion". I can understand how someone might be proud of not having gone to college or university since there are an extraordinary number of young people coming out of these institutions who actually seem less intelligent than when they went in. Maybe these uneducated folk are proud not of their lack of education, but of their freedom from having been subjected to the very biased and unidirectional molding process that prevails on campus. Maybe they are just sick and tired of those who have been to college looking down their noses at them. In Reply To -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all seek answers to the great questions "Why am I here? Where did this all come from?" For some the simple explanation put forth by religion is sufficient and those people live their lives quite content. Others need a much more factual answer. Thus far in human history none of those has lived their life having found the final answer, and none probably ever will. Some people try to reconcile between the two, hence "intelligent creationism". Others feel that even though in their own mind religion and science are mutually exclusive they can live accepting that both exist. A small (but very vocal) minority live on the extreme edges of each, refuse to accept the other, and spend their time trying to tear the other down. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What. Are. You. Talking. About? It is an answer to your question, "No, I'm asking why some people have a particular different point of view. " So what if palin doesn't understand the significance of fruit fly research. Do you understand the significance of things she is knowledgable about yet you are uneducated about (ignorant)? Just becasue someone is proud of somethinmg they do does not mean it is fashionable. Many mass murderers are proud of their accomplishments, but I know of nobody who would call it fashionable. Get your degree, get the hell away from academia for a while, and you will start to understand things that are confusing to you now. Science is about furthering our knowledge base. Once we accept things for what they seem to be we stop learning. To just accept the idea of dark matter without occasionally questioning the theories that point to it is irresponsible. I do not discount it as being fantasy and, in fact, agree that it most likely does exist, but I am not ready to just accept it as the only explanation for our observations. You claim you want people to accept your point of view, but your attitude is such that unless they adopt your point of view you call them ignorant. As you said, respect has to be earned. That includes the respect YOU want. You want a more direct answer to your original question? Ok, how's this... Ignorance is not fashionable and never has been. Ignorance is merely being uneducated or unknowing. In that respect we are ALL ignorant of many more things than we are knowledgable. We all seek answers to the great questions "Why am I here? Where did this all come from?" For some the simple explanation put forth by religion is sufficient and those people live their lives quite content. Others need a much more factual answer. The phenomena have been given names: dark matter and dark energy. You might have more credibilty around here if you filled out your profile. And 'round in circles we go.... Sheesh The again, maybe that mysterious "dark matter and energy" is God. That would certainly confuse the Hell out of both sides of the issue, not to mention quite a few new recipes for crow. Filling out a profile is strictly optional. I choose not to. Do you have a problem with somebody practicing their right to anonimity? Hah, how so? What have I pretended to understand here in this thread? Anyone who seriously holds the view that you put in your first post does not understand what science is. My age or the ways of the world have jack and shit to do with it. (I'm guessing... NC?) Until you leave the world of academia, you have not a clue as to how little you actually know. Until you realize how little you know, you can only pretend to have anything more than a superficial understanding. Your age and lack of real-world experience have everything to do with it. Your posts in this thread have proven the point of my first reply very well. You fail to try to understand, accept, respect, or otherwise concede that there are actually people out there that don't hold the same viewpoint as yourself. It is this arrogance and intolerance-from both sides-that causes a rift between science and religion. I will no more accept the existence of dark matter than i will the existence of God, though dark matter does hold the possibilty of not being disproven. Fine, so you were pretending to be someone who has a fundamental misunderstanding etc. etc. Same thing And yes, the religiou retards who think that science is a tool of the devil because they haven't looked for all of their answers in the book of genesis are out there too, but they are extreme. But there seems also to be this more widespread feeling that people who work in the sciences are really just mucking about (Bah, fruit flies, how silly!), and should get a haircut and a real job and start contributing to society, like Joe the Plumber or Dave the Mechanic. "Fine, so you were pretending to be someone who has a fundamental misunderstanding etc. etc. Same thing" And you, young man, are pretending to have a much fuller understanding than what you do have. You are still very young and naive to the ways of the world and as such have no stature to place judgement upon anyone. Kallend, you of all people here should know that the gravitational signature that has been observed can't be ruled out as having been caused phenomina that we are unfamiliar with. They can only be said to have been caused by dark matter if the mathematical concepts that depend upon its exitance to be accurrate are used. It's a catch-22 situation that the scientific community deserves a swift kick in the rear end for accepting much less perpetuating. "Ehm...you're going to have to find a better example. Dark matter is easily detectable. The galaxies would rotate at different angular velocities had it not been there. The hard part is finding out what it is... " Dark matter can NOT be detected. As of now it can only be hypothesized.
