Democrats introduce bill to end the death penalty
davjohns replied to regulator's topic in Speakers Corner
If you acknowledge that the juries are failable, that sounds like an argument against the death penalty. You can free a guy after 20 years - it's still shitty and his life was mostly ruined, but at least he gets something afterwards. You kill him, it's done. Clearing his name post death doesn't do anything for him. The rant about legislators being of poor intelligence is just asinine. By any measure you could suggest, they're well above average. Everything is fallible. My parachute is one. I still use it. I did recommend a measure. I would like to see them pass a budget on time. Hasn't happened in over 15 years. I would like them to pass a balanced budget. Another fail. Do you really want me to go on? If this group is above average, no wonder we have such a mess of an economy. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course. -
rcmp want to reclassify some rifles as restricted/prohibited

We don't have a Second Amendment or a Feinstein therefore I'm not sure what Canadian rights you are speaking of. For what it's worth; Our "pro-gun lobby" represents a minority. Sun Media is struggling to financially survive by achieving a national footing so unsurprisingly concentrates on emotional or inflammatory types of items to set itself apart. In some cases, attempting to overemphasize perceived discord. (IMHO) Some Canadians unfortunately allow the influence of US news, broadcasts and op/ed pieces to confuse their perception of Canadian concepts in law, parliamentary procedure, and our justice system. The right to keep and bear arms is not granted by the Second Amendment to the US Constitution. It is the birthright of every free individual. The Second Amendment just sets out in the document that created the US Government that it has definite restrictions. That is one of them. The reasons are clear. I agree there is a difference. Never seen a PM from me, have you? I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Democrats introduce bill to end the death penalty
davjohns replied to regulator's topic in Speakers Corner
I continue to put my faith in a jury of 12 ordinary citizens guided by a Judge. I continue to think the 535 legislators in D.C. are clearly incompetent at the most basic of tasks and should try to figure out the easy stuff like balancing a budget before they tackle the more difficult matters like this. Don't give me anecdotes about juries messing up. They are made of humans and subject to an infinite variety of screw ups. They are still preferable to the infinite variety of screw ups we call legislators who manage to make infinite screw ups look finite by comparison. Don't sprain your brain trying to figure that out. I'm saying juries are ordinary people who judge the individual situation based on the best facts available. Legislation is charismatic people of dubious mental facility making attempts to pre-judge lots of situations with very few facts and lots of emotion / politics. Given the choice, I'll take the jury. Yes...and a resounding No. War is a poor analogy. This man's attitudes, comments, thoughts, etc. harm himself as much (more) as anyone else. If rational people were able to just shake their heads and feel sorry for the guy for all the outstanding people he will never know, the attitude would die a natural death. Firing back in kind...causes more division. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. Sheer guesswork on my part, but I suspect there was a message in there. The maid tried to get better conditions. India arrested her husband and child. The US publicly arrested the employer / diplomat. It looks to me as if the US and India were playing a game and India pressed the 'WAR' button. It may blow up in their face. When it is made clear what the 'strip search' and 'cavity search' were, this may become a debate on the Indian caste system. Or, it could fade away. It isn't a good battle for either side. I would hope that the US had tried to work with the Indian Embassy to resolve this before the arrest. I would hope that she was asked to surrender herself first. It's not required. But as you point out, there are sensitivities involved. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. I sincerely apologize to anyone offended by my reference to Lethal Weapon. I enjoyed all of them...especially the one where Jet Lee took the Baretta 92 apart with a swipe of his hand. I practiced that one repeatedly and can still do it. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. You...you...were cheating on us with another forum??? I'm sorry it just happened I didn't plan on it it just happened. Oh wait I was drunk and didn't know what I was doing. I feel so used. I like it. One more thought... Many Americans likely get their concept of 'Diplomatic Immunity' from Hollywood. I recall a Lethal Weapon movie where everyone with an accent was blasting automatic weapons wildly and the cops were helpless due to 'Diplomatic Immunity'. Please keep in mind, Hollywood also produces movies with skydiving scenes where the ignore the laws of physics. If they ignore the more obvious laws of physics for an exciting scene, why would they be picky about complex issues of international law? Google is your friend. I ran another search. It now appears she was processed just like every other prisoner taken to that facility and India has administratively transferred her to a position that enjoys full diplomatic immunity. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Many jails have prisoners change into a distinctive outfit as part of in-processing. An officer observes to insure the prisoner is not hiding contraband. There. A strip search was conducted. If these were federal charges against a foreign national, it was likely she had to be held pending a hearing to determine bail. While that is pending...into the orange jumpsuit she goes. I don't know what the charges were, but appear to have involved falsifying a Visa application. One story I read about this situation said the Indian government has taken the husband and child of the servant into custody because she demanded better working conditions. If true, the escalation of the situation might not have started on the US side. We shall see what facts come to light after all of the speculation and mis-characterization dies away. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Discussing health insurance at a family holiday gathering sounds like a great way to take the holiday spirit, roll it over, and give it the big green weenie. You might want to save that one until you want to leave, but can't find a way to start the goodbyes. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. I don't know that I have any updated info. I saw this on CNN yesterday, ran a quick search of some key words, clicked on the first few articles, and applied skepticism and common sense. (No offense intended) She was arrested in NY. They are familiar with diplomatic immunity. It would be silly to assume they violated hers. But diplomatic immunity is very limited and complete immunity only applies to the very top diplomats. Her title included something like 'Deputy'. She's probably not immune to everything. If she was, this would have been cleared up really quickly. Common sense. Visa applications are done in hard copy with original signatures executed in front of a designated US official. Anyone with a US Passport is familiar with this. If she is suspected of Visa fraud, there is a document with her signature on it. Common sense. One of the stories I read said she is from a family of diplomats. I now know her caste. She brought a servant. I now know that person's caste. The cultural dynamics just flow from there. Common knowledge in my world. She was arrested. That means she was in-processed at a jail. Her stuff was inventoried and stored. She changed into a jail uniform in front of an officer who was watching for contraband (strip searched). Although I didn't see mention of a cavity search, she might have been asked to open her mouth and move her tongue around while an officer looked for contraband. She may even have been asked to turn, bend, and spread while naked. An officer may have observed for a string leading to contraband hidden in the prisoner's body. Thus, there may have been a 'cavity search'. "In-processed according to procedure like every other prisoner' just doesn't get people to read stories the way 'strip-searched' and 'cavity searched' do. Knowing her caste and how that caste is treated in India, I'm sure she was upset and offended. Since the arrest and search were conducted by people below her caste, she was probably more offended. So, you and I could very well have read the exact same article and come away with very different views. My experiences have taught me that what the press reports can be very true from a certain perspective, but still misleading in the extreme. I read the story from that perspective. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

There's something seriously wrong with some of the people in the US. Video of the entire incident; eye witnesses; thorough investigation; the police say the citizen acted in self defense. The family of the armed robber claims he was a saint and the citizen who defended himself should be prosecuted. Up is down. Left is right. Black is white. I'll watch patiently to see this story pop up in the news... I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. I found the last couple of lines interesting. The family of the murder victim have given up trying to get the government to do the right thing. They see it as pointless. I am seeing lots of that in Europe. They are so used to being ruled over that they don't even argue against it. The tax system is oppressive. They have few rights. Those few rights are not stable. Beurocracy is rampant and arbitrary. It's really depressing to watch. I think / fear the US is sliding that way. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

She appeared to have been involved in Visa fraud. (Her actions; documented; with signature) She did not have diplomatic immunity. (India designates which staff have that) She was handcuffed when arrested and made to change clothes at the jail. (Standard procedure) India is mad because someone of her caste is not subjected to arrest in India. They expect Americans to treat her the same. In India, someone of the maid's caste is not expected to demand better work conditions. India expects America to put the maid in her place. And you guys are upset why? I wasn't really trying to figure it out. That's just how I phrased it for effect. Abstinant with access to the internet = lots of bookmarked sites you don't want your mom to know about. It would take some time, but I think I could name 100 books I read to my kids. I know we did the Harry Potter series, Chronicles of Narnia series, Hobbit series, everything by Seuss, Christopher Moore's stuff, etc. From the time they could sit still for stories without pictures to the time my son was 17 and declared himself too old for it, I read to them most nights. Good times. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. I caught wind of this today. I think these stories rarely show up on people's radar. That's because it'll never fly. The pilot program will crash and burn. All I will say about this poll is that yes, Vader is right. It should have been set up so you could vote for all that apply. And also, yes, GoPros are awesome. Linky no worky.
