Ronin for me. Plus the Irish chick is cute, in an anorexic bug-eyed kind of way.

Does it come in a 21? I'd rather have a .45 Wait, nevermind. I'm in CA so there's no way in hell something like that would get past the dumbass DOJ anyway...

This is not something I was aware of. I'll have to look into that. Is it just the design of a container that determines which type of AAD it needs? I would guess so... Thanks for letting me know that.

I was actually thinking about going with the Shadow Racer, 1350 bucks, not too much worry about grass stains, custom fit, and still within my budget. I've still got a while before I buy anything though I will definitely keeps my mind open to other options.

If the rain stays away this weekend I should be doing my AFF level 7 on Saturday. At some point (I can see it being very soon) I think I'm going to get pretty bummed having to pay to rent equipment at the DZ, not to mention it won't be as nice as a rig tailored to me. I'm thinking about getting a Racer brand new and putting some used guts in it, probably something like a Sabre2 210 or something like that. My question, though, is this: Is there a certain container/harness that is generally considered to be a better rig for beginners? I've read a lot of people love how their racers fit and I'd like something comfortable as well as easy to use. Any particular reason I shouldn't get a Racer? Also, as long as they're the right size, can you pretty much put any canopy make in any rig? Thanks everyone.

new jumper @ 1.4333 wing loading
virulindex replied to bodypilot90's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Obviously I can't speak for anyone but myself but I'm not even done with AFF yet and I've already asked that question. I didn't ask because I was itching to get under a smaller canopy, I simply like to know what the hell I'm doing and that includes knowing everything I possibly can about these weird sheets of fabric that save my life every time I come barreling down at a hundred+ miles an hour. I think there have to be a few newbies like myself who are looking forward to SOMEDAY having a wingload in excess of .8 yet are extremely wary of the risks involved with getting ahead of ourselves. Exit weight: 210. Canopy: 260. And it's going to stay that way for quite a while. -
It ends up being a minimum of $1250 USD at Taft if you don't fail any levels. I'll have spent $1425 by the time I'm done because I already bought an Altimaster and had to replace my 1/2 inch plugs that flew out of my ears on level 3 (I actually bet they didn't fly out on freefall because my helmet covers my ears but I went up with them and they were gone when I got back on the ground)!

Well, sorry. I figured anyone participating in a sport that (basically) requires you to be 18 would be talking about their own house. That was a stupid assumption on my part. I know a number of people who live with their parents who are well over 18 so I apologize. But either way, bluebirds are dope! Appreciate them while you get to hang in such close quarters with them. Nature is a fucking trip sometimes. They'll be gone soon enough. Don't feed them to your cat. Don't get swallows (they really will kill them, by the way). And relax. I'm willing to bet it's not the worst thing going on in your life. I can think of a million things that could suck way worse. Sorry again for assuming.

So you're upset because birds moved into the birdhouse YOU put up? Wait til the eggs hatch (if there aren't any now, just wait, there will be) and the babies take off and just take the birdhouse down. You can even send the birds an eviction notice a week before you come knocking. They'll be fine. Cover your windows until then and you're covered. Eggs don't take long to hatch. Of course you could just go find some sparrows and ask them to come kill the bluebirds. They do that.

I think it would be cool to have them at the DZ in their own hangar and with their own helipad. Last weekend at Taft there was some issue and the chopper had to fly out to pick someone up and they touched down in the runway about 50 yards from the Otter and shut down jumping for probably half an hour or so. If they had their own place it might not interfere with Skydive Taft's operation. Though I'm super new so I don't know how often that even happens. It might be so infrequent it doesn't really matter all that much except that ST might lose a load for that day.

Yeah, I did level 6 this past Saturday with my first solo exit. I think I flipped over on exit but went right into a nice stable arch. It happened so fast I can't say I relly remember what happened. But you're right. The first exits were "different" to say the least.

Thanks granny! Now I'm off to use the search function to learn how to do it myself!!

It was given to me when I did my level 1 by one of my instructors at Skydive Taft. They have a copy of it online for students to look at: Level 1 There is a pdf with all the stuff from the first jump course on the same page as levels 2-7. Levels 2-7 http://www.skydivetaft.com/joomla/AFF_LEVEL_2to7.htm I don't know how to make those clicky. Each DZ might have their own spin on these but it's a good breakdown of what you are typically going to be expected to do for each level.

I've been doing a level every weekend for a month and a half or so (one weekend got rained out and another I was ill) and I'm really happy with that pace. I get at least a week between each level to reflect on what I can do better and at the same time get myself mentally geared up for the next level. I have a sort of "study guide" that goes through each dive and what I'm going to be required to do so I actually run the next jump through my head all week long and I think it's really helped me. Everyone is different but I like the way I've been doing it. Plus it's easier to cope with a big hit to my wallet if I spread it out a bit!

I would prefer the government not tell us what to do as much as it does and I agree there should be no helmet or seat belt laws for those OVER the age of 18. If you're crazy enough to not use these lifesaving devices and you get nailed, well, that's the risk you took and you shouldn't be suprised if you get banged up or worse. That being said, I ALWAYS wear a seat belt and I don't have a motorcycle.

I need to get a second job. I'm clear on the rules now. Thanks Thanatos.

I've read the beer rules before and I guess I'm just dense. Is it basically if you do something rad like your first 8 way then others will buy you a case and if you do something lame like puking in the plane/on another jumper you have to buy them a case? I feel it is my duty as a newb to be completely familiar with these rules. So thank you to all who are replying.

Who can tell me when I have to buy beer? I'm getting close to the end of AFF and I still don't know! Do I buy beer for others when I get a 'First' or do others buy beer for me? For example: Does my packer buy me beer for my first reserve ride or do I buy beer for whoever last repacked the reserve? I have never heard of a sport (maybe with the exception of futbol) where beer is such an integral part of the activity. Maybe that's why I played soccer and and now jumping out of planes...

I will have spent about 1500 USD for my AFF at Skydive Taft. But 150 of that was the Altimaster I bought...

Anybody have an opinion of the best way to go about this for your first time? I just passed my AFF level 5 yesterday but I want to get some tunnel time in the next couple of weeks. Should I plan on having someone experienced come with me to give me hand signals? Do most places have people there to do that for you? And if I buy a ten minute block should I plan on doing ten minutes straight or do a couple of sessions and sort of debrief with someone after each one? Thanks in advance!
-
After the 1500 it's gonna cost in AFF alone I'm sort of banking on that! Haven't been let down so far. Thanks!

New Zealand parachutist gets line twists shocker!
virulindex replied to cpoxon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've got 5 jumps with 2 minor line twists so far. How much do apartments rent for in NZ? I could be a God there. -
Watch more Jackass or anything Bam Margera and his idiot friends do!! And Thanks!

So I did my level 5 yesterday. I had a slow left turn going on during my level 4 but it wasn't too bad but still I wasn't quite sure what to expect yesterday being let go again and having to execute 360 degree turns. I did great, got a glowing review from my instructor, and had a blast but that's not the point of my post. With only one instructor on level 5 I had nobody outside the Otter door, only my instructor inside, so at the door there is nothing between you and the ground. Before I 'Check in!' I looked down and sort of wanted to shit my pants. In a good way (if there is such a thing). The second instructor always kind of blocks the view out of the door but since he wasn't there it was all me. And it was fan-fucking-tastic. After every jump I think 'That was rad. How can this get any better?!' and then the next level blows me away. I feel like yesterday I actually got a small taste of why all you people do this. And I'm hungry as hell now.

No I don't know you, but your responses speak for themselves. Isn't that what responses are supposed to do? Nothing gets by you does it, Captain Obvious?
