  1. Because of rain I haven't been to the dropzone since I posted this. And you don't know me enough to say that I want all responses to be "sugar coated". I don't want them tailored to my liking either, I just don't want to be talked down to when all I'm trying to do is ask a damn question. PA removed by slotperfect. 2. You may have read it correctly but to damien it must have sounded a little condescending. And it did to me too. Thanks for comin out.
  3. Is writing something like this even necessary? The fact that I'm posting on a wildly popular internet forum asking a question I don't know the answer to kind of show I am aware of the fact I don't yet really know what I am doing? And isn't it kind of obvious that ANYONE new to ANYTHING is not really going to know what they are doing until they do it a number of times AND ask questions?
  4. Have you considered a career in the psychic/telepathic area? Because you read my mind.
  5. I like to just make things up off the top of my head. With the right delivery it gets your point across and usually amuses anyone within earshot. My most successful no-swearing swearing has been "Holy whores of justice!" I'm not even kidding. People crack up when you say some retarded shit like that but you're really mad.
  6. Why do you think I posted this thread? The preface was so I didn't get the normal "Ask your instructor!" replies. Edited to add: I've only plf'd once, not twice. I stood the other three up. I don't know where you got your figures for MY landings but they're wrong.
  7. Well, supposedly even the 190 is a student rig but IIRC there is no shortage of different size student rigs at Taft. If he wants me to downsize I have no problem with that but I don't think I'll be going to the 190 right now. Thanks for the advice everyone!!
  8. Ok. I think I've got it. Is this sort of like how ducks will fly in a V because the lead bird distorts the air flow for the birds behind him and so on down the line making it easier for the following birds to fly?
  9. What type of effect does this pocket of air have on a jumper? I've not felt it in my four jumps.
  10. I'm doing level 5 this saturday so when I'm there I'll be sure to really go over this with him but I did not get the feeling he was being anything but serious. And yeah, if my exit weight is 200 even that puts me at a 1.05 lbs per sq ft and doing that calculation was what really got me wondering in the first place.
  11. Never had one but asked my AFFI about Deepseed's turnaround time and he said his took about 6 weeks. Can't give you any pros or cons having never used one but he seems to like it.
  12. Let me just preface this by saying I plan on doing whatever it is my instructor tells me but I find myself being a little nervous... I just passed my level 4 AFF this past weekend and one of my instructors and I started talking about canopy size. I've had the same two instructors on levels 1-3 but on 4 I got one new instructor. I've been jumping a 260 and am fairly comfortable with it but my new instructor says he wants to drop me down to a 190 for level 5. I weigh 180 so I figure my exit weight is no less than 200 and a 190 seems like a pretty quick and substantial downsize. I'm sure this person would not steer me wrong or have me do anything that would get me into trouble but I guess I'm just a little scared. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks.
  13. Well, that seems simple enough. And it all seems fun. Thanks Spawn!
  14. I'm youngish and new to skydiving and I've read a few people write that the younger crowd can be more attracted to freeflying than relative work. I'm still not sure though what the difference between the two is. I thought I had an idea but I'm really not sure. Does anyone know where there is a previous thread that sort of goes through the two and explains them clearly for a newb? Just tryin to learn as much as I can!! Thanks!
  15. I was looking at a new Galaxy.
  16. I'm super new (just did my level 3 AFF this past Saturday) but I figure I better start looking at getting my own equipment for when I'm done with AFF. I'm figuring on getting an Alti-2. Anyone have an opinion on this? From what I've read it seems to be a pretty popular, durable, easily used altimeter and it's not too pricey. What I really would like is some opinions on my first jumpsuit. I think someday I'd like to possible get into some freeflying so it makes sense to me to get a freefly suit right now. On the other hand, that's a LONG ways off and I think I'll probably thrash my first couple suits before I even get to FF. What should I get for my 1st suit?! Thanks everyone!
  17. I was looking for more of a list of what others have done and hadn't even thought about the actual difference in wingload. I did a search like you mentioned and now understand it a lot better than before. Thanks!!
  18. I just started my AFF a couple of weeks ago and I'm going to be doing my level 3 this weekend. I assume my instructors will probably keep me on the 260 I've been jumping until I pass level 7 but I don't know anything after that... What is the usual progression to smaller, higher performance canopies? I'm totally cool with the 260 right now, I'm not trying to rush anything, but a buddy posed the question so I thought I'd ask since I have no idea. I'm 5'10", 180 pounds. Thanks!
  19. I have thought about jumping out of a plane since I was a young kid but never got up the balls to do it until this past Christmas when my stepsister asked if I wanted to go with her to do her first jump (tandem). I started researching it and two weeks later I was doing my first jump course while she was on vacation overseas ( I still haven't told her). Anyway, bad weather had me come back to jump the next weekend and I hit the ground ass first, hard. I'm still sore but a week later (yesterday) I did my level two, got good forward movement, stuck the landing like a champ, and have already reworked my budget to put me out at the DZ every weekend from now on (weather permitting). I think I would have had fun on a tandem but I don't think I would have gotten the same sense of accomplishment as I am getting with AFF. You also don't have an instructor doing everything for you which is probably directly related to the amount of adrenalin you get pumping through you! AFF all the way.
  20. You know we didn't really talk about the landing. I got the feeling I didn't flare soon enough because it looked like my feet were almost touching before he told me to (yes, I was looking down...). BUT this was my first time so I don't really think I'm very good at judging how far from the ground I am yet. We mainly talked about what I remembered from the freefall, not so much my crash.
  21. Hey everyone, my name's Mike and I just did my level one last Saturday. Did my first jump course the weekend before that but got weathered and had to come back to jump. Everything went well until I landed on my ass. So I've been sore all week and it was the most worthwhile soreness I've ever had in my life. Level two is this coming Saturday! And levels 3-7 won't be far behind and at some point I'll have to start buying gear, hence the title of my intro. I've never done anything so amazing in my life and I plan on doing it a lot more. Hopefully I don't ask too many annoying newbie questions!!
