Is this the worst AFF ever? Whats happened here ?
Chubba replied to humanflite's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I had problems with my release dive (AFF4), but my AFFI tackled me before I could get 1 single rotation... something as simple as looking at my alti sent me into the a wild spin. AFF 5 + 6 (release, 360 turns left and right with docking) went by like a breeze, everything finally clicked. It's all about having a nice arch, but at the same time relaxing 110%... I feel loose and like jelly now and have zero stability problems... it feels literally impossible to spin now, I can send myself into a extremely fast turn, but I can pull myself out of it within 0.5 second. I dunno, AFF4 was hell, but the moment I relaxed and really FELT the air skydiving just made sense. -
Mine was AUD $2000 for 9 AFF jumps, $70 a jump now ($35 to altitude, $35 gear hire). $105 for coach jumps ($35 slot for the coach) and B-rels.

Learn the PLF like an art and PLF whenever you don't feel comfortable come in, it can be a 0.5 second decision just before you touch down. I'm 10 jumps in now and PLF on every jump... I got weak knee's and ankles and I've learnt the true value of rolling it in. Jump 8 I actually flared fully at 50ft (what was I thinking???) but came out of it, ready to jump in the next hour. This skill is very underrated IMO. I was always taught yes (obviously ignoring if you have to turn into the wind)... if you pull them too high... If it's extremely high, you can let them up and surge IMO, but if it's relatively low, just keep them down and PLF... that's been my experience.

Very very nice white wings container... always the best looking. Just curious, how would one go about PLFing on such a nice container? Can you clean them or would it be doomed to eventually turning into a brown/green mess?

Whats the differance between God and a Tandem Instructor...
Chubba replied to Rover's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I live on a nice coastal beach where tandems land, the only dropzone near me is 110% tandems, no students or fun jumpers allowed under ANY circumstances. $400, you get your video and t-shirt, then you bugger off never to be seen again. They land in front of my unit, 50 tandems a weekend, every weekend. I don't judge people, but this dropzone seems pretty spot on with his assumptions (not that there's anything wrong with that). Then again I've seen TI instruction for a few jumps, then a great AFF student... So I'm guessing there's one and the other... -
Definitely not, I want to keep jumping so I'll keep flying those massive canopies and PLFing. Yeah I love the wind, I did my first solo's yesterday, finally got to look straight down (instead of at the instructor(s)) and cop the entire freefall in the face...

I got really bunged up ankles and knee's from various sports before skydiving, they have been broken/fractured/torn multiple times, surgery+surgery+surgery. I'm right with everything in skydiving till the last few feet where I have to flare/land. I got no shame in PLFing even on the most perfect landings., I don't even attempt to stand up at all now.. I told my CI/DZO that from now on I'm just going to roll it in 100% of the time, at least for a VERY LONG time. I cop a bit of shit about it, so that's my hang up.

I've passed 7 out of 9 so far, 7 jumps no fails. Bar my AFF4 (release dive) where I caught the door with my rig, span multiple times throughout the diveflow and dislocated my shoulder on deployment... skydiving has been smooth as butter. My AFFI even passed that AFF4

Did my first solo exit today I think my door anxiety is gone. The door opened, spot was picked within 5 seconds and the go order was given... absolutely spaz dive exit (Cessna 182), at least I got to see the plane while tumbling like a madman. Awesome jump, went through my first cloud 3 AFF1's today, plenty of beer had by all.
-
I got my AFF 7 in roughly 2 hours, first solo exit for me, I got the worst door anxiety of anyone... nearly don't even want to go to the dropzone it's that bad. Don't even get me started on hop n pops, I'll probably end up deploying either on my back or at like 1000ft.

AFF #1--whoo hoo I did it!!
Chubba replied to maestrabella67's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yep Wait till you spin and tumble like hell on exit, you arch and in 5 seconds viola Holy hell it does... I'm 130lbs exit weight under a 270 canopy, it takes me like 10 minutes flying a conservative pattern, my thighs are black and blue after a day of jumping. /can't wait till I can pull at 2500ft and spiral down quickly What plane was it BTW? A Cessna 182? Don't worry about that, every single AFF1 I've seen that's gone through has a less then perfect (albeit stable) body position... it will "click" eventually when you relax in the later stages. -
AFF2, not understanding basic canopy patterns or wind in general... my radio failed and I flew 3km downwind out of the dropzone. In the end I was trying to get back (over roads + powerlines), I'm lucky at 300ft it dropped me into somebodies backyard nicely (stand up landing would you believe) another 200ft and I would have landed into a set of powerlines... I was "aiming" for the dropzone the entire time, I'm just lucky the dropzone was into the wind and I floated down nicely. Pure luck, if I turned a bit higher back to the dropzone when I realised the radio failed I would have approached into the road/powerlines, and I would have properly made a low 180 toggle whip and crashed.

Disadvantages or Advantages to being small??
Chubba replied to Toastie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm 110lbs for a 6 foot 2 male (I know, I'm a stick). I'm able to do my AFF stages without weights, my AFFI doesn't even wear a jumpsuit... you just need to arch like you've never arched before and get a really skinny AFFI, they are pretty well versed in adjusting fall rates. I "starfished" (as they called it) on my AFF2 and I nearly lost both instructors, they were literally hanging onto me like a piece of fabric floating away. One thing that I did find hard was the student canopies, 130lb exit weight with a 270 canopy and you're like a feather in the air, I swear I have to flare 10ft max above the ground, I get shit all speed or penetration out of the big student rigs. -
Mines finally going away, I've done AFF6. I wish I could say it will keep getting easier, but for me the move from 2 instructors to 1, floating exit to diving exit, plus the "release" dive on AFF4 was 100x worse then AFF1... so I guess you have that to look foward to :) From then on it got easier though, now I really enjoy the diving exit and got angry because my instructor wouldn't release me till we hit terminal Also, SMILE! Just make a joke of the whole situation and smile the entire ride up, on your way to the exit and the entire freefall... it definietely helps.

Welcome to DZ.com Skydiving in NZ? I hope you like the cold You will find the money, trust me... nothing like living in complete poverty all week just to afford that next AFF stage.

How do I work work out what size canopy to get?
Chubba replied to Alex92's topic in Gear and Rigging
Just hit up your AFFI's or CI, they will be able to point you in the right direction. -
If it makes you feel any better, I am a complete doofus on the ground, can't remember anything at all. Though once I'm in the air it all suddenly comes back to me AFF1 is a piece of cake, you will do fine

6 months till I buy my new rig so here's hoping that it's still kicking ass by then. My altimeter is on the way though, not a big enough purchase to really make any use of the exchange.

That looks sooo nice. I really like the look of white rigs/canopies/jumpsuits but I'm afraid they will get dirty :(

Skydiving camaraderie at the DZ?
Chubba replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Well in manifest book I'm pretty sure I've seen "A.P." written down next to my name every time I do an AFF. Bald bloke with an english accent -
There always has to be one of them

My first AFF skydive this Saturday.
Chubba replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
5 weeks is WAY too long IMO, I waited 4 weeks between AFF 3 and 4, it was hell on earth, basically like I was back to AFF1. You wouldn't believe the difference in doing 2 jumps in a day, the 2nd jump is 1000% easier... I highly suggest that if you can afford it. -

Damn you!!! I was going to do AFF7 (yay backloops/tracking) this weekend but my CI/DZO is an old bugger and is going to piss off to Toogoolawah to jump :) I'll be out there in roughly 4 weeks (I'm optimistic) when I get my A license so I can jump out of a Caravan :) My brother lives out Kilcoy, I just don't know why the hell someone would build a dropzone out in the middle of whoop whoop. j/k, but not really :) I want to check out there jumpsuit factory, maybe they can fashion me something super elite -
