I don't speak for Vigil and I don't know the facts behind this change in QC procedure, but it is my understanding the procedureral change is unrelated to any issue(s) that resulted in a cutter (or cutters) going out without blades. The two issues are unrelated. "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73

Just wondering how other riggers feel about separate FAA classifications for round parachute ratings and ram-air parachute ratings. For non-US riggers: Does your Authority have separate ratings classifications based on parachute type? Do you think they should? What!!??!! There's no option for "Send Rhys a Letter of Apology"?? And I sort of mean that, too. "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73 -
Paul, I hope you don't mind me stepping in here. Paul said earlier: That bit about "trashbag something..." and "fly that for a bit" means, contain a shitty parachute in a trashbag (or something) as a safety measure. Egress the aircraft and toss the bag. The parachute might inflate. If it does, fly the shitty parachute for a bit and then chop it. If it doesn't, chop the mess. Now you're having a typical skydive. Cheers. "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73

I don't know if this link will work (it's to a FaceBook account) but I loaded the file here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Novas-Parachute-Rigging/144904642247407?v=app_112190812172796 "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." The traditional RSL is a lanyard that is attached to one or both risers on one end and looped around the reserve ripcord on the other end. The departing main parachute then pulls the reserve pin. The MARD is a device that uses a lanyard to attach the main riser to the reserve bridle. In theory the MARD uses the departing main as a huge reserve pilot chute to extract the reserve from the container. But if the main is not cutaway or is still in the container then the MARD is designed to detach from the reserve system so as not to interfere with a ripcord activated reserve deployment. Just bought a new car so here's my .02 I went with the premium package that includes leather, sun/moon roof, roof racks, XM radio, etc. All the necessary interior gadgets and amenities excluding navigation (Garmin works fine for me) and entertainment. Here in the great northeast I find a remote starter to be invaluable. Aftermarket purchase and install is under $300 and well worth it. Wow. I'm very sad to learn this. Condolences to her friends, family and companions. I poked Robyn a little at first about her very long posts but later warmed to her style - she had abbreviated it, after all. She had a great worldview and was always optimistic, even when bad things happened. Like when she ate the step of the 182. Sorry to hear she passed. Can you provide more information on the parachutes? A 10 year old reserve that has been carefully stored is likely to be in airworthy condition. And somebody might want one or both. When were the parachutes manufactured? By whom and what model? They might be car covers or they might not be. My .02 Point 1: Give the entire parachute a good inspection, including new canopy attachment points, line group lengths equal, riser attachment points. If you're not comfortable doing this, have your rigger inspect the parachute and lines and check the trim. Point 2: 1st jump, make a high HnP. Test-fly the parachute. Check the flare and stall points, is it flying straight, how does it feel in 1/4, 1/2 and full brakes. L & R turns good? Practice a few flares. Poing 3: Your parachute was returned ready-to-go. Enjoy! "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73 -
It's a spring between the hooks, Terry, but I see the photo rendering makes it look like a bungee. What I find interesting about this, in the final analysis, is that were this rig genuine it wouldn't be airworthy anywhere, AFAIK. But being a copy, as discussed above, it's good to go in some countries. . . and may end up being sold for use! Jerry, I admit to being excited when Jeff brought me this 'mystery' rig to identify and rig. Felt like a kid at Xmas again! Interesting and informative input - thanks to all. After inspecting the container last night I suggested that it might be either a knock-off or NPL (about which I knew next-to-nothing, other than their being Canadian) removed the TSO label and affixed their own label. Either way it's no good in the US but I didn't consider that it could be airworthy and have value outside the States. I guess that makes me guilty of Americentrism. Apologies to my non-American friends! "Even in a world where perfection is unattainable, there's still a difference between excellence and mediocrity." Gary73
