Nighttime Jumpers at WEBN Labor Day Fireworks

Sorry - it was Cincinnati. I guess I was reaching out to the 400,000 people who were there. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -
Nighttime Jumpers at WEBN Labor Day Fireworks
DiverMike replied to DiverMike's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Can anybody identify/comment on the six jumpers who started off the WEBN Labor Day Fireworks on Sunday? They did a very good job on creating a pyrotechnic sky dance and then landing on a tennis court. It was nice to see such a positive demonstration of our sport. The diver who jumped the American Flag a couple of hours before the fireworks wasn't as lucky. He appeared to get caught up in a strong headwind. Watching him come down, I had no idea where he could land safely amoungst a couple hundred thousand people. He barely cleared the Fort Washington Way expressway and landed on a sidestreet. He landed without incident unless you count draping a hundred foot flag over an unsuspecting SUV. It must have been a major rush. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -

"Your" and "you're" are homophones (words that are spelled differently but sound alike). How can you hear a difference? For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Thanks for continuing this thread. I too commented on the very well hidden rule about animated avatars. I stopped commenting when I realized I was hijacking a welcome/greeting thread. I think this website and associated forums are great. I had an animated avatar for a couple months and felt guitly when I found out I was breaking a rule. I'll get over it. One of the things I like about the skydiving crowd is we are very 'rules oriented'. If we know about the rules we tend to follow them. I agree it would be nicer to have all the rules in one spot. huh? I can't think of a more applicable 'war' to gain resources. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Not sure what the color of the sky is in your corporate world, but in mine we correctly use the accusative case of 'who' rather than the dative case 'whom'. The best way to determine if you should use the dative case 'whom' is to reformulate the subjunctive clause into a question and then determine how you would answer the question. You would never ask the question, "Whom has learned english", nor would you answer it, "Me has" I can only assume one of the languages you are fluent in isn't German since they rarely get the dative/accusative case mixed up. Sorry - grammar is a compulsion of mine

I start my static in a week...

I am on AFF Category F 3500 clear and pull and I still haven't got used to the glide slope of a parachute. I still am setting up my downwind and base like I am flying a cessna 182. I need to forget almost everything I learned about pattern altitude. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -
Floating weightless underwater in Scuba Gear in the ocean. Salt water is a horrible lubricant and it is almost impossible to stay neutrally bouyant. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

The 8 hour bottle to throttle rule is not applicable to tandem instructors, even thought they need a 3rd class medical certificate. § 91.17(a) prohibits any person from acting or attempting to act as a crewmember of a civil aircraft: · Within 8 hours after the consumption of any alcoholic beverage; · While under the influence of alcohol; · While using any drug that affects the person’s faculties in any way contrary to safety; or · While having an alcohol concentration of 0.04% or greater in a blood or breath specimen. I agree - go with Don't ask Don't Tell. If you are really interested in the vagaries of what constitutes an aircraft incident Google the FAA Order 8020.11B For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

A. Incident (PTRS Code 1711/3711/5711 or 1712/3712/5712). An incident is defined as “an occurrence involving one or more aircraft in which a hazard or a potential hazard to safety is involved but not classified as an accident due to the degree of injury and/or extent of damage.” An incident could affect the safety of operations. This definition covers a broad range of events and may include the following: · Damage to an aircraft (other than an accident); · Runway incursion; · Pilot deviations (PD); and · Near midair collision (NMAC). Going back to the sky after a 2-yrs long hiatus*...
DiverMike replied to Malta_Dog's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I am on my E Category AFF jumps now. Just started up last month after a 31 year hiatus. I guess one could argue my skydiving hymen had grown back and I was a virgin jumper again. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board. -
That is 13 feet higher than Niagra Horseshoe Falls. I wonder if people ask him why he kayaked off of a perfectly good waterfall? For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Way to go out on a limb stating your abilities. "I think I probably . . " Isn't that a double subjunctive clause? I suspect you were being sarcastic, but I never pass up an opportunity to annoy a lawyer. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

In a Cessna 172 I was flying to get up to the Mile High Club. Things happened a little quickly and we only made it up to the 4500' club. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

A 3x3 Cube is so 1980's. I can solve my 5x5 in about 4 minutes. My 4x4 takes a little longer (different parity errors on a even number cube makes it harder) For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

I'm 51 and on my D1 AFF Jump, but then again I am senile. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

In hindsight, I definitely should have made the decision to turn away from the DZ much earlier. I did a lot of research about skydiving before re-entering the sport after a 30 year break. I realized most accidents and fatalities are due to low turns. I promised myself I wouldn't do any. I broke that promise on my fourth landing. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Thanks everyone for helpful advice. I realize unpowered flight in a canopy is different than flying a plane, but I haven't caught on to the landing pattern yet. I imagine it will come. To answer some questions I spoke with the instructor briefly and will discuss in further detail. I realize the best source is always the instructor at the DZ. I was high on adreneline and didn't discuss it in detail at the debriefing and probably a little embarassed at missing my landing spot by 100+ meters. I didn't follow the jumper as much as notice him when I was looking for traffic before I turned base. The other jumper didn't speak english that well. He approached the group and said 'sorry for landing out' or something similiar. He probably never saw me. Once I turned final and saw my glide slope I knew I was going to be low above the tree line that separated me from the DZ. I adjusted to the gap with the smallest trees and continued the final. About 50 feet away from the trees I knew I would at least scrape the tops, if not Wile E Coyote straight into the trunk. For the same reason I jump off a perfectly good diving board.

Had my first off field landing yesterday. I was following a skydiver downwind and he didn't turn his base leg until way out. He was a couple hundred feet in front of me and about 100 feet lower. He was 'A' licensed getting currency training and both of us were told to try to land as close to instructor as we could. I am a low number skydiver, but also have a pilots license. As a pilot, I would never cut across someone's base leg, but is it okey to do it? On final, he barely made it over the trees and into the DZ, and I had to do a 90 degree turn at 100 feet to avoid the trees land in a bean field.
