3/31/03 DEMOLITION AT MEIGS FIELD Outraged City Uses Storm-Troop Tactics to Trash Meigs Friends of Meigs to City: “For homeland security, closing Meigs is the riskiest thing possible” Chicago, IL – The City of Chicago today used surprise and shock tactics to start demolishing Meigs Field, the world-renowned airport serving downtown, ripping up runway without notice in the dark of night under police guard. “We are in shock,” said Rachel Goodstein, president of the Friends of Meigs Field. “The City of Chicago had agreed to keep Meigs Field open until 2026,” she said, citing a December 2001 agreement between Mayor Daley and Governor Ryan. “This smacks of totalitarianism,” said Goodstein. “It is nothing but an unmitigated land grab.” The demolition came without warning, when dozens of heavy earth-movers descended on Meigs shortly after it closed at 10:00 P.M. Sunday night. The Friends of Meigs only received warning via news media inquiries. When Friends of Meigs representatives tried to visit the airport to talk to officials about the situation, they were turned away from the area by armed police. “We understand that the City is trying to use ‘homeland security’ as an excuse to destroy Meigs without notice,” said Goodstein. “Of all of the possible things they could do, that’s the worst possible for public security. If there is a security issue at an airport, you work with the users to resolve it in the least disruptive manner, you don’t destroy millions of dollars of taxpayer property.” The Friends of Meigs Field have repeatedly pointed out that—not only does Meigs Field regularly handle medevac flights and air-sea rescue operations for the lakefront and downtown high rises—it also is the facility responsible for control of all air traffic over downtown Chicago. “Meigs Field is what protects us from what the Mayor fears,” said Goodstein. “If he wants better airspace security, he should encourage MORE people to use Meigs.” Meigs Field’s control tower controls all traffic within 4 ½ miles of downtown Chicago. Also, since September 11, 2001, security has been tighter at Meigs than at any other small airport in the state. ---------------------------------------------- All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you. Memorial Weekend TF Boogie!! It's Time! Can you believe it? Working with The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Illinois, we have found the perfect wish! There's a young boy whose wish is to fly. Not in an airplane. Not suspended by strings. Not being thrown up in the air. But to really fly. To be able to flap his arms and fly. (Anyone ever been in the wind tunnel?) This is our target Wish. We're raising the funds to make this wish come true. We're already living this dream. Let's make his wish come true!! The boogie is on!! This is going to be a good one!! (This thing is growing, too!! Bigger than I ever imagined. You won't want to miss it) Planned events: Charity Raffle: We've already raised over $2000 worth of items to raffle off. Prizes are coming from manufacturers like Sun Path, Relative Work Shop, Altimaster, Performance Design, Mirage, BoneHead, and Zute Suit, and a list of others. And we're just getting started raising items!!! Check out the sponsors who've sent us items (this listing will be updated as I receive the logo's from the companies). Charity Auction: We have Auction items. We have two containers (one for a small person, one for a large), and two canopies (Sabre 170 and Sabre 150). Everything is in excellent shape. We also have a year's web hosting. Want your own web page? Now's your chance to get the hosting dirt cheap. Another item is the actual web page design. Buy it here and save big bucks. Cook Out: We have the approval!! The cook out is on. Saturday night, on the dock. Bring an empty stomach and a big appetite. All proceeds raised this weekend will go to The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Illinois. We're gonna make some kid's wish come true. Raffle Tickets will be $5.00 each, or a block of 5 for $20.00. The auction will have a $10.00 entry fee, and will be a silent auction. The cook out will also be $10.00 a head. $5.00 for kids under 8. Team Funnel Big Way. Reports have it that multiple Otters will be there this weekend. We're going to make use of their presence to set a TF Record. We're talking multiple plane shot here. If you're a TF member and are interested, or if you are interested and willing to become a member, contact TequilaBill@TeamFunnel.com Show up and support the cause. Show some pride and have some fun. Keep checking this page. Heck, bookmark the dang thing. I'll be posting more info about the weekend and about the prizes/sponsors as I get them. If you're a TF member, or if you just want to help, contact any and all skydiving (and other) businesses you can think of and see if they're interested in being partial sponsors for this event. The more the merrier. And it's for a good cause! To purchase tickets contact TequilaBill@TeamFunnel.com or talk to a TF member. (TF Members, contact me to get tickets to sell). Let's make this an event worth repeating . . .

Fellow skydivers, Team Funnel is a loose organization of skydivers dedicated to the belief that no one should have to jump alone. We specialize in jumping with low-timers -- an informal mentoring program with an emphasis on safety -- but go out of our way to make visitors feel at home as well. With an international membership spanning continents, whether visiting another drop zone or jumping at the DZ we call home, it is our mission to spread the joy and camaraderie that is skydiving. In the Fall of 2001, we lost three members to tragic accidents. In honor of these members, and in honor of all passed skydivers, Team Funnel is holding the first annual Team Funnel Memorial Boogie on Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Skydive Chicago, in Ottawa, Illinois. To honor our friends, we will be raising funds to make a child's wish come true, through The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Illinois. We will also be honoring them by enjoying the sport they loved -- skydiving. We will be raising funds through three activities: First, we will raffle off a boat load of items. We have already raised over $2000 worth of skydiving related products and services. Items to be raffled come from manufacturers such as Sun Path, Relative Workshop, Mirage, Performance Design, BoneHead, Altimaster, Zute Suits, and more. And from individuals, like Riggers donating free repacks, video jumps, coach dives, and massages. Raffle tickets will be $5.00 each, or a block of 5 for $20.00. The second event will be a silent auction. We already have a couple of interesting items that will be up for bid, and will be adding more. Entry into the auction will be $10.00 Finally, we are planning a cookout on Saturday evening, on the dock by the pond. This will be $10.00 per person, with kids 8 and under getting in for $5.00. All proceeds from this event will go to The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northern Illinois. Fund raising will not be the only fun to be had. There will be load organizing all weekend by Team Funnel members and friends. Belly flying, Freeflying, Crazy flying, you name it, we're probably doing it. Lots of TF number dives (now's your chance to earn a number!). And to cap it all, a TF record attempt! With a reported 3 otters available, we should be able to make a great Big Way!!! Please show your support. Attend the event or purchase raffle tickets. You don't have to be present to win the raffle prizes. For more information about the event, or about Team Funnel, please visit our website www.TeamFunnel.com and follow the link to TF Memorial Boogie, or email TequilaBill@TeamFunnel.com. To purchase raffle tickets, contact any TF member, or again, contact TequilaBill@TeamFunnel.com. Thank you in advance, William A. Homer aka TequilaBill TF#1
