Someone said that the Perris runway is 3000 feet long, but is it 90 feet wide? I imagine the wings would be intruding on the packing and landing areas. Still, that would be the coolest jumpship ever!

I've only gotten that feeling with no rig on a redeye transpacific. The wind was no factor. -Couldn't resist. Hmmm, that would be fun, the "explosive depressurization" exit. Pressurize the cabin, have everyone take grips, then blow the door off so everyone gets sucked out. The survival rate might be low, but it would be a blast!

No fjords? Oh, I guess you are screwed then...
-
Feh, a ZX-12R or GSX1300R can get into the nines stock without having to resort to turbine engines...

Yeah, but they have the beautiful fjords and those scandinavian women to keep them warm when it is cold out. It's all relative....

I am insured through Blue Cross. I had a somewhat more comprehensive Blue Shield policy before for $100/month. I fgure that if I go even a few years without getting hurt, I'll end up way, way ahead by not getting expensive coverage. If I actually ever went to the doctor, it might be worth it, but in the last decade, I've had a couple of physicals and nothing else whatsoever. I'm sure my attitude will change as I age. For now, though, catastrophic coverage is the sensible option.

I pay $35/month for coverage that is pretty much casualty. Basically, there's a big deductible, and coinsurance up to a point. But the out-of-pocket maximum is like $3k. It's pretty much useless for minor stuff and office visits. But if I end up really messed up or get gravely ill, I'm covered. It is, in my view, much better than spending $3600 a year, every year. I'm sure it makes sense for some, but not for me. I think not having some sort of catastrophic coverage is really risky, though.

I'm not really one of the "DZ is my life" kind of people. I like to jump one day every other week or so. Sometimes I do a few weeks in a row, but I've never jumped both days in a weekend. I have friends to see, parties to go to, and other hobbies and pursuits. And snowboarding season is coming up. But I think I'll be jumping a whole lot more as soon as I have my own gear. Paying $25 a jump to rent gear dampens my enthusiasm somewhat. I think having my own gear will double my jumping per month, at least. My guess is perhaps 15 or 20 jumps a month, instead of the 6-8 I do now. I'll probably be alternating between snow and sky weekends this winter.

I actually like the dirt landing area. It's big, it's soft, and it isn't full of guys landing on their butts all around you. I don't think I'll be venturing onto the grass for a while. I decided to jump at Perris regularly now. It really was a great day. Next time, I should be up for jumping with everyone else.

The longest I've gone since starting is a month (the gap between the first few of my AFF levels). I haven't jumped since Labor Day weekend and I'm definitely jonesing. Gonna jump this Saturday, though, so the end is in sight. I don't want to go this long without again.

With the exception of post whoring, that sounds like most of my friends.

A women has to save herself from a 200mph freefall!!!
Scoby replied to Viking's topic in The Bonfire
Nope, I actually lost by $50 to the woman who faced Ben (and lost). The lamest thing was that both Ben and her choked, getting four and three of the final questions correct respectively. I knew eight of them, and could have guessed the ninth. And they never sent me my consolation prize. Bastards! I'm thinking maybe Fear Factor now... -

Oh, that's weak! Those announcers did need to be shot, though. And the show really had no business being on Comedy Central. I sincerely hope this isn't the end of televised robot combat, though! -

Michele's show is on the ftp.skydivingmovies.com server in the uploads directory. -

Y'know, that was the only way I thought I'd ever make it onto national tv....perp walk... You can always try the best way to go on national TV...game shows! I've only been on one (Win Ben Stein's Money), but now that the year since it aired is almost up, I'm thinking about what show to go on next. I get calls from casting people all the time to go on various stuff (game shows, dating shows, reality shows, etc.). Unlike everyone else in LA, I have no desire to be famous, but the game show experience was fun. Oh, and I'm gonna build a robot for Battlebots. -
I'm in that shopping for gear mode, and I have to admit that I probably won't have a cypres immediately. I do, however, intend to get one. I've only actually done 6 jumps with cypres-equipped rigs (my student gear had FXCs and I've jumped mostly no-AAD gear since), so I'm comfortable with the idea that I need to pull or I will die. My feeling is that this is drilling altitude awareness into my head. I will likely buy a used cypres a short while after buying a rig, but I need to spread out the costs a little. I don't feel significantly less safe without a cypres.

1:1 is pretty much maximum wingloading for F111, but you won't really be exceeding that. I've been jumping a PD190 at 1:1, and it is the only F111 canopy I've tried that has halfway decent flares (and I've jumped every size PD from 300 to 190). It probably has to do with the fact that it isn't as tired as the larger rental canopies at my DZ. I've only got six ZP jumps so far, but they seem to make a huge difference in landing. I really wish I jumped at a dropzone that had better choices in rental equipment.

For pure parachute hilarity, you should have seen me under a PD300 loading it .6 to one. Anyway, on the original question, I went from 260 to 210 in one leap. It definitely was the right decision. I think those monster canopies become more of a liability than a help pretty quickly after student status. Any sort of wind and you are in danger of backing up and the student canopies are so used that they barely flare. After 30+ jumps, you should be more than ready.

2:0:0 Gonna be back in the air next week, can't wait!

Slightly on topic, how much does a tandem master make per jump? I've always wondered what percentage of that $180 gets kicked back to the TM.

Skydivers' Personalities. You ever wonder?! (POLL kinda)

Well, the 4-question and 72-question tests return ENTP, the inventor type. Interestingly enough, that's what I do. Pretty cool... I remember taking these tests in college and getting INTP, which makes sense, as I definitely used to be an introvert. Got over it, though... -
Air Adventures West Taft, CA King Air, C182 (which I've yet to jump)

Hmmm, so no ordering the special fabric? OK, I can deal with that. As long as the construction and fit are good, I think I'm willing to take a chance with $99. Which of the designs did you pick? Thanks for the update. I'm sorry to hear it didn't quite work out the way you wanted it.

I thought the point of the stiff helmet shell was to spread the force of the impact over a larger area and that the foam is what does the job of reducing the impulse. From what I understand, this is why premium motorcycle helmets are stiff shells of carbon fiber or kevlar. While I agree that skydiving helmets often seem to be more fashion than safety oriented, I don't necessarily agree that a cracked helmet shell is a sign of superior protection.
